Watch: Sonic rides a mine cart in leaked Sonic 4 footage

Sega has claimed time and again that Sonic 4 will be firmly rooted in the franchise's 16-bit roots. As if to drive that point home, they've even added a mine cart level to the downloadable episodic game. You can check out some leaked footage of it below.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is slated to hit the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii's respective download services this Summer.

You all missing the point of this game it's not made for all you graphics whores, it's made for pure gameplay like in the 8 & 16bit days, well that's if they can get it right so anyone born before 1990 can appreciate that, and anyone born after that well let's see how much of a gamer you really are.

You wouldn't see side scrolling gameplay?? Seriously WTF kind of game do you think Sonic is? I grew up with this shit, and for me Sonic 4 finally looks like a true follow-on from the previous games. Anybody saying this game is "crap"...oh yeah..so you've played it then? Get fucked.

The old games didn't have you stuck inside a cart or gimmick obstacle for more than a few seconds, you were free to run around on foot. I think based on this footage, the person playing wasn't that skilled and the gameplay itself needs massive tweaking. Each time he bumped into a wall, he could no longer move when jumping, and had to get a run up... not very good. The whole tilting level thing should be left for Loco Roco, not Sonic. Sonic Team no longer consists of the people who made the first 3 games and therein lies the problem! If they got all the guys together who made Sonic 3 and S&K, make everything the old way, essentially make a Mega Drive game but port it to consoles, that would be the only way to make this properly.

Well think, this is supposed to bring us back to the 1990's when we all played Sonic 1,2, and 3 on 8 Bit and 16 Bit Systems. Just becauseits an Xbox, wii, or PS3 doesnt mean it had to be built to its fullest potential, were basically playing a remade version of an old classic.

why everyone seems to be bashing this a lot. I think it looks fine, and if it wasn't for the horrible person playing, would also look a lot more fun.

On the side, I bet that was a fun as hell level to make!

Some of them are bashing it because they are graphics whores. others are bashing it because this is NOT original. the addition of the homing attack was okay, as long as we were still plying levels in the classic way. Green Hill Zone .... Ahhh ... But now, they introduce some weird ass new level contolled by tilting the stage, which DEFINITELY NOT original.

I don't know, Sonic games used to be about having choices of where to jump to and alternative routes leading to the same goal, but this level certainly does NOT attract me at all. I hope the other levels are better, because this just seems like Sonic gone linear.

2 Cents.
This level just looks painfull to play.
Seems hard to coordinate controlling the cart and rotating the screen.
Camera too zoomed in, can't se enough of the level to guide yourself through.

This is the first bit of footage that has actually impressed me. The graphics looked good, music was very nice, and albeit it was a bit dizzying, the gamer who was playing seemed like the real issue with getting stuck, but it seems to have captured that old school vibe. I'm not turned off by being in the cart either, Its like the level takes more than 5 minutes for fuck sake you dummies.

damn, this will be a mix of the kind of shit shown in this video and the sonic rush games. i hope i'm just wrong, but it seems like this game will suck elephant balls. well, at least they can't delete my genesis emulator + games.
sega, please don't release another piece of shit with the brand sonic on it.
