Xbox 360 avatars - Image 1

Major Nelson walks us through the Xbox 360's Avatars in this Developer Diaries video. As with all walkthroughs, this vid shows us how to go about choosing avatars. And of course, customizing them.

The whole process looks very simple. You can create your own avatar using the model avatar you've chosen, or you can just modify it by changing its facial features, clothes, and blinging them up with accessories.

What makes the Avatars a tad more interesting, perhaps, is that they do show a series of emotions and reactions. For one, if you rotate your Avatar to see your overall look, the Avatar will get dizzy if you spin him around too fast. Also, by pressing the left bumper, you can get him to laugh, be frightened, even burp.

Anyway, we're sure you'll appreciate it more if you see the video yourself, so we won't be holding you up any longer.

» Here's the difference

between improving on a good idea and straight up ripping off. Mii's are a good idea and Microsoft is improving on it with Avatars. As a 360 owner it's painfully obvious. However, they look better and will be more interactive with 3rd party games rather than just first party games or ones begining with "Wii".

Now an online store where you can purchase old school games using a point system?? Hrmm... where did Nintendo get such an idea? Oh yea... Xbox Live Marketplace. Who would have thought Nintendo would think that was a good idea and use it for their console. Not to mention using a point cards system for it.

Oh, and "Trophies" are a great idea for the PS3. They make gamers want to spend more time and explore games that would otherwise be beaten quickly. But guess who had Achievements before trophies were even considered for the big black blu-ray player? XBOX 360. Not only that, but "PSN" just got tv shows and movies in HD... again, on the 360 first. So why did we need blu-ray again?

What it comes down to is that just because Microsoft is making a great idea even better for their console it's a bad thing. You Sony and Nintendo only boys and girls would rather point that out then look at how your respective game consoles imitated the XBOX in the first place. Get over yourselves and play your games. You don't have a 360 and if you do, you don't have to use Avatars. Seems like you'll only be trapped in your own little worlds anyway. -V

It's weird. On the one hand, I can acknowledge that the 360's Avatar system is superior to the Wii's Mii system, but on the other hand, I actually prefer what the Wii has simply because its Miis don't look so feakishly mannequin-esque as the 360's Avatars.

» Nailed it!

Very good detail.

I think the 360 avatars are better then the mii's. Don't like them then go back to your gamer card, not like they forcing you with a message threating you to use them. Don't like the new expirence, go back to classic view and it would like nothing have happen.

wow amazing.

» Meh...

Fanboys will defend their system to the end, so it's pretty pointless to try and argue with them. All three companies have "copied" ideas from each other, that's just what successful businesses do. Take a good idea and make it their own.

» Not bad

These avatars look nice. I like the variety. Hoping the PS3 adapts this feature in the future.

Unlike Miis, they actually look like people.

But in the end, I don't give a s*it about avatars.

» Just an FYI

Nintendo isn't the first company to make 3D avatars. There are a half ton of chat programs, social networking sites, and even MMOs as old as Ever Quest to credit for giving us a customizable character to represent the player.

Nintendo's just the first one to apply it semi-globally to a console. Unfortunately, Nintendo's steps toward innovation are historically haphazard. Mii's are far less customizable and less integrated into the system than Xbox Avatars appear to be.

To be frank, Miis are cute but I've been very disappointed in the implementation.

Xbox Avatars appear to be better implemented seeing as how they represent you like gamerpics do and are actually visible to your friends (jab at Nintendo's broken network design). I've even read speculative articles saying Xbox Avatars could receive new customization items when you play games, or unlock them with achievements in future games. Now -that- is how you innovate.

Home? Sony isn't the first company to do that either. Seriously, why do we need a console rip-off of Second Life to show trophies we got for playing games? Who needs trophies anyway? We've got Achievements.
