Somebody took the bait, and it looks like he could win the US$ 2,000 bounty offered to whoever will be the first to crack Kinect. AlexP of the NUI Group has posted on their forums updates regarding their ongoing project at tinkering with Kinect's innards to make it compatible with a PC. They've got videos to show it off, too.

AlexP wrote of their Kinect-Windows endeavor (aka Johnny 5):

"[A]s a research project, I took a weekend challenge of getting this awesome new Xbox device to work on Windows 7.  Here are the first tests of controlling the Kinect NUI Motor and reading the built in real-time accelerometer data on a PC.
The outlook looks good for other sensors on the device (i.e. cameras and microphones)."

He also provided updates yesterday showing the Kinect NUI Camera action, with both Color and Depth cameras running at 640x480. "As you can see Kinect runs quite good on Window 7," he says.

After this, I fully expect Microsoft to launch an update of sorts that will block any Kinect units that may have been tampered with. That's just how MS rolls. But kudos to the NUI team for getting a crack this early on. We have no idea, though, if they'll be submitting this gem of a project specifically for the Kinect Open-Source challenge.

why does it have an accelerometer? It's supposed to stand in some place or do you have to wave it around?
