Valve offers Source engine to developers for 360 |
Ó
In what might be another great partnership meaning a lot of good for gamers, Valve has just announced that they will be licensing the Source engine to Xbox 360 developers. We already know that they will be releasing Half Life 2 for the Xbox 360, so this is a double whammy by Valve. So what's Source? Or rather, what's an engine? Well, in simple words, the engine is the heart of any game. So when you're playing Need For Speed, the game engine handles all other components like 3D models, physics, collisions, sound, and what-not. For more reading, you can read some of our previous articles which have dealt with this concept in more depth (here and here).
Personally, I couldn't be happier. I've played Source-based games like Half Life 2 and Counter Strike:Source, and trust me, it takes gameplay to a totally new level. One of the first things which struck me about the Source engine was the way it handled physics - you have to see it to believe it. And don't forget the almost photorealistic graphics!
The other companies selling middleware would be Unreal Engine.">Unreal Engine.">Epic Games with their Unreal Engine 3, and Gamebryo Element by Emergent. In related news, when Gamespot asked Valve about their plans for the PS3, they denied them outright saying, "We're not currently working with Sony on PS3 middleware." Though you still have to remember that Valve is working with Electronic Arts to get Half Life 2 on the PS3. Anyways, stay tuned for the latest about this development!

I personally think source, tailored to a high-end machine, will out perform Unreal 3 engine.
Graphically it can hold it's own, but as mentioned in the article it's the physics that are amazing...the beuancy(sp?) and weight physics are what I love, oblivion had none of that. Put it on a platform where they know what level they can take it to and we will be blowing apart houses piece by piece in no time....take that campers....
Sure, graphically and physics-wise it beats the Unreal 3 engine, but it lacks..."style". Really. Every single game running off the Source engine looks, well, the same.
