Left 4 Dead Crash Course - Image 1A new expansion is coming for Valve's Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360 and PC). Thing is, on the PC, it's free. On Xbox Live, it's gonna cost 560 MS Points (GB£ 4.76 / € 6.72). Curious bit, huh? Well, Valve's Chet Faliszek has come out with an explanation, and he's pointing at Microsoft.

"We own our platform, Steam," he said. "Microsoft owns their own platform. They wanted to make sure there's an economy of value there. And so we have a price for the expansion Crash Course.

Careful to not portray Microsoft as the greedy scums they're often accused of being, Faliszek clarifies:

Well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think.. they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that.

It's not like we're [Valve] is looking at this as, 'Oh my god, we need some money, we're not going to charge,' obviously, or we'd do it on the PC. So it's just the kind of way the system works right now.

Crash Course is windowed for a September release, although Faliszek reiterates that no decision has been made yet as to expansion's compatibility with L4D2.

um

so wait, microsoft is saying it would be unfair to let someone give away DLC for a second time b/c they don't let other do it? that's one of the dumbest things i've ever heard... they make the rules (and break them: the 720p/AA requirements, XBLA size limit), and yet it's now unfair to change the rules? bull*****.

same thing

Let's say if PS3 gets L4D and the DLC, would they put it for free? lol no.

Valve are notorious liars

all Burnout content is free. Its not Microsoft, whatever "losses" they make on the heavily pirated PC version of the game, they bleed the 360 fans dry. Not saying there's no piracy on 360. But for the most part that's how the PC Market works. Crysis 2, now is multiplatform...and why? The Crytek team said there were more players playing online than the numbers purchased.

And yet they continue to be Microsoft supporters. Again, as I've said 400000 times before, I am so happy to be in a Microsoft-free home. No Xbox's, no Windows PC's, no Zune's. Thank the lord in heaven.

Well, not all content.....

But I get your point. I'm wondering, do any of the free downloads have.... uh.... oh, achievements? I was pretty sure if something added achievements, it had to be a paid dlc. So I'm wondering whether this new L4D dlc might add achievements? Did the Survival pack add achievements? Really, I don't know. I don't own a 360.

They're still at it?

Valve is still supporting them? Wow. I mean they don't have to charge for their stuff. And that's true, EA didn't have to charge for most of their content on Burnout Paradise. The only thing that was charged was Big Surf Island, Toy cars, and certain car packs. I've played quiet a few games on the PS3 where the DLC was free. Mercenaries 2 and Lair were some examples. I'm not saying that Microsoft is a crap company ,but when you look at that quote that was given "well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think.. they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that." then you can see that Microsoft is being unfair to all companies. As of this point. All DLC is free to PC owners through patches. Call of Duty, Red Faction Guerilla, L4D, Mass Effect, and so on and so on.

Agreed

There is tons of free content on XBL, seems like Valve is always complaining about some sh*t and blaming someone. While not saying anything about the series its fans really care about, Half-Life and Counter-Strike. They just focus on whatever makes them the most money the fastest now. Valve used to be so cool, now they're just sellouts and whiners. WAH WAH MS SAYS WE CANT DO THIS WAH WAH PS3 IS TOO HARD TO DEV FOR WAH. Babies

by xXxZEROxXx - 2009-09-05 03:34:31

Funny, I paid $450 for my MacBook. And I don't need a gamer PC, thats why I have a game console.
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-05 15:01:39
....

They did this with the original gears as well.... Epic released the first new map for free and wanted to continue to release free content....but ms said it would not be "fair". Of course it's fair, except other companies don't want to release expansions for free....they want money. If epic and valve want to, let them.

by rollypoly - 2009-09-05 19:15:41
i do

i always try to correct my grammAr... SMS or not. i see not giving a damn as pathetic, but to each his own i guess... there is nothing wrong with being right, and everything wrong with being wrong.
by rollypoly - 2009-09-05 19:24:33
meh

i only have two problems with apple, and they are a deal breakers for me... 1. way overpriced. you pay for the apple brand. there is no way an ipod should cost as much as it does. the same can be said of other apple products but to a lesser extent. 2. way too restrictive. i'd own an iphone if they allowed more freedom for apps. i've helped more friends TRY to use an ipod w/o itunes than just about anything except console hacking... and don't even get me started on suing clone makers.
by Aces In The Palm - 2009-09-05 22:43:13
lol

i feel sorry for all the speaking multiple languages that arent up to your standards in english then. take the plum out of your mouth. the internet is all about having an opinion and gaining knowledge. as long as people can understand what is trying to said then communication was successful, regardless of spelling or grammAr mistakes. if you want literal accuracy read a friggin book!!

Actually Apple is very unrestrictive. They don't even try to stop Jailbreakers, unlike Sony which releases new security updates every week to stop homebrew.
