Usually, when a sequel is announced for a successful game, people are happy. That's not exactly the case for the upcoming Left 4 Dead 2, though, as more than 16,000 players have signed an online petition that pledges to boycott the game.

The boycotters have stated their belief that Left 4 Dead 2 "does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel" and should just be released as DLC for the original game instead. Valve's Chet Faliszek, however, says that it's too big to be DLC:

It was just like, OK, this is big enough that this isn't DLC, we're not going to be able to leak it out. It's a cohesive, single thing. It's Left 4 Dead 2. ... Our focus is always on what we're putting in the box, put as much as we can in the box. With the five campaigns, all of them out of the box, playable Versus, co-op, Survival and the new mode, there's just a ton of content in there.

Faliszek also reassured gamers that support for the original Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360, PC) will still continue. "In fact Left 4 Dead one, we still aren't done with it," he said. "We still have updates coming."

" Left 4 Dead 2 too big to be DLC, support will continue for L4D1"

I guess..... the least thing they can do is make all future DLC for L4D free.

I didn't buy L4D at $60 because after reading up on it I came to the conclusion it wasn't worth anywhere near that. I won't buy this either

Not gonna get worked up about it for that reason alone, but I have lost some respect for Valve. They deff should not be releasing a full priced sequel so soon, especially since L4D was pretty barebones to begin with. All I've seen from L4D2 is that it has the same amount of scenarios, 5, a few new weapons and new chars who don't seem nearly as interesting as the ones in the first game.

i'm calling bull*****. too big? hell no. valve sets their own limits on whats "too big." i'm perfectly fine downloading 5-10 gb if i get free dlc (or even if i pay $20-$30 for it). i'm mostly worried about the communities being split and releasing l4d2 will definitely do that.

i'm still pissed as hell, but this makes me feel better to know that valve is at least paying a little attention instead of ignoring us.

» WOW guys.....

Call of duty has new games every year, it's L4D it's a good game, quit winning and just buy it on release or wait a week or two and still buy it, cause you know your going too.

» ya...

I thought it was way too early to announce this game as well....just made me think they are milking the cash cow and trying to cash in on L4D 1's popularity...

» of their own design...

this is the industry's fault really...

before DLC people would of loved a sequel that broke the standard 2-3yr cycle.

now that they can overcharge for bits of content and raised the initial cost, people expect to get more out of their investment.

i must admit i was a bit dismayed to hear that mass effect would only get one more DLC mission (for a total of 2) before ME2.

» so to make up for it.

make it 20 on consoles, 30 on pc, its only fair.

Valve doesn't set their own limits on what size DLC can be, Microsoft does, and it's 1.5gb for expansions. I remember hearing when Rockstar released their first GTA expansion they struggled to make it under that mark.

I believe Valve that this is probably too big to be an expansion, but I don't think it should be a $60 game when it comes out. Too early to say for sure, but it just doesn't look like a ton of content to me, especially if the campaigns are the same size as the first.

Something else most people don't know about MS and size limits, is the quick-fix patches developers put out for games. MS limits those to 5mb. That's why they always download so fast, and why most games can't get a major overhaul via a patch, there's only so much you can do with 5mb.

» l4d is a joke

but still as stated before we get a cod game every year. its 60 bucks. you can easily put back a dollar a week and buy this. the online petition made my day. those 16.000 people should all be killed

COD has a history of releasing games each year. I buy COD games a year, used, down the road because I don't expect big updates and honestly, why buy them new if they are essentially updates. I buy valve games the day of release because they told me, and I believed, that they would expand and continue to expand as time goes by. Heck, I would gladly pay for those expansions.

But, this has even the most dedicated Valve fanatic scratching their heads feeling screwed.

What they really need to do is release a FREE level for L4D1, RIGHT NOW before people get really really pissed off.

You make a valid point. MS cannot support it as downloadable content. But most major companies have pulled this stunt before and I'm sure you'll agree that it'd doable. DLC for PC's who have a crapton of space and sell the new content + core mechanics on disc for the 360. No need to install, just run it off the disc. To the 360 it will look like a brand new game, to the pc it will flow seemlessly as a massive update/expansion for L4D.

Of course, I doubt it.

They already thought about this and decided that it didn't make them enough money, so year... Super.

» i sort of agree...

They would get a lot of people to be happy and buy their second game if they only released one more campaign for L4D. Id do it right as i was relasing L4D2. That would send the message...here the new game, and heres a pack to show you we are still working on the old one! Once the full sdk is out, fun will roll also. I'm already having a blast playing user made levels.
