*UPDATE* She's coming up from behind: a 70GB HDD? + 700GB?!

70GB HDD?Ah, She's an eight ball,
She's a'rollin faster than a white wall,
She's got an avalanche packed into a snowball,
She's a losin' all the links,
She's like a stonewall,
She's loaded up...

Marcy Playground lyrics aside, guess what nifty little creature of god decides to surface from the labs of Microsoft? In a recent press event of theirs, Plaid Ninja was able to get a little snapshot of the dashboard screen of one of the units. Could it be true? A 70GB HDD to expand your storage?

Here's what Plaid Ninja observed: "From what I could tell this was a standard XBox 360 with what appeared to be the normal HD casing attached to it. I don't know if the dev kits look the same as the consumer units or not. "

Well, what with their recent announcement of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, the detachable 20GB HD just won't fit all of those movies you'd want to download. An extra 70GB of space is most definitely welcome. Besides, you still have all of those games and demos to download. How could your little box handle all the weight? Heck, iPods can carry more memory! So why shouldn't your 360 do so as well?

Too bad there's no confirmation yet, so... Chalk it up to rumor, folks. Microsoft hasn't officially announced anything yet. Keep your fingers crossed, and we'll keep you posted!

UPDATE 1: A lot of you, like vietone below, have already voiced out that a 70GB wouldn't actually be the "real" memory. Storage devices would often advertise to be of a specific amount of space, but in actuality, a tiny portion of the total becomes reserved memory.

So, if we take the 70GB example, the actual size you can fit into it would be something like 67.3GB. But, if what is shown as above would be 70GB of free space, then that would mean the actual capacity would be something like 73GB. But that isn't quite possible since there are no hard disks of that size... Now, with regards to an 80GB HD, that's a different story...

Thanks for the clear up, Pranav!

Photoshopped?UPDATE 2: that picture on the left might look identical to the one on top, but look closer. C'mon: click it! Is it just us or did someone obviously Photoshop an extra "0" into the 70GB and called it 700GB?

We smell a rat! This pic has been running around like a chicken with its head cut off on the web.

Clearly, one of these pics is a fake. Which one? Well, considering that if anyone would Photoshop something, it would be to make it a bigger, better version of the real one to make people get excited.

If the first pic (the one on top) were the fake one, and the one on the left we the real one, why would the faker reduce the disk capacity from 700 to just 70? It doesn't make sense. If we were to fool other people, it would make more sense to bring the REAL 70GB to an unbelievable 700GB!

Don't be fooled folks! Someone Photoshop'ed a 700GB HDD a bit too late!

» It's More Than Welcome

I don't know about others, but my HDD has been full for a long time. It's the DEMO's that kill your space. If I want to download a new demo, I have delete an older one. Which is queer because I like saving the demos to play them again later and show friends.

70HDD is welcomed, though I'd like a 160HDD.

by Vietone - 2006-11-07 04:38
» Could be the 100GB?

100GB is actually around 95.3GB

So maybe the Xbox360 is reserving 15GB for something?

makes sense when you look at the numbers.

Unless they aren't making a 100GB and instead a 80GB Drive which would show up as 76.2GB and 6.2Gb reserved?

its a 80gig just the mate has some stuff on it i took the photo a while ago to prove that there was such a hard drive and we have had it fo about 6 months i also have more photos of this 80gig hd

Now that you mention it, you do have a valid point there, mate! Thanks for pointing it out!

» YES

I knew they'd come around.

The only proglem now is, how much is this thing gonna cost? 20gb is already $100, right?

» Microsoft please stop raping me

Ok,like all my other postys I have to start of by saying I am in no way a fanboy or biased. I own a 360 and love it and I have my PS3 reserved and paid for in full at Gamestop. With that said microsoft please stop raping me. Last year due to shortages I was forced to buy a core system. I then had to go out and buy a 20 gig (which has been full for a while now). And now your telling me I gotta go out and buy another bigger one. Microsoft how about getting it right the firsttime. And as mentioned earlier if the 20 gig is 100 bucks, how much is the bigger one gonna cost? And what about my game saves. I also gotta get a memory card to transfer my saves, add another $30, As I am not gonna constantly be switching my drives back and forth and neither should any other gamer have to. OH YEAH not to mention not all saves (Dead or alive for example) can be copied from a HD to a memory card. HAD SONY PULLED SOMETHING LIKE THIS EVERYONE WOULD BE ALL OVER THIS ARTICLE SCREAMING FOUL AND SAYING SONY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE CONSUMER. Instead everyone is singing the praise of microsoft. At least Sony included a 60 gig in their premium. again im not a fanboy just calling it like it is.

» Fake

Ok i got nothign against xbox in fact im prbabaly going to get one. But this picture is fake, and was done in photoshop. See the 20gb HDD that comes with the premium pack has about 7gb taken for the xbox360 personal needs. So if this is real then it would show up as something like 63gb not 70gb. BTW someone said something about demos taking up space, i think microsoft should do what nintendo do and just have the demos playable through the internet.

by matt54 - 2006-11-07 06:44

the 20 gig would drop in price, ide assume somwhere between 65-75 dollars woud work

by TheSh0wstopper - 2006-11-07 07:03
» I rest my case

Unbelievable. I am the complete opposite of a fanboy. In fact anyone who is soo ignorent that their only response can be "go back to the scene you crawled out of. fanboy" is counter productive to their cause. Or this one " don't blame microsoft for you being to stupid or impatient to buy what you actually need."

Please can anyone with any sense please leave a post with some real rebuttal to my statement, or even an agreement. As for me being a Fanboy, HA!!! I own a 360 and i bet a crap load more games for it that you. And I am not broke so I am not blaming microsoft for making me buy anything. These people are the reasons why this site can not progress. They rather leave ignorant post and resort to childish name calling than to actually pose a significant argument.

i would have though your post was unbiased, but an unbiased person would never bring sony into an argument for the sake of comparison, had you kept it a ms complain only you would have looked less like a fanboy.

by sakura - 2006-11-07 07:07
» .

ms can always update their dashboard to allow user hdd's and sell an empty drive caddy/converter that uses standard laptop drives.

by TheSh0wstopper - 2006-11-07 07:15
» maybe your right...

Ok maybe I should not have included Sony. I only did it for comparisons sake and to have a measuring stick. For the record It is my opinion that 360 will be the better system (in terms of games) at least until march. I do not have a crystal ball to predict the future so I can only estimate up until that time period.

» sakura...

And sakura you read my post earlier comparing the prices of the systems. Like I said I am unbiased, but you cant just look at a system by itself you have to compare it to its competition to understand its "true value". If notthen we should all just trade in our consoles and get a dreamcast because on its own merit it was an amazing system.

this also looks to me like the work of photoshop.

cos even if it was 80GB HDD with 6/7GB of system storage, the status bar would be slightly full (because 3/4GB would have to be video/demo to add up to 70GB).

+ why would they release 70GB HDD - why not round up to 100 (possibly to be just above sony's 60GB mark

by Gamertag: gopal892005 - 2006-11-07 07:45
» : (

this is what all the 360 users want - to be able to attach any external HDD to the 360 via USB, to download videos, music, demos, gamesaves + movies onto it.

imagine 500GB of storage on the XBOX 360! (not that any1 will ever get through that much)

by jayhawker09 - 2006-11-07 07:57

actaully, showstopper, no one is telling you to go out and buy anything. you dont have to buy a bigger hdd if you dont want to. if you do want one, youre going to have to spend the money. did you expect them to just give one to you?

by Boomy - 2006-11-07 09:01

some devkit are exactly like our xbox 360. I saw 3 of them last month when Ubisoft let us play Splinter Cell DB and Rainbow 6 Vegas (both E3 demo).

So don't get your hope up for nothing, it might be another devkit :(

» showstopper

no one forced you to buy anything, you wanted a 360 when they were in short supply. you did what you had to to get what you wanted. i did the same thing, i didn't preorder soon enough and ended up buying somone else's preorder of a core, and then searching stores for weeks trying to find a hdd.

while we are comparing m$ to sony, sony also left the option open for future upgrades. does anyone actually think 60gb is enough to last the ps3 til 2012? with downloadable ps1 games, HD content, save games, game content, game demos, etc... you'd have to be short sighted to think 60gb was enough. that's only about 12 hd movies...

if you don't like what it takes to be a gamer nowadays, don't game. i've considered it myself with the way the industry and the scenes are...

by Vietone - 2006-11-07 12:40
» External HDD

Sony PS3 also allows just about everything from external drives to be played back on the PS3.

Everything except the installable game data can be stored on any media, thats why the PS3 premium has the multi-card reader.

the 360 allows this as well.

The 700 GB is obviously a fake. If you look closely at the 2nd 0, it's further down than the first which means someone fiddled with it.

by CeCiL - 2006-11-07 22:37
» ...

Umm, that's stupid.

Why don't Microsoft just do what Sony's doing with the PS3 and allow USB HDD's... they're cheap and u can build it urself...

I won't pay for a larger HDD - waste of time and money... $170AU for a 20gb HDD? ... yeah... that's a great deal.

I'd rather use my 4 external 500gb HDD's on the ps3...I would LOVE to use it on the 360.. so ... WAKE UP microsoft!

» All Fake

This is al fake. It seems that there are 360's around that are used for debugging and testing that have more capacity. But Microsoft says they have no plans for releasing a bigger HDD for now.

by anon - 2006-11-08 02:19
» HD size

The article has an update that says a 73Gig doesn't exist. Which is true. But if you look at SCSI drives instead of IDE/SATA drives, you would find that they have 74Gig Drives.

Suppose it doesn't really matter either way though.

by sakura - 2006-11-08 02:25

basically i prefer the ide of getting a core and investing in a bigger hdd when one appears, rather then buy a ps3 wich comes with a hdd later to figure out i have to buy yet another hdd.

by sakura - 2006-11-08 02:27

the latest update lets you use external hard drives just like the ps3 does so theres no point in bringing that up.

Even a 7-year-old can shop such a picture.

by rolly poly - 2006-11-08 04:19
» remains to be seen

whether or not content purchased on the ps3 will b downloadable to an external usb drives remains to be seen.

since launch 360s could load music and photos from usb devices, video was added with the most recent update. however this does not allow usb devices to be used as storage for game content or saves.

i can only imagine how long it will take the ps3 to search all your drives IF it allows saving of game content to anything other than the internal HDD.

by Not a fanboy - 2006-11-08 04:23
» Uh...

Not sure. But with all of the high capacity hard drives out there, why are console HDD's so puny??? I can buy a 250GB drive for $50 at Staples.

Here is what your Xbox drive will look like after about 1 week of use:

The 70gb one hasn't been touched by Photoshop. But the 700gb is fake. Open the image with a hex editor and search for the text string "adobe". Voila, it finds it. Meaning the image was doctored. But do the same for the original 70gb one and nothing appears.
