NES on the 360 - Image 1It's not perfect, but it's something at least. Someone sent us word of Bryan Livingston's (aka Lone Coder's) XNASharpNES, a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator for the Xbox 360.

Before you get your hopes up, we'll let you know some things that might temper your enthusiasm. First off, this isn't a hack. Rather, it's a conversion of Jonathan Turner's SharpNES program that runs using XNA. Second, it's still got a lot of kinks to work out, as XNASharpNES doesn't run at full speed and has no rom loading menu.

Lastly, and perhaps least exciting for everyone here to hear, is that you'll still have to pay to get it to work:

This requires a creators club account which runs $99 a year or $49 for four months. You'll also need Visual C# Studio Express which is free.

It's probably not something you guys would want to download just yet, so we'll just link to his site. Still, you have to admire the work it took to get this far, and someone's bound to find some use for this emulator conversion. For now at least, it's still another XNA app that's got a lot of future potential.

Update:

Version 2's already out, fixing some issues with the previous version and giving it additional functions. The new version still lacks sound, but the new features listed in Lone Coder's changelog should make up for it:
  • Second controller fixed (Yea for Luigi fans!).
  • Made thumbstick work as an alternate control.
  • Battery saves are stored to disk (Be sure to exit the emu or it won't save).
  • Crude rom navigation.
  • Emu remembers which rom was last loaded and will load it up.
  • Emu runs at full speed when not being debugged
  • Minor performance improvements

» Yeah....

XNA really should have been free to hobbyists and people that just want to run code, and then $99 for people that want to develop for a commercial fee....

Oh well, at least they tried and it's not too late to make it free to run apps...

This is the biggest load of horse s.h.i.t. I have read all day. What the hell is wrong with people? $99 membership fee? For that I can go and buy a regular NES and play any game I want bug free. What has happened to our world. Can't people do things for the good of human kind anymore. An NES emulator should be free on any system. They don't even make the thing anymore. I mean come on....

» psp *****

psp can emulate all the old systems and its free

yea, but psp sucks. DS is even better than psp, and handhelds in general suck.

» DS sucks

It's the worst system I ever bought. It has not been used in months, while my psp gets used daily. I do not understand how people could like the DS. That's how bad it is. At least I could see why people like other systems I dont. But the DS sucks

» Well...

The $99 isn't for just one program, it gives you access to the devlopment studio, which can run any program made with XNA....

It's actually a good deal, as visual studios is something like $800 and you can't run that code on 360....

It's really just a control measure to make sure certain programs don't get developed....but ya, for independant programmers, it should be free forsure...

» Psp

You forget that is only if they didnt update their firmware over v2.80 or have a new system otherwise they cant do it.

» 360 for devolopment, or PC to just play emulator

I agree the price is a safety net (control), actually if you just want to have the emulator (which is not what this is just about its also to do with DEVELOPMENT) just get it on the PC which can emulate all system to (who wants to play it on a silly little PS3 screen) if you just want (would you want?) to play those old games.

» Whoops

PS3 + PSP in above post

» Whoops I did it again

I meant the PSP not the PS3 about the small screen in my post above.

» QJ Posted wrong story

Looks like they re-reported on v1 instead of the just released Version 2.

V2 still has no sound, but is full speed, has 2 player support, a basic rom browser, and random fixes.

» Portability

The reason why the retro games sell well on portables is because they can be taken just about anywhere.

These days, when I fly, I cant imagine not having my PSP and laptop with me. I play PSP games and sometimes PC games if i feel like it.

Its like asking why would you want to play tetris on a hand held. MS is screwing XNA over on the Xbox360 if they think people will spend 99 a year to run programs other people make.

XNA is not suppose to be for applications, it was created be the intent of developing indie console games with free tools. Yes you have to pay a fee to run the code on the 360, which kinda sucks when your not the person developing the games. $99 a year to turn your 360 into a mini development kit is a pretty good deal.

We are not going to see great emulation on the 360 or PS3 until the systems are hack. I mention the PS3 also because even though it can run linux it has no access to RSX GPU which is needed for all 16bit emulator and up. SNES runs on the PS3 but very poorly, because all 3D rendering is done by the CPU.

If you want a console that can run all the emulators, get an xbox 1 and softmod it. For $80 you can have an advanced media center, load xbox 1 to the hard drive (backups), play all emulators, music, and all SD video types.

I'm hoping the 360 gets hacked so I can finally put my xbox 1 to rest, but it's not a big deal.

Ya PSP is garb. I sold it two days after buying it. And the homebrew is absolutely horrible. It's like trying to play games on an original Apple 2.

psp is nothing special its everything that u have at your home, but portable. Thats it. you can downgrade the firmware from 3.03 to 1.5 to be able to use an emulator but you still need the older gta: liberty cities game to pull it off though
