Gears of War 2 by Epic Games for the Microsoft Xbox 360 has been confirmed in Italy. Or has it? That's a question we can expect to be answered within the hour.

NeoGAF has just posted what they say is a press release from Microsoft Italy confirming the highly-awaited action sequel from Epic Games.

If the Italian news is to be believed, we'll be taking care of Locust problems again using Marcus Fenix come November of 2008. However, the scene over at GDC may tell a slightly different tale.

What we saw in GDC was a short footage of "what Gears of War may look like in the latest version of Unreal Engine 3". Featured was a dense swarm of Locust troops laying waste to city ruins. What this could mean for the franchise was never stated.

**UPDATE**: Gears of War 2 has just been confirmed at GDC 2008. At the tail-end of the Microsoft keynote, Cliffy B chainsawed his way to glory, saying that Gears of War was a setup, while Gears of War 2 will be bigger and better than the first. The logo for the sequel appears, and the crowd goes nuts!

Gears of War 2 will be available in November 2008, just as the Italian press release said. An English edition of the Italian press release has also been sent out, further reiterating Gears of War 2's November release as well as a little teaser saying that the game "continues the story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad in an epic saga of survival, loss and retribution."

**UPDATE 2**: The debut trailer for Gears of War 2 is now out. Check it out below:

**UPDATE 3**: Careful recount of Epic Games' press assets also revealed this one little prize: the game company has announced that Gears of War 2 will also come with some fan love. And that love comes in the form of a Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. Now you've got two games to choose from, if you haven't made up your mind already.

» Highest Selling?

I don't think so, yes it will be a great game but I think GTA IV will be highest seller of the year no doubt. GTA games remain top selling to this day, Vice City is the best selling PS2 game of all time and LCS is the best selling PSP game to date. Now surely the first debute of a next gen GTA game on TWO consoles can top that and easily pick up Best Selling game of 2008. To back this up, it's currently the most pre-ordered game in the UK, in most shops it's even the second best because of the pre-orders for the Special Editions too and I know a lot of people are expecting this game.

» a great game

to add to the 360 library..

but i don't thinkit will be a game which will pull in more 360 buyers by the truckload... it's a game that caters to those who have already enjoyed Gear 1, Halo, COD4, and the other hardcore shooter games that the 360 is rich with... but due to the amount of those pass good games those who are interested in this genre has already bought their 360s to enjoy those... and if there are people who hasn't bought one despite of all those games i don't see how Gears 2 will be any different.

Personally anybody who hasn't been pulled into by Halo 3 and the others might not suddenly get convinced by Gears 2.

Still a great game to add to the 360 library.

the 360 will need a game of a different appeal to suddenly be able to attract those still not a 360 owner, and it needs to be a killer cause Sony has almost all genres covered for 2008 with killer games.

I'm pretty sure this can move consoles in addition to the games already out.One of the reasons Halo didn't was because the 360 is still very expensive, but by the time GeoW 2 comes out the 360 will be $250,if not less.Gears Of War 1 brought in new owners and so did Halo 3.I think GeoW 2 will do the same. Also, the 360 has plenty of non shooter exclusives NG2,Fable 2,Cry On,Banjo 3,Infinite Undiscovery,Pro ject Offset, and Tales of Vesparia, etc. If ppl would look most games on 360 aren't shooters and ms is trying to break that mold. Its the same for the ps3 the highest selling game is a FPS and CoD4(ps3) outsold uncharted.
