Todd Holmdahl talks Xbox 360 failure rates, says people love the box

Todd Holmdahl - Image 1Microsoft is still keeping it zipped on Xbox 360 failure rates. Just recently, Dean Takahashi sat down with MicrosoftÂ’s corporate vice president of Gaming and Xbox Products Group Todd Holmdahl, only to fail at attempts of squeezing out answers regarding the 360 performance issues.

Holmdahl was deadset on sugar-coating the box, as if holding the number of broken units insignificant. His response to owners reporting to have had more than a couple of problematic consoles:

WeÂ’re very proud of the box. We think the vast majority of people are having just a great experience. You look at the number of games they are buying, the number of accessories they are buying, the Live attach. They love the box. They continue to buy the box. That said, we take any customer issue very seriously. We continue to look into these things very deeply. You have seen we have made some changes to our customer service policy.

When asked about defect rates affecting the business model, he replied, "I would say we donÂ’t have a high defect rate. The vast majority of people are really excited about their product, and that we are targeting profitability for next year."

About warranty policies being changed, Holmdahl continues to avoid faulty hardware being a cause of anything. "There are no systematic issues. The vast majority of the people just love the product, have a great experience with it. When there is an issue, we get on it and address it as quickly as possible," he said.

If that's not enough, he keeps on driving the point that people love their 360.

The overriding thing is that people have the product, they love the product, it continues to sell well. The stuff we talked about with Live has been very successful. The game attach has been very successful. The accessory attach. We are absolutely committed to delivering a high quality experience. When people do have issues, the leadership team works to make sure that those issues are dealt with as pain free as possible. We go out of our way to try to ensure that happens.

That said, he refused to comment about how many defective units there were during launch or how many have been sent back for repairs. Why they're keeping supposedly small failure rate numbers in the dark, we may never know.

» man...

and i thought sony had bad skeletons in their closet...so far from reading this article, it looks like a big skeleton... sorta reminds me of a criminal ssying "i didnt kill her"...when their is clear evidence and 4 witnesses...anyway i give it 3-5 mounthes before somebody grows a pair, tells us the failure rate, and fix it.

» Failure rate has to be like 70 or 60%

No way in hell is it possible that it could be below 60% because xbox sucks

» we all love a bit of box...

» ?

Yeah that makes perfect sense.

by redcrayon - 2007-06-18 02:44
» Because

You would not get a PS3 even if they paid you, because you love sucking up M$ balls, and quite frankly you are too ignorant to see beyond the hype/mindless gameplay

» Ha HA

Wow they can't comment on the failure rate? That's all I can comment on because there is nothing wrong with the XBOX brand and I am jealous of all the games I see coming to the platform after passing over my POS3.

Blu ray is awesome and I can now look forward to at least being able to use my POS3 for something in the future long after all third party developers offically drop support for the failing platform. When I get sick of buying new $30 movies every week, I can either fold proten or go to the store when nobody's watching and play the XBOX 360 and drool and reminisce about what it was like when I used to play videogames at home on my game console.

» yeah might as well probaly true anyways

im sure 90% of ppl who got there xbox at launch had to send that ***** back.

» to be fair

Let's be fair here. The failure rate is higher than it should be. I don't know actual numbers, no one does but MS.

I'm on my 2nd xbox in 1 yr, my friend is on his 3rd. That's pretty damn unreliable. However, i agree it is VERY fun and gets alot of use.

My PS3 does seem to be better put together and engineered, but I'll wait and see how long it lasts as well.

by Me - 2007-06-18 08:20
» never

I doubt we'll ever hear a real failure rate that they don't spin in their favor. But I bet it is astonishingly high. Im on my 4th 360. Rediculous...

by Hey redcrayon, you are dumb - 2007-06-18 10:07
» look above

I am on my 1ST Xbox and it is working fine, i bought the fan to make sure it overheats (believe it or not, its not that loud when you take into consideration the awesome high-volume Dobly Digital sound of my surround sound system pumping through the room)

The games on my xbox are awesome and I wouldnt trade my 360 in for a PS3 a Wii and $300, and no its not because i love sucking Microsofts balls, its because i respect the system, i respect the makers of zed system and i love the recreational feel i get every single time i turn my xbox on.

What now?

by salo1129 - 2007-06-18 10:22
» shut up

everyone knows xbox is going down and all tht crap tht is wht is suppose to happen man they just suck bad even there operating system sucks its hell no better than ps3 and i know cause i took everything in consideration before saying this so i know wht im saying.

» xbox still workin

hmm im on my first xbx 360 and my warrnty has long finished by now....i guess its not overheated coz i keep it on my cool laminated floor......dunno about gettting an extra fan....its loud enough as it is, oh and my mate bought a ps3 turned it on giddy with joy when the back of it shot out smoke.....loads of it and u can smell burnt plastic......sick talk about badly made but its probably a one off

» I got a launch console

I have the original launch console. Still works after being knocked off my table about 50 times.

by Eviscerator - 2007-06-18 13:28
» Sony PS2

I wonder if Sony ever released their numbers on how many of their PS2 consoles had Disc Read Error problems, or how many slim PS2's overheating. That didn't stop Sony's onslaught last generation. Least MS isn't selling you laptop batteries that can catch fire though. I don't think the 360's failure rate is as high as people think, however I also do not think it is low either. Most likely above the consumer average. Is this going to stop me from liking my 360, no, just like the DRE problem with the PS2 didn't stop me from liking he PS2, even though the DRE did happen to me.

by qw - 2007-06-18 13:41
» Nope

Not nearly that, I guarantee you. I had a launch unit for over a year before I traded it for an Elite, it never had a single problem and neither has my Elite. It's not over 30%, which is still way too high, but 60% is just a really stupid thing to say.

by HAHA - 2007-06-18 14:02
» Yet again microsoft coving their ass's

Listen to this idiot, "The vast majority of the people just love the product, have a great experience with it." It's a piece of crap the xbox360, and they are just trying to advoid admiting it. They will make everyone buy another xbox in another year just to make up for it. Make microsoft more rich fan boys, so they can eat up your money on their faulty products.

by dopey - 2007-06-18 15:39
» 1.89

Maybe thats why microsoft sold so much systems.

The average XBOX consumer, survayed, are on their 1.89 Xbox 360. That means that the average people that have a 360 is on their 2nd system!!

so not every system sold,is working

by m - 2007-06-18 16:23
» ps2

The PS2's defect rate wasn't nearly as bad as the 360, I had a at PS2 for 5 yeas and a slimmy for 2 and no problems whatsoever. However, I am on my second 360.

by why? - 2007-06-18 23:48
» .

Warranty systems are not sales, nor are reparied systems. If it's $140 to fix a system, I don't think many people would spend $300-$400 for a brand new one, THINK!

by Jast3r Rogu3. - 2007-06-24 17:33
» No!

Im surprised its only 30% microsoft always makes stuff that brakes so easily and charges rip-off prices for them.

Boy am i glad i never bought a x360 really its useless anyways no good games.

by Icarusmk2 - 2007-06-27 02:48
» Not Surprised

There's an article with retailers stating that the XBOX 360 failure rates are at around 30%:

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gaming/xbox-360-failure-rate-30-says-retailers-271487.php

Considering they are just counting the number of consoles that probably just goes back to the retailer for return/replacement. I wouldn't be surprised if the number is much higher than that.

1Up had an article of a guy who is on his 12 Xbox 360, with many others stating their already on their 5-6th.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160603

This seems so much like Microsoft though, they buy out as many of the good developers out there so they can get excellent quality games (to entice people to buy their console) and then screw them over with crappy hardware.

The 1.89 number for the people with an XBOX 360 totally doesn't surprise me. Though the console has some of the best games of this generation of consoles, I just think it isn't cost efficient to buy an Xbox 360, especially with all the down times and frustrations associated with it.
