Section 8 - Image 1

TimeGate's Section 8 hasn't really been generating a lot of news lately. The last time we heard about it, there were some courtroom shenanigans involved. This update, though, is definitely much better than that last one.

Apparently, TimeGate will be letting players turn their own PCs into dedicated servers for the upcoming sci-fi FPS's Xbox 360 version via a downloadable app. When playing on a dedicated server, the game will support multiplayer matches of up to 32 players.

Note that TimeGate will also be hosting servers, so don't think they're just getting lazy and foisting all the server duties onto players. The TimeGate servers will host only up to 16-player matches, though, so dedicated servers still offer more oomph.

Section 8 is expected to launch this fall. The game will also be available on PC and PS3.

Wait TimeGate

is hosting servers? I always thought Microsoft hosted the servers since that's the reason I'm paying an annual subscription and that PSN was free cause each company had to host their own server.

The reason your paying an annual subscription is because Microsoft is the most selfish and pathetic piece of ***** to ever come into existence. They have over $50 billion (yes billion) dollars and are the only ones to charge for online access on their consoles.

Uhh

I like the idea of letting players use their PCs to host dedicated servers, however there is a big flaw. Most people have really bad internet. That's just how it is. Unless they actually pay for an actual server, I don't see this making any difference at all.

Well this could be a way for companies that host servers to get in on the console action. You can rent servers for almost any PC game, so they could do the same for this.....and people will probably pay for it (assuming the game is really good) so that they can have 32 player matches.

quite the opposite

PSN is free because they charge the developers for the bandwidth. Xbox charges the player. Plus ps3 is the only system that had allowed dedicated servers for quite a while. This is why MAG and Resistance 2 were able to have 256 player/60 player online. Xbox can do these online environments but Microsoft will not allow it.

Indeed

I thought of that as well, but the thing is, people are already paying for Live and dedicated servers aren't really cheap. Who would really want to pay twice for the ability to play the multi player portion of a game?

Developers can afford it, most people cant or don't want too.

well...

This is why the game would have to be REALLY good and have something that warrants 32 players....I doubt people would rent a server if the game is crap, or if 16 players works fine.
