"I'm not just all-muscle - I'm... *sob* ...I'm human too!"

Sure to raise the People's Eyebrow (pun definitely intended, because The Rock says so)... Movie screenwriter Chris Morgan is eying wrestler-now-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) as someone who can fill in Marcus Fenix's boots for the planned Gears of War movie.

With the script finally penned and talks of budget already in place, the next step would be to cast the movie. Coming from doing the script for Fast and the Furious 4, it looks like Vin Diesel won't get the main character's role this time around.

Normally when I write, I think about the actor I’m writing for, but this one’s been difficult. It is a vital casting choice. It’s counter-intuitive really, because it seems like you want to get a big character — a big tough guy who can play it stoic the whole time — but in my experience, dealing with macho sorts of movies and dealing with Dom [Vin Diesel's character in "Fast & Furious"] and that kind of stuff, it’s harder to play the tough guy than an emotional character who’s all over the place. [The key is to find] a really f’ing good actor to pull off being a silent tough guy and put some humanity into it.

The Rock is awesome. ThereÂ’s a genuine actor. Not only can he play the tough guy, but he can also play the nuanced, sensitive funny sad moments as well. But finding that guy is incredibly difficult.

I donÂ’t think theyÂ’re looking so much for size, but a guy you believe can throw a punch, and a guy you believe is stoic, locked in his own head, and [can] show emotion without telegraphing it. If you just play the big tough guy, it comes off as one-note and cardboard and not a believable character. So an actor has to find little things and put emotion into them that works in a more subtle way than just being stoic.

True, Dwayne Johnson is a rather good actor, considering his background (err, wait, wrestling is acting, duh!). And I'd definitely ride on to what Morgan says - it's easy to find a look-alike character, but what's more important is if they can carry the role. I mean, though he looks like Fenix much more than The Rock, Batista sure won't cut it for me.

If I had my way though, I'm thinking Vinnie Jones could do a Fenix. But that's just me - I wouldn't mind having The Rock in the movie either, really.

» bad choice

the rock is a horrible actor hes more of a "i only do kid movies" type. Doom was bad, scorpion king, walking tall, the rundown was ok but the whole comedy thing made it suck. I rather have christian bale do it.

I say go for it. He is a good actor, may not be people's favorite actor but he does have what they acting world calls talent. There's a difference between a bad movie and bad acting folks. Take a film class and learn what to watch for. Good example of a great actor in a crappy movie : Will Smith in 7 Pounds.

As with all video game movies, I'll keep my expectations very low.

» Dylan McDermott

I think Dylan McDermott looks alot like Fenix and he is a great actor. Might need to beef up a bit though.

I'm a huge Rock fan, but The Rock as Fenix..... no.... The Rock in a Gears of War movie.... yeah. What they should do is not have the same characters from the game in the movie. A whole new cast would make it better, which would not kill the image of the video game characters.... and please... pleeeeeease, no cameo appearances of Cliffy B.

» Why not Dom?

Rock should be Dom, and for the guy who said Christian Bale.....a HUGE HELL NO...he sucks.

» The thing is

Gears never had a great story scripted in general in the games. It lacked, but the gameplay is what attracted the people anyway. A typical part of FPS. And since the rock can definitely nail the action part, I see no reason why he wouldn't be a good fit. Just my opinion though.
