The 360 leaves the unnumbered Xbox behind

Xbox... how we missed you.Over at GameDaily BIZ, they've pointed out something many of us might have forgotten. Microsoft made a console before the Xbox 360, and an economic analysis shows that the unnumbered Xbox is getting no love these days.

According to Wedbush Morgan Securities (WMS), software sales for the unnumbered Xbox have gone down 57 percent as people have placed their attention on its predecessor, the 360. In fact, the expected software sales for September were higher than WMS's original expectations, picking up US$ 104 million in September compared to 89 million in August. While this is still money in the bank for Microsoft, it's sad to see the Xbox seemingly dying a slow death because of his big brother's appearance, even while the PS2 is going strong.

While a spokesperson did mention that support for the Xbox's hardware and Live functionality still exists, in addition to 3rd party game titles, Microsoft itself seems to have left it behind as they have no scheduled titles planned for production for it at all. While it's not surprising that something like that could happen, it does leave a kind of hole between the two existing generations of consoles, one that was filled up by the PlayStation 2. Do you think they should be pushing ahead this quickly for the 360, or could they be making a bad move in not giving better support for their starting console in preparation for the Wii and the PS3?

» no concern for me

once the new system comes out i lose interest in previous systems and its games. Don't care if it is backward compatible or not because i don't want to play those games anymore.

when the PS 3 come out as much as I would love to play okami I have no interest in ps2 games on the ps 3.

» Agree'd

I have to agree, surely if there is a new console out it would make sense to buy the newer version instead of the older version. The same will happen when the PS3 comes out, why buy a PS2 when you can get the PS3?

Theres also no point marketing the Xbox anymore, MS wants to focus on the 360 and boost its sales.

"While this is still money in the bank for Microsoft, it's sad to see the Xbox seemingly dying a slow death because of his big brother's appearance, even while the PS2 is going strong."

No. Really. Do you see a PS3 out anywhere yet?

Do you see PS3 games?

Then why wouldn't PS2 software still sell?!!

How stupid do you have to be to figure out the sysytem will still sell software until a new one comes out!

» Ps2 Sales

Its completely logical to abandon the Xbox. I mean, PS2 sold 100! milion pieces, MS clearly lost the war. Obviously they are focussing on winning the next generation than on trying to keep a sinking ship..

I think microsoft has moved on a bit too fast. Sony seems to take a little too long moving on though. I remember Final Fantasy 9 comming out for the playstation seemingly well after the ps2 had arrived and I couldn't quite figure out why. Any who, I think microsoft could have had a few more releases for the xbox this holiday season to drive in some bigger numbers.

» erm...

I was still buying FF9 even when PS2 came out.....

PS2's launch wasn't that satisfying and so I enjoyed my PS2 as a Playstation 1 console that I never had before.

I met with Final Fantasy series with FF7 on PC, and FF8 with Emulator until I bought PS2 for that.

PS2 became my DVD player, and PS1 game console.

That is, until other games came out.

It played Dynasty Warriors, FFX, etc etc....rest is history

» xbox troubles?

I am a diehard xbox fan,, but I am a bit worried: first of all, for the awesome power of the 360, alot of the games dont seem to be light years ahead of the original xbox. I mean c'mon, the first xbox had a 733 celeron, and 360 has a 3.2ghz maniac processor, and it just doesnt seem like the graphics show that much of a difference. That being said, 360 will be may console of choice for the next gen, I just hope the 2nd and 3rd gen games are mind blowing.

No matter what happens,, Sony nor Microsoft will 'win", each consoles has its respective fanbase and both will sell really well. Just dont forget that MS is in this battle for the long run, and they will be #1 in market share.. weather it happens with 360 or the next Xbox, MS had unlimited funds.

And when Microsoft finally dominates the market, it will be a sad day for gamers. Competition is what makes games great.

I think they look great, try comparing Morowind+>Oblivion, GTA3+>Saint's Row, PGR2+>PGR3, plus Live has been greatly improved

ya... thats true, they do look better,, but With saints row, it seems to chug alot and bad page tear issues... I think that time will make the games better.. Assasins creed and GoW make current 360 games look like last gen

» What!

For starter the XBox was dead in the water from the start. It wasn't going to beat the PS2. Second Sony supports their consoles over a long period of time to keep them entertained until they can buy the new stuff like the PS3. Sony will support the PS2 for another 2-4 years. Can't say the same for Microsoft. When the PS3 and the Wii come out people will forget about the 360 and it will be dead in the water for a while. It won't get no respect from Japan and from what I can see from the polls, the number of people who want a PS3 surpasses the 360's total sales up to this point. The 360 won't win the console wars no matter what they come up with. 360 fanboys will realize it some time down the road.

» The column writers here are retarded

"software sales for the unnumbered Xbox have gone down 57 percent as people have placed their attention on its predecessor, the 360."

I agree that most 360 fanboys fail to realize that (which is why they're fanboys; they're blind little f*ckers), but what you're not realizing is that neither the Xbox or the 360 were ever ment to win their respective "wars". Why would a megacorporation which is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and makes billions more every year care if it loses a cool billion on a videogame console? It wouldn't. The point of the 360 is to get the name out to a bigger audience, so that Microsoft can win at some point down the road, which they will.

If you honestly thought the Xbox was ever meant to beat the PS2, which came out a year before and already had a few great games, you deserve jack*ss of the year award. It's only point was to give the PS2 some much-needed competition, and to provide the people who hate Jap crap and want at least a decent online component some games to play (like me).
