Tekken 6 could affect development of next Xbox 360, says exec producer

Tekken Producer: It is a challenge to fit this game onto one DVD - Image 1

The Xbox 360 may have its issues, but that just means there's room for improvement. And according to Katsuhiro Harada, the console will benefit from the development of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, which pushes the console's power to its limits.

Harada, the game's executive producer, says that it was a challenge to make the game for the Xbox 360 at 60 fps because it was developed based on the PlayStation 3's architecture. He says:

It is a challenge to fit this game onto one DVD and to make sure the data is read at a fast rate.

It is essential to utilize the 360Â’s functions and strengths to the fullest in order to accomplish the same goal. I believe that the data and experience gained during development may affect development of the next iteration of the console.

Tekken 6Â’s graphics engine was developed for a high frame rate to create fluid motion rather than focusing purely on extravagant still shots. [...] These games show a new level of smooth and dynamic movement. This technology has proved very difficult to realise with fighting games running at 60fps.

I'll say it before any of you so we can get it over with. "So Tekken 6 is just pushing the Xbox 360 to match the already existing tech of the PlayStation 3?" Avoid this line of discussion please, we've all heard it before. How about talking about the possibilities of the Xbox 360's evolution as a console in its own right, or something along those lines.

I probably didn't phrase it well enough then. My point was that there's bound to be someone who will think that, and I wanted to avoid that line of discussion in the comments.

But judging from how you took it, it'll probably happen anyway.

Its hard to port somethimg from a ppc structure over to normal x86 architecture. Porting games this generation has really sucked.

To me this is what the 360 needs to fix in order to evolve as a console.

All good.

Hmm, mem card games instead of CDs is an appealing idea for me. The idea's been thrown around for the next PSP model.

If it can work for a handheld, I don't see why it shouldn't work for a console, especially if it has a hard drive (which should be standard in the next 360 I think).

Mem card reading is fast enough, especially if it has an install option, and as you said, it avoids the problem of scratching. I'm sure some sort of security can be put in place for anti-piracy, better than the one they have now at least.

# Piracy...papajag 2009-03-05 10:04
It will always be around no matter what they use. Look at the cart on the DS called the R4. The only way to prevent piracy is to have all the games be downloadable and only specific to one user. Even that can be hacked...maybe IDK.

Mem Card games would be great. But I don't like those things sticking out of my console. It would be faster than CDs and probably won't need installs.

The next gen 360 will have to use Blu-Ray.. it's like the jump from cartridge to CDs and then DVDs.. UNLESS!! They either develop their own thing to rival it (not HDDVD-like) or maybe if they shoot for digital distribution

But what this really means is that the xbox 360's lifespan is almost expired. What this means for the industry is that games designed for gamers will be growing more and more exclusive for PS3, while the Xbox will start going more in the wii direction of casual gaming, possibly copying the wii motion sensitivity controler.

So what you will see more of is PS3 exclusive games, with xbox and wii cross platform games. In essence, Xbox has a few years left before a generational upgrade.

I think it will almost have to have blu-ray, especially if it becomes as popular as DVD's....I don't think they would release a console that can't play the most popular media format...

If anything they will still support DVD's, so having a disc drive as well as a card reader would be odd.....but not a biggie if they are the size of a pro-duo I suppose.

Could work, mem card tech would have to drop in price drastically....games are already expensive being pressed onto a cheap DVD or relatively cheap blu-ray.....putting them on mem cards would probably double the price.

360 still has a couple of announced exclusives....like splinter cell conviction, alan wake...gears 3 (not announced, but it's a given) Mass effect 2.....they could still make a fable 3 (which is needed, as it's yet to be the game it could be) Forza 2...etc....

However, I still feel the 360 is pushing it's limits and getting stale. We are not seeing the improvements technically in 360 games that you see in PS3 games. New games on PS3 are progressing the technical acheivements on the system everytime. 360 exclusives aren't doing this. Gears 2 just added more charcter to the screen and some better lighting and water effects, but not a huge improvement. Fable 2, well it didn't push any limits, just a decent looking game. Newer exclusives like ODST and Halo wars, look very mediocre.....so 360 has plenty of exclusives, but they just aren't getting the huge improvements, which means there isn't much room on the system for growth....

# Not really 2...papajag 2009-03-05 18:10
It would have great exclusives if it wasn't hard to develop for it. If they make it easier for devs then that could change things. The only way to do that is PS4. I think that system will bring Sony back up to the top again. Of course this only depends on how MS will make their next gen.

I find it funny that none of you really disagreed with me, and that for the most part, you all missed the point.

GTA, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Resident Evil, games like these are large franchises that generate huge sales. Sure, this generation, all have been cross platform. Xbox scored a huge victory with cross platform FFXIII. But not only has namco-bandi said that they are at the xbox's limits, but other devs too *ie, square with FFXII*

The Xbox is starting hit its technological limits and ps3 is not close to its limits yet. When you look at it from a dev standpoint, it would be more cost effective to make cross platform games for wii and xbox, then try to make xbox and ps3 games. Of course microsoft has in house exclusives, but with the exception of nintendo, most big name games are not made by in house developers.

BluRay will never be as popular as DVD, soon enough everything will be downloaded. Just like Mp3/iPod killed music CDs, Netflix/Hulu/Tivo is gonna kill BluRay.

All they'd have to do is register a game to your LiveID when purchased, you can go a friend's house and access it when you sign in with your username.

# downloadable true HD content....Shatterdome 2009-03-06 23:17
is not comming anytime soon.

Sorry, I have good internet, I pay $55 a month for an "extreme" bundle wich allows 100gig a month download...at 10mbps down and 1mbps up.....only other tier above it is "nitro" which has the same bandwidth cap, just allows 20mpbp down....

So 100 gig a month, and you are getting all your media through it....lets give a liberal guess and say it's up to 400 gigs in 2 yrs (very liberal).....that is 8 movies or games you can "purchase" in one month.....seriously, you'd be happy with that ?

Downloadable games/HD movies as an alternative for phyiscal media will not be realistic until the continent is covered in fibre optics....which is at least 10 years away....

My only real response to this is simple: Power doesn't equate to profit, ease of development or lifespan. The PS3 tends to take a long time to develop for, even with all the improvements to the dev tools. Companies have to spend more and more money doing even the simple things like modeling for all of this 'power', and it isn't as profitable. Oddly, companies keep jumping ship to 360, even in japan, where the console isn't as widely distributed. Why? Because even if the game doesn't do stellar, the lower development costs and dev cycle means they still make more money. It is a business, after all.

Don't be foolish. Digital Downloading isn't going to be the top dog or better than Blu-ray. It's nice to dream, but MS is ridiculous if they think it's going to be better than Blu-ray or even DVD. There is places around the globe, similar to Shatterdome post, where there's no online at all. And some are still using f'ing dialup. How the hell is digital downloading with that connection speed is going to be super to disc mediums?

Like MS, you're dreaming of something that isn't going to catch on for another decade or 2. Unless the whole world everywhere get's Fibre Optics like Shatterdome said, Digital Downloading will not be coming soon. By the time Digital Downloading starts making better progress, Blu-ray will become the standard of Hi-def disc mediums. Hell I wouldn't be surprised in 5-10 years from now, Blu-ray becomes standard. And lets not forget, they already have 500GB blu-ray discs in development right now. That's 20 layered blu-ray discs. And by the time Digital Downloading starts making strides, there's going to be Terabytes blu-ray discs as a standard.

I mean MS has made it clear multiple times, they do not want to have Blu-ray on their machine, and clinging on Digital Downloading.
