Mad Doc lead designer Ian Currie dishes out new details on Star Trek: Legacy. With only a few bugs to fix, and some final polishing, the game is all set for its release later this year. That's one piece of good news for all you Starfleet hopefuls just dying to get your hands on this title. And there's more.

Fellow Mad Doc team member Gary Conti earlier talked about the game spanning the five series (Enterprise, The Original Series, TNG, DS9, and Voyager) with a storyline developed by a veteran Star Trek writer (later revealed as DC Fontana). Currie doesn't reveal as much, though he does mention the single-player campaign will start from Jonathan Archer, and will progress from there to Kirk, then Picard and his contemporaries. And while the player pretty much decides his fleet composition through the campaign, there is one permanent feature that will follow you through the game are the main ships of each era: the NX-01 and the Kirk and Picard Enterprises, as well as the Defiant, DS9, and Voyager (pictured at left; thanks, GameSpot for the image).

Currie confirms that the Borg, Klingons, and Romulans are present in this game's universe, but other races such as the Ferengi, the Suliban, or Species 8472 (or apparently all the other Star Trek races for that matter) weren't included. Each race has about 20 ships to deploy, except for the Federation which would have more because of the single-player campaign.

Skirmish and multiplayer modes will have multiple customization options, allowing the player to select era, race, AI, fleet size, and command points, and many other settings common to multiplayer and skirmish setups. There will be no automatic checkpoint saves, but the player can save his game at any time. And finally, as they're developing Legacy with both the PC and the Xbox 360 in mind, Currie says that there will be very little difference between the two versions (aside from the controls, of course).
