Ó

Ever the forward thinkers, Square Enix is apparently already starting development on an engine for next generation consoles.

se-recruit

The image above is what you\ll see if you visit the "Recruit" page at Square Enix Japan's website And yes, that's that spiky haired guy with the giant sword from that one game. According to translations from Andriasang, here's what Square Enix has to say:

At Square Enix, in anticipation of the appearance of next generation platforms, we've started development on a new generation game engine for competing beyond the level of the strong developers throughout the world, and are presently seeking a lot of talent.

The company is currently recruiting a variety of programmers with PS3 and Xbox 360 backgrounds as well as programmers with experience in large scale client programming of the type seen in MMOs.

"...large scale client programming".... Hopefully that's a sign for world view :D

It has nothing to do with the World Map View seen in previous FF games. It means larger systems of objects for instance and the systems that moderate and control those systems in regards to framerate etc. It is a very broad subject. The world map view on the other hand is just a simple game mechanic.

They're making a game engine, not a console. Think Crystal Tools v2.0.

They're making a game engine.
For example, FFXIII runs on the Crystal Tools engine (I believe)
Many games these days use the Unreal Engine, the Crytek 2 engine is another.
Think of it as a kind of 'kit' for building games

i will agree with u 100% everytime there is something to do with square enix these days they have to have cloud as their background image. They are constantly telling us that there won't be a remake, that it would take 2 long to redo, and that it would take up to much man hours to complete, but yet they keep putting his face all over the place. I think a remake is already in the works and they are keeping it super top secret and anybody that starts saying this and that about it they quickly come out with the same old story blah blah this and blah blah that....Come on already just let us know that u are making it sqenix and we will repay you with crap loads of money that is a guarantee.

So essentially, a game engine is a highly customizable set of tools and code that are the framework and backbones of a game.

I think they mean the next gen as is not this one but the next one. Otherwise whats the point of the article? Square already has games out for the current gen of consoles. But maybe something got lost in translation.

maybe they want the fans to think there might be a ff7 remake on it's way.

but i don't think so, because that one square-enix guy stated that it would take them way too long to remake ff7 vor HD consoles.. too bad!

Can someone explain how they can make an engine for consoles that dont exist yet. I thought game engines were sort of hardware specific, no? Like the way they've built an unreal engine for the iphone now. Obviouusly I dont understand properly

Next generation? i think they talking about 8th generation consoles, since the current console generation is 7th generation.

Great... now with this new game engine, not only will towns be too hard to do, but a variety of other environments as well. Woohoo!
How about bringing our more games for PS3 BEFORE you start creating for next gen first SE? So far FFXIII is all that has been released on the PS3...

By "engine" they mean a developed program designed for providing the digital needs for advanced executions. Basically, they want to have a driver that will support more than what is currently available. An example would be how they continue to release Daedalus updates that continue to improve frame rate and allow sharper graphics.

Perhaps they are planning to introduce a future MMORPG capable of downloading updates during game play and possibly clock higher than the systems allow today...without harm to the system among others... Perhaps, FFVII is behind this demand for a "Next Generation Engine"... However, we cannot say for sure. What if...if I may speculate...they in fact did NOT want the engine for a remake, but for an after story. Perhaps Advent Children wasn't enough or the end... How many of you think that Sephiroth could just be "a memory"? Or what if They(Squenix) were under developement of a compilation of FF's that surpasses Dissidia by being an ACTUAL adventure? Speculate on that...

Also, if you are going to call me a fanboy...make sure that it is of Final Fantasy and not just VII. My personal favorite is IV. Kain FTW!!!

PS: Golbez(a) in Dissidia, in place of Genesis Rock's "Time to part", he should say, "Time to rock!" Golbez(a) is a TOTAL rocker...

LOL "Time to rock!"

I thought of FF XIV when they said "large scale client programming". Anyway, if there is such an engine in mind, I'm pretty sure they already have information about (at least) one of the next gen consoles and probably some sort of prototype.
