Spring Update: increased controls against foreign content downloading |
Ó
The Spring Dashboard Update, UK community manager AceyBongo reports, will revamp the way those accounts work. If you have signed up for an Xbox Live account in a country different from where you live you need to read the following carefully. When the Spring Dashboard Update goes live weÂ’re making some big changes to the way Xbox Live accounts work. Within around 24-48 hours after the Spring update hits you will no longer be able to access Xbox Live Marketplace content that is not available in your region. That means that, for instance, if you live in the UK and you want to download content that is available in the US and not available in the UK, you will no longer be able to do it.
The justification provided - as in the official line from Corporate - is that this is meant to protect "the quality of Xbox Live content" by ensuring that licensing agreements are not broken in the distribution (and restriction of such). The between-the-lines message is that Microsoft could not police the borders, it seems that there will be less incentive for content providers to provide premium content to Marketplace.
AceyBongo clarifies a couple of things: if you have foreign content on your HDD already, it won't disappear - it's already yours (no matter how Microsoft frowns upon you). Additionally, if you have accounts outside of your home region, they won't be banned or deleted either. They just won't work anymore to download content from that region's Marketplace (there goes the utility).
It's as though the Marketplace knows the actual location of your Xbox 360.

I live in germany and _hate_ the german language when I play games or contents or whatever...
I don't need my japanese or US account, but I want an UK account in germany!

I also understand it has more to do with stupid laws than anything else. Laws made to give money to the media companies - whom I've come to personally hate as time goes on. I hope the power of the internet brings them all to their knees and someday we can enjoy quality programming world-wide.

Anyways, to be on topic, Im not really bothered by this. The marketplace has enough demos as it is, and the ones that are in other countries will eventually come to mine in time. Theyre doing it as a quality control kinda thing, so I can understand.
BTW, if you ever see AoxomamoxoA posting negatively towards the 360 just ignore it, it is an imposter (judging by the IP scan its the same person who goes by the name of Quixand). I own all three consoles, but play my 360 more than any of them. Peace!

Your IP address gives the location of your country, and with most of the popular ISP's even gives your ISP details. I thought that the posters on this site where at least educated enough to know basic stuff like this... And I know that this site is generally used by yanks who don't understand a lot of stuff so here's the proof.
Go to http://whatsmyip.org/ get your IP address from the top and then go to http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp enter it into that and bam, theres your location and ISP!

At least yanks know how to read.

And as for using *yank*, dont be a racist. You wouldnt like it if people judged you based soley upon your nationality, would you?

With a gamerscore of 45k its hard to believe youre getting shafted. Ive played a good amount of games out for 360 and I only have a score of 29k, so youve obviously gotten your hands on many more games than I have.
Region lock is there for quality assurance. That way, you dont buy a game thats in all Japanese when you clearly speak English. And as you know, once you open a game you cant take it back and get a full refund (or at least thats how it works here in the states).
Trust me man, as an owner of all three next gen consoles, youre gonna have a lot more games to choose from on 360 than you will with ps3 or even wii.

However I think that's something that will get many (if not all of them) users really pissed off.
It's their fault if content is crappy, not being as good as that from the U.S. and Japan.

i hope they don't mistake my U.S. account for my japan account and then make me not able to download regular content

Ip Address tracking or Where you bought your Console ( as in serial number/region coded number on Xbox 360 ) much like the region coded Xbox live points cards.
Cause i have an Ip blocker on my High Speed modem and that is linked to a router and than into my Xbox 360. After update i was unable to download US market plact content.
Varibles tends to point at Console region serial number
