Spring Update: increased controls against foreign content downloading

Is it legitimate access to content that hasn't hit the US/EU/JPN Xbox Live Marketplace yet, or is it smuggling under Microsoft's noses? If you're one of those who have a foreign Xbox Live account for the purpose of accessing content not available in your home region, prepare to be hit by border controls.

Deine papiere, bitte. Your papers, please. - Image 1The Spring Dashboard Update, UK community manager AceyBongo reports, will revamp the way those accounts work.

If you have signed up for an Xbox Live account in a country different from where you live you need to read the following carefully. When the Spring Dashboard Update goes live weÂ’re making some big changes to the way Xbox Live accounts work. Within around 24-48 hours after the Spring update hits you will no longer be able to access Xbox Live Marketplace content that is not available in your region. That means that, for instance, if you live in the UK and you want to download content that is available in the US and not available in the UK, you will no longer be able to do it.

The justification provided - as in the official line from Corporate - is that this is meant to protect "the quality of Xbox Live content" by ensuring that licensing agreements are not broken in the distribution (and restriction of such). The between-the-lines message is that Microsoft could not police the borders, it seems that there will be less incentive for content providers to provide premium content to Marketplace.

AceyBongo clarifies a couple of things: if you have foreign content on your HDD already, it won't disappear - it's already yours (no matter how Microsoft frowns upon you). Additionally, if you have accounts outside of your home region, they won't be banned or deleted either. They just won't work anymore to download content from that region's Marketplace (there goes the utility).

It's as though the Marketplace knows the actual location of your Xbox 360.

» THIS IS SO G*Y

Why can't they just f*cking give the same content to everyone? I get so pissed when another country gets a demo and I don't, why the hell can't it be up for everyone? And now this

This is so stupid 0_o

I live in germany and _hate_ the german language when I play games or contents or whatever...

I don't need my japanese or US account, but I want an UK account in germany!

I don't get the point

» that's too bad

I was really happy to try out Brian Lara Cricket 07... game that was exclusive to europe on my 360. As well as a few japan demos (tenchu z and armored core 4) before their north american releases. Oh well.

Is what this is doing... Its like going, HAHA, you are in *****ing Iraq or in Japan or in Germany, and you live on a United States Military base, but we will consider your console german.... God, my best friend lives and germany, and now an awesome demo could come out here or something, and he won't be able to download it

by rogeraususa - 2007-05-03 21:59
» Oh NOES!!!

I'm military in Korea - I sure hope this doesnt kill my online service. Seeing how military-friendly MS has been to us servicemen and women in the past, I can't possibly see this as an improvement.

I also understand it has more to do with stupid laws than anything else. Laws made to give money to the media companies - whom I've come to personally hate as time goes on. I hope the power of the internet brings them all to their knees and someday we can enjoy quality programming world-wide.

» microsoft you are dead to me...

Europe is getting shafted more and more on release dates.. and this just put the final nail in the coffin. Now i am no ps3 fanboy (45,000 achievement points) but their approach to world love seems a bit more sane. No region lock on games full stop.

Hd-dvd and blu-ray a different story, but i wanna, as do most of you here want to play games.

rather than turning a blind eye, we get the shaft. i've personally spend over $200 off xbox usa downloading hd movies. that's money i'm gonna spent on the playstaion network on *****ty psone games i don't even want. ***** um.

by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-05-03 23:28
» The first and third is a fake...

hey fake AoxomamoxoA, thanks for stealing my name! Unfortunately you are incorrect, all xbox boys are not idiots.

Anyways, to be on topic, Im not really bothered by this. The marketplace has enough demos as it is, and the ones that are in other countries will eventually come to mine in time. Theyre doing it as a quality control kinda thing, so I can understand.

BTW, if you ever see AoxomamoxoA posting negatively towards the 360 just ignore it, it is an imposter (judging by the IP scan its the same person who goes by the name of Quixand). I own all three consoles, but play my 360 more than any of them. Peace!

by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-05-03 23:36
» Registered my name

Alright, well I decided to register my name so Quixand cant be childish and impersonate me. So again, anything from an unregistered AoxomamoxoA or basically anything anti-360 from AoxomamoxoA is obviously fake. Thanks again. Peace!

» 'Some trash talk that a yank would think is COOL'

"It's as though the Marketplace knows the actual location of your Xbox 360."

Your IP address gives the location of your country, and with most of the popular ISP's even gives your ISP details. I thought that the posters on this site where at least educated enough to know basic stuff like this... And I know that this site is generally used by yanks who don't understand a lot of stuff so here's the proof.

Go to http://whatsmyip.org/ get your IP address from the top and then go to http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp enter it into that and bam, theres your location and ISP!

by yank - 2007-05-04 02:57
» ...

You obviously misread that last statement. It wasn't meant to be dramatic, it's just letting you know that the marketplace will provide content based on the actual location of your Xbox.

At least yanks know how to read.

by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-05-04 03:05
» hmm...

If by *yank* you mean North Americans then I gotta disagree with you. Most of the people who comment on this site arent even over the age of 15, or at least their mentality shows that in their posts, so of course they wouldnt know what IP is and does. Half of these people only know how to immaturely bash someone because they didnt buy the same console as them.

And as for using *yank*, dont be a racist. You wouldnt like it if people judged you based soley upon your nationality, would you?

by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-05-04 03:15
» well

You wanna play games, and yet youre gonna get a PS3? Thats a bit ironic. I only own 2 games for my PS3 and neither one of them are incredibly entertaining, the rest of the games out for PS3 that I want I already have on 360.

With a gamerscore of 45k its hard to believe youre getting shafted. Ive played a good amount of games out for 360 and I only have a score of 29k, so youve obviously gotten your hands on many more games than I have.

Region lock is there for quality assurance. That way, you dont buy a game thats in all Japanese when you clearly speak English. And as you know, once you open a game you cant take it back and get a full refund (or at least thats how it works here in the states).

Trust me man, as an owner of all three next gen consoles, youre gonna have a lot more games to choose from on 360 than you will with ps3 or even wii.

» -_-

its more than just a pitty that you'll get f*cked in your ***... -_-

I'm from Japan and have my Xbox from Japan and I have an japanese account and I dont wanna have a F*CKING German account just because I live here...

Yay I won't get any Updates for my Games...

Well... slowly i understand why ppl make copies... -_-

say we should do one of those online fan websites that gathers online signatures of people so we can express our frustration!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! Just like they did with the limited edition Bioshock game request to TAKE2

by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-05-04 08:18
» Actually, it is.

Yank is just as racist as Jap or any of the other words that critique someones nationality that I do not care to mention.

by Tiredofthisbullsh*t - 2007-05-04 16:45
» F*ck you Micro$h*t

I play with $2 double-layer dvd's, and I don't care if Micro$ucks is trying to stop content leakage, to call it like that.

However I think that's something that will get many (if not all of them) users really pissed off.

It's their fault if content is crappy, not being as good as that from the U.S. and Japan.

by benz - 2007-05-05 00:39
» haha

haha the 360 wont know where i am cuz my country is not listed

by cody - 2007-05-05 01:58
» oh well

i better just hurry up and download all the demos i want before the update

i hope they don't mistake my U.S. account for my japan account and then make me not able to download regular content

by tha - 2007-05-05 02:18
» Stupid move

I live in a country that haven't got Live Marketplace (Iceland) and we are forced to shop our stuff from other "Regions". It would be interesting to know how MS is planning to deal with that situation... or are they just going to forget about us. I guess few others countries in europe would like to know.

by Face - 2007-05-17 05:58
» Yeah whatever

So basically my understanding is Microsoft is doing this through what means ?

Ip Address tracking or Where you bought your Console ( as in serial number/region coded number on Xbox 360 ) much like the region coded Xbox live points cards.

Cause i have an Ip blocker on my High Speed modem and that is linked to a router and than into my Xbox 360. After update i was unable to download US market plact content.

Varibles tends to point at Console region serial number
