Spring Dashboard update - Backups work fine |
Ó
You've probably heard enough about the just-released Spring Dashboard update already (Previous coverage: here, here and here), so we won't bore you guys with any more duplicate coverage. If you've been under a large rock all this while, our previous coverages will bring you up to speed with the latest happenings regarding the Dashboard update. The update brings a lot of great new features making your Xbox 360 experience that much more enjoyable.
Anyways, the main reason for this article is to douse the suspense surrounding the fate of people who've modified their DVD drives with a hacked firmware to play pirated games, err backups. This might sound surprising: the latest Dashboard update doesn't mess with hacked DVD drives; meaning that if you've modified your DVD drive firmware, you'll still be safe with the latest update. People having Hitachi drives haven't been lucky enough to get regular updates to the hacked firmware, but even that doesn't matter, they're safe too!
While this doesn't rule out the possibility that Microsoft might be collecting data regarding these hacked drives and waiting to do something a little later, it's safe to say that's close to being improbable. Hackers, like Commodore4Eva, have made claims that they have complete control over the DVD drive and that Microsoft can't really do anything with it. Even though Microsoft might have something up their sleeve, it would be pretty risky to do something now.
In related news, Commodore4Eva has also announced that he is working on an Xtreme Firmware v2.4 for Hitachi users which would include the latest Disc Jitter update recently packed in Xtreme 5.3 for Samsung drives. We'll keep you posted on C4E's work, stay tuned.

I turnd on my xbox today to find that the spring update was here so ofcorse i updated with my GOW still in the drive after the reboot my xbox dvd drive started to make horriable sounds "relly loud spin up bad ticking and clanking" whene it finaley stoped the tray icon said "Play DVD" so i clicked it then and got a screen that said "to play this disk. put it in an xbox 360 console" i get that screne ever time i reinsirt it and if i boot with it in the tray the tray icon reads "Unplayble Disc" the game worked fine >20hs ago am i the only one??
what is disc jitter?
wait, did you try any other 360 games or just GOW? Did you try playing DVD movies as well or audio cds? If none of those works then you probably have a bad dvd reader in your 360. And if that is the case, then maybe the spring update does run something of an update to the dvd flash. Did you have your dvd player modded?
Also a silly question since i'm a newb at this 360 thing, if you mod your 360 and put in a burned game can you still play the game on xbox live? Wasnt sure if its per license or not.

I updated my firmware to 5.3 on my Tosh-Sam drive today before doing the Spring Update. I've tested about 6 backups and they all work correctly. What firmware are you running?
But all the other super reliable PS3 fantards said the update bricked their consoles!
So before the spring update I would use my old Logitech Playstation 2 USB gaming keyboard on my 360 to type messages or text input because everybody knows how much of a pain in the ass it is to input text using the controller.
So today I update my 360, and guess what.. My keyboard no longer works. Oh hey look, Microsoft is coming out with a keyboard accessory for the controller, what a coincidence. KISS MY ASS MICROSOFT!!!
maybe u should try a keyboard not designed for a competing company's console...lol
Hi all
Im on New Zealand with a PAL 360.
Updated and no brick :-D
The update bricked my console!
i never ever flashed my drive dident get around
to finding a via sata card
old xbox games work dvd movies work but the only xbox 360 game i have is GOW someone gaft my crackdown :(
does it matter if i update with xtreme52??
and ir works fine with latest dash (gash) update.
Roll on forza 2
omg can u be any more stupid. microsoft isnt gonna release an update just to make it so we cant use usb keyboards so they can sell more. mine worked fine before and after the update. ever think maybe its your keyboard itself?
After update, everything works fine.
nothing has exploded, backups work fine.
now waiting for Halo beta, and Forza 2 !!!
M$ will drop the banhammer on modded 360s the week before Halo3 comes out.
Just like it happened for us users who had modded xboxes got xboxes banned a week before halo2.
u'll see
I updated my dvd(TS-H943/MS28) firmware from 5.2b to 5.3a then i connected to XBL then updated to the latest dash and everything works fine even my backups.
There is no way for MS to detect a modified drive so this is pretty much not going to happen. They would also be taking a risk if they seriously started banning or blocking consoles with their disc jitter method cause most likely some non modded drives would fail as well. So to some it up, its just not going to happen. They are selling the BenQ drives and locking down the firmware on them now.
mine did this as well
it says unplayable disc everytime and was working fine before i turned it off last night
Had the same, was playing Dead Rising the night before, i then update, it stops the game working, then my lights mess up and now have no lights and carn't connect a wireless controller.
Taking it to GaMe tomorrow
i read somewhere that "Disc jitter is the measurement of disc noise"
i upgraded my 360 xtreme firmware 4.2 and worked fine
I have never flashed my drive, i have the hitatchi one. I have updated with this dash update. Only thing is i was thinking of flashing my drive. Is it safe to do it after the dash update, or not?
to wait until the newest hitachi firmware comes out to prevent ms banning you with their new checks. Then read some tutorials several times then flash carefully.
Thanks, will do. I know what i'm doing to flash it. Already had thing apart and hooked up to my PC but got coldfeet as there wasn't really any point in flashing it at the time. Will wait.
OMG the new gui SUCKS!!!
The "Marketplace" blade is useful, but they changed the whole f-ing menu!
It now is a split view with info to the right and a compressed list to the left and it looks like a s***ty mess even on my 21" Philips CRT!!!
This is the kind of things witch makes me wish I've saved money for a PS3 instead!
I put my trust on M$ and this is what I get?
Bad move M$, bad move...
update works a treat
I have the SAME keyboard, and it along with my Saitek work fine after the update.
And to pappillow, the keyboard does work, look it up. It's just a standard USB keyboard, doesn't matter if it says PS2 on it
The marketplace has never looked better to me, everything is streamlined and everything actually loads within a reasonable time now, it's great. Looks fine on a 32" Sony CRT HDTV, don't know what you mean by "sh*tty mess"
