Spielberg 'blown away' by Halo movie script, wants in |
Spielberg dipping his hands into the golden Halo franchise? Not entirely surprising, and according to film site IESB, "solid and confirmed three times over with studio executives and close ties to CAA". That's right, the man behind the epic movies Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones and Transformers would like to be a part of the Master Chiefs battles against the Covenant, in the full glory of the big Silver.
According to the reports, Steven Spielberg was "blown away" by what screenplay writer Stuart Beattie did with the story, the script of which is entitled "Halo: The Fall of Reach". Both director and writer are thus said to be "heavily negotiating" for the movie.
Do note though that the director, if ever the negotiations work out, will be putting on his Producer's hat, and not the directorial cap. If that be the case, then who could he possibly be eyeing for the directorial task?
Meanwhile, here's how Beattie described his script for the movie last year. Guess it was definitely no joke after all.
The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or "conscripted" by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117.
The script then takes us through the horrific first contact with the Covenant hordes on the doomed colony world of Harvest, and then climaxes with the spectacular fall of the UNSC forward base on Reach, during which every other Spartan is slaughtered.
The script also gives detailed outlines for the second movie, HALO: RISE OF THE FLOOD, which takes place entirely on the Halo ringworld, and the third and final movie, HALO: BATTLE FOR EARTH, which roughly follows the events of Halo 3, the game.
One cool advantage of this first script is that (like the shark in JAWS) you don't even see the Covenant until halfway through the movie. And because all the creatures are CGI creations, this cuts the budget down dramatically and makes a first Halo movie that much more viable. For Halo fans, it's like the prequel that provides all the answers to questions they've thought about for years. For non Halo fans, it's an exciting action movie that provides a clear, concise introduction to a world five hundred years in the future with relatable characters and a terrifying alien menace.
You know the drill: until official word is out, this is tagged as rumor.

I read the book a long time ago and I'm excited to see how close my imagination is to the movie. Can't wait to see Covenant in real life! =)
steven is gonna do this it WILL be good
I hope someone makes a Halo movie, because it deserves to be made. All the better if its Spielberg. If you read the books and browse the halowiki you realize Halo actually has a very deep and emotional story that would lend itself well to a great movie. I guess on its surface it does seem generic, aliens wiping out humanity, been there done that. But then you notice every single thing in the halo world, from the characters to the locations to even the weapons, all have long back stories, and the covenant aren't just savages wiping out the humans for no reason like in most alien stories.
Just so long as Michael Bay doesn't touch it, I'd like to see it made
Turning my post into a Bing ad for Bay, god I hate that guy
In real life?
Maybe master chief will survive a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge
It's not gonna be good it's gonna be a big hairy ballsack.
Halo seems like one of the most practical games to make into a movie, even if it wasn't character driven. So it's nice to hear that if someone does make it, they wouldn't just be cashing in on the franchise. I also like the "Spartan" parallels in the script to real life Spartans.
This can end 2 ways
it will be a big hit
or it will be a super flop
because if the story and action aint done right
u Know what will happen
flame wars of EPiC Proportions will start
Even if it's done in the best way possible, hardcore fans of the game will not be satisfied. Especially since this seems like won't follow the game to a "T" and be more like it's own story in the same universe with the same origins.
I'll probably enjoy it as long as it doesn't end up as like the steel ballsack of crap that Transformers 2 was.
will be the most let down. Hardcore fans of the GAMES probably won't give a crap how bad it is and still go watch.
it would be great
haha
Does he bum microsoft or what?
I doubt this will be good as there was no interesting plot in halo and most game adaptations are crap anyway.
I say they get Neill Blonkompf to direct as he captures that Halo alien goofiness in Distric 9 pretty well. I never though Halo was epic or scary. Seems that the aliens were pretty silly and not menacing at all to me.
Not to mention, lot's of people were suspecting that District 9 was basically a test to see how well he can capture that Halo look and translate it.
Plus he did this
