We have confirmation, folks! Sky TV really is coming to the Xbox 360 to give us the first ever console-based live TV service. The rumored partnership is real, and it will be groundbreaking.

The press release states that the service will be headed first to Ireland and UK Xbox LIVEs come autumn of this year. While no specific channel line-up was given, it is confirmed that we will be able to access blockbuster movies, entertainment shows, documentaries, kid-friendly programs, sports, and more.

The new service will also offer a range of unique interactive services, such as an additional range of applications to enhance the viewing experience further, ie. in Sky Sports. You'll also be able to communicate with one another through the broadband connections, in real time.

Sky's Commercial Group director, Stephen Nuttall, says of the partnership:

Our partnership with Xbox is a further example of our commitment to put choice and control in the hands of customers. Xbox owners now have a range of ways to access Sky content and can pick and choose the platform and packages that are right for them. We are extremely excited about the opportunity of reaching Xbox owners who are looking to experience Sky for the first time, as well as giving our existing customers yet another way to experience the content they love.

And as for the side of Microsoft, Neil Thompson, Head of Xbox UK and Ireland, comments:

Our customers have told us that they want the opportunity to use their consoles as a way to access TV and once again Xbox has pulled off an entertainment fist with amazing content and rich interactive experience. The combination of Sky's leadership in content creation and aggregation and our own in creating a constantly evolving new generation of rich 360 entertainment experiences means we are one step closer to our goal of offering Xbox owners the best entertainment experiences out there, whether it's movies, music, games, interactive experiences or high quality TV.

Sky TV isn't the first console based live tv service, Play TV is which belongs to the PS3. I think that this is a pathetic but clever attempt in challenging the PS3 in the multimedia department

» This > Play TV

You don't need a stupid attachment.

» Hmm

I wonder if this service is going to more expensive then regular cable tv,, per content..

I've noticed that a great number of people would like to take advantage of the gamers deep pockets.

and a great number of people would try this service just because their 360 will do it, and damned the torpedos with the inflated price.

... I'm not just dissing the 360 here, im dissing this entire console generation. it seems this generation they want to pimp services to us and all because we are a very large target 0.o umm i mean ( market base,,) pft..

In the end the fact that a gaming console provides this service is no different then seeing advertisment on a billboard.

They still paid microsoft a lump sum of money to allow them access to their market base (us)...

Fanboys wont see how we are being pimped out to the highest bidder... :(

oh well.. i've said enough...

..This isn't anything like play TV. Play TV is a stupid tivo. This is actual.. well, basically using your 360 as a cable box, sort of. With interactive channels and whatnot. ...Thats like saying a DVD player and a PC are the same thing because they both play movies.

» Wrong again

Not so much a cable box, it's basically streaming video. So you get to tie up your internet connection to watch TV. It would have to be VEEERY cheap for me to be interested. Plus you get to deal with buffering errors, crap quality and the rest of the fun that comes with streaming video. And they'll probably have some stupid setup where gold members get something special. Now, if they wanted to make it free to gold and pay for silver, I can see that working out.

» totally agree

I would be glad if they did this FREE for gold members, but knowing moneybags mcgee Bill Gates or whoever is the big wig fat cat behind it all, they will charge a stupid price for it. The whole waiting for videos to load etc will probably happen, and the fact that not everyone has unlimited broadband, seems like it might be kinda crap.

most stuff on TV sucks, and i'm sure most the stuff on TV actually kills brain cells it's that bad.

Stick with the movie marketplace i say. Balls to all this 'pimping out my xbox' crap like ShadeyProphet said.

LOL! And us PS3 owners don't need a stupid attachment hard drive! PS3's come with them, standard!

» @cactus lover

Yeah, well what if you want to take your hard drive over to a friends, or upgrade the hard drive?

by sony_player - 2009-05-31 18:13
» ^

Why take the hard drive when any flash drive will work? and ps3 hard drives are way cheaper to upgrade than 360 ones

I'm a PS3 owner as well Catus. This is still better.
