Should MS be concerned with the rising demands for DVD+R/-R DL?

dvdJapan-based research firm Fujiwara releases today the results of its study concerning the controversial single-sided double-layer discs. In case you are wondering why these discs are controversial, be informed that they are currently being used for making backups of Xbox 360 software. Anyway, as we have said, Fujiwara releases the results today and the numbers are not in Microsoft's favor.

"Global DVD+R/-R DL disc shipments are expected to reach 100 million in 2006 and should double in 2007," says the Japanese firm. This is rather alarming as the sales of the said disc had not been impressive prior to the attack of the hacks. DVD+R/-R DL discs have as of now limited applications and a high retail value. Given that, manufacturers are more optimistic saying the disc is not used purely for pirating purposes. Accordingly, the demands are also coming from the extending penetration rate of DL-support recorders.

While Microsoft is yet to take some serious actions, the corporation on the other hand has always maintained its anti-piracy policy. On one occasion, it even noted that, "the health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive, both from manufacturers and the local companies that support them."

Currently, shipments of the said discs are mainly coming from Taiwanese manufacturers like CMC Magnetics and Ritek. The former, reportedly, has market share of 30% while Ritek has captured around 60%.

DVD DL not popular because of price

DL media for DVDs hasn't been very mainstream because of the price. A pack of 30 DL disks cost alot more then a pack of 100 single layer disks. While its fairly obvious that a good number of Xbox360 owners have modded firmwares and DVD burners, its not to a point that you can say that the sale of DVD DL is getting better because of the amount of people using burned games. But, if this seems to be true, then Microsoft is taking a huge hit in the software portion of the console sales. This might be something that will force microsoft to take more extreme measures to ensure people cant play backup copies. I usually don't buy any Xbox360 games unless the multiplayer portion of the game is worth the extra cost. Like most people here, you get the firmware and download from torrents.

why does qj always jump the gun with accusations? DL discs arent just used for 360 backups im pretty sure the number that are is very low at best, Dl discs are selling more now because now almost all pcs have a DL burner and DL media is getting cheaper ppl have movies and large files to backup these days. nice to know QJ is supporting putting the blaime on MS.

theres n ot enough people on this planet "hacking" to make a company fail. You dont lose money from copies... believe it or not. if someone sits down and honestly thinks about it, youll see that these companies that fail, are becaues thier product a. sucks, b. dont market it or both.
