Should Microsoft Extend Its Xbox 360 Warranty Period To A Full Year?

Ó

xbox 360A couple of weeks ago, we featured the heartbreaking story of an Xbox 360 Fan Boy who was told to pay up if he wanted his console fixed. While it wasn't his fault, since his Xbox 360 was suffering from a manufacturing defect, he was told by an MS CSR that he has to foot the bill because his console's 90-day warranty has expired. Does that sound fair to you? If you said "no" you can do something else than shake your head.

There's an on-line petition calling for changes in Microsoft's warranty policy - mainly extending it from three months to one year. The petition was started after several Xbox 360 owners complained of running into console manufacturing defects months after the warranty period.  Here's the full text of the petition:

We the undersign believe that the MICROSOFT CORPORATION needs to revise the current length of warranty on the XBOX360 videogame system. At the present time XBOX360 owners within the United States of America are only protected by a three(3) month warranty period through the manufacturer(Microsoft). This length of time is not sufficient. The minimum warranty period should be one(1) year for all systems.

Our backing for this claim comes after large numbers of consumers who purchased systems, are now experiencing defects with the product. These defects cause the product to become un-operational. The company (MICROSOFT) has only been replacing system up to 3 months old with either a)new systems, or b) “refurbished” systems. After the 3 month period consumers are expected to pay between fifty(50) and One Hundred and Twenty-Nine(129) dollars for repairs. This warranty is outrageous, and is in place to protect the company and a product that is obviously inherently flawed. Many consumers have had units replaced 2 or more times, in some cases upwards of 5 to 7 times, within the past 8 months since the system launch.

We the undersigned are DEMANDING that MICROSOFT re-evaluates and amend the current warranty and make a new warranty retroactive so all past consumers are covered. At this time we are seeking replacement systems for ALL consumers who are experiencing defective hardware.

Signing the petition won't guarantee MS will have a change of heart. But if enough of you Xbox 360 Fan Boys get together, who knows? Isn't that how Coke fans brought the Coke Classic back from the cola graveyard? If you want to join this "fight" click on the 'Read' link below.

It seems the QJ staff does not know the meaning of the word "Fanboy". 'But if enough of you Xbox 360 Fan Boys get together, who knows?' Even if you aren't a "Fan Boy", and believe that it is Microsoft's problem and they should take responsibility, you should sign this partition.. I don't know about you, but I do not like to be called a fanboy for anything, so please, understand the term "Fan Boy" before using it.

hope this doesn't happen to Sony

coz it too only has 3 months warranty....I think...

You mean it isn't already?

I guess things are different in the USA. In NZ standards are alot higher an item like a DVD player, heater or and Xbox 360 must have a warranty of atleast a year.

UK

This is region specific I guess, most countries around Europe its LAW for tech like the 360 to have a minimum 6-12month warranty period. obviously US doesnt have this, so the company makes one up to avoid mass profit drops, as it already losses money for console made :S

In europe

The warranty period for law is of a minimum 2 years in Europe for any type of electronic device. The first year is charged to the maker, the second to the shop.

Warranty

Or u could just pay the extra $30 to extend the warranty. I buy warranty for jewlery, electronics, and my car. Never expect a company to cover your ass. $30 is only 7.5% of your final cost of a premium system. Not to bad if you ask me.

What a Surprise!!

That's another reason Microsoft is full of S***. How can a big time American company offer a 90 day warranty on a piece of hardware like the 360. I don't like the 360 but still that isn't fair to comsumers who buy the product.

Badly designed System

Everyone knows that the design was horribly flawed. The console has no tolerance for being placed in "most" places where you can place other electronics. I have a closed cabinet entertainment stand where all i see is the TV and everything else is hidden inside the stand. Well lets say the Xbox360 couldnt handle even 2 hours to gaming before it overheated. I had to modify the system for better cooling and thats just plain stupid. Then the problem with scratched disks. Whats the point in having quick dis-connect cables if even the slightest jerk to the console will cause a disk to get a scratch. 90 day warrenty on electronics is a joke. Thats like saying we designed this without testing and there could be problems, so we will only offer the minimum period by law. Its highly doubtful the PS3 will have the same issues but it will have some none the less. At this time the Xbox360 IMO is the worse console I have ever owned. I have been buying consoles since Atari and never have i had problems with a console "one month" after buying it until the Xbox360.

I would never

accept a three-month warranty on any computer/electronic hardware. I live in europe, and as mentioned above, I have a full year warranty by law (2-years doesn't apply in all european countries as far as I know). Pay 30 bucks more for extended warranty!!?? That's just hopeless. It's not that $30 would kill anyone who can afford the system, but really. If they can't give a full year warranty, the product probably sucks.

Warranty

IDK European laws but here in America it is pretty standard to recieve a 60 or 90 day warranty on electronics. I stood in line for 8 hours to be one of the first to buy the 360 and when I heard that 1% of 360 consoles had a problem I got worried. Microsoft then extendened my warranty to a 6 month free of charge. So although I do feel bad for the small precentage of people who have had problem I cannot complain after 8 months of gaming I have had not had any problems with my 360 crashing.

2 year warranty in Finland

3 months warranty? That's just plain stupid. Thank god for EU, at least we get 1-2 years warranty on electronics. In Xbox 360's case, it's 2 years, at least in Finland.

Warrenty

After I bought my 360 in January, and had to have it fixed numerous times, i was told that by law they had to have the warrenty good for 6 months, then every time I had it fixed they added 90 days and having it repaired 4 times gave me a warrenty good till jan 27 :(

It's not just MS http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Warranties As you can see the majority of Sony's systems are 90 days as well, except for the psp and slim ps2.... It should still be a year, the laws EU has should definately be adopted worldwide, these *****ers make enough money as it is without screwing the consumers...

Meh

It is kinda gay that they are allowed to give us a 90 day, but you're stupid if you don't opt for the extended. It's like, what, $40? If you can afford a $400 videogame console you sure has hell can afford that too. And like the guy above me said, the original PS2 had/has a 90 day, I'd expect no different for the PS3, so stop making it seem like it's just Microsoft. I've had my system since launch with no problems, no-one cares if you think it's badly designed because you are one of the 4% who had theirs break (#8). If you dislike the 360 so much, get the fuuck off the 360 site.

scam

can't u just scam back on them? put down the money and get a core system and carefully remove the 'serial sticker' superglue it to the old system and return it in exchange for a few games? I dunno, im at work and I didnt bring my xbox in today. Can someone check out this scenerio?

Its not the warrenty that everyone has a problem with

#14 Im sorry but nearly 100% of people who place their xbox360 in a closed cabinet have had overheating issues within a few hours. And its not broken you idiots, if you even read my post and "understood" it, you would know. So i guess the price of an Xbox360 permium is really 450+ because after taxes and extended warrenty thats how much its gonna cost. Dont even start that BS, everyone knows that people dont expect to buy extended warrentys because most of the problems that happen with electronics are user related and not hardware related. If you accidently drop your xbox360 and it breaks, the warrenty does not cover that. The only thing the warrenty covers is manufacturing problems and thats what almost every problem with the Xbox360 is, a manufacturing problem, from overheating, to scratched disks. This kind of stuff you dont expect from any console especially for something thats over 400 dollars. Would you be satisfied if you bought an Ipod with a 90 day warrenty and all of a sudden 4 months after it wouldnt play MP3s anymore. And then you go online and find that thousands of people have this same problem. And since its out of warrenty and was in fact a manufacturing issue, Do you just buy a new one or get Apple to fix all the broken ipods that was in a bad batch?
by - 2006-07-31 07:32:58
bad batch?

Actually, last month...my first 360 didnt turn on at all (no light patterns either)...I brought it back to gamestop the next day and apparently they had a bad batch. We took 4 premiums and 3 cores out of the boxes switched cables from one to the other all different outlets to find out what would make at least one of the xboxes work figuring it was a power problem. At one point one blew it's fans and just died down. I was so pissed. Not a single one out of that batch there worked...they called up another gamestop in the mall and had them test one out. I had to go 40 mins outta my way to get a working system. I got the extended warranty for 40 bux for the hell of it. Just incase. You never know.

What goes around...

According to another newsflash on this site European custumers will have to pay more than two times the US-price for Test Drive Unlimited. Looks like you guys are paying for our extended warranty. Thanks.

MS and users both at fault

The XBOX 360 runs hot, but won't overheat unless you don't give it ventilation or run it for 6 hours straight in 100deg weather. I've never had any problems of any kind except for 1 lockup while playing Oblivion (it turns out it was the game's fault due to the way it uses the hard drive to reduce loading times.) Like manufacturing anything, there are bad batches of machines that leave the factory. I think most of the failures are because people treat the 360 like any older console that doesn't push silicone chips to the limit. New faster chips make much more heat and require much more cooling. I placed mine in my entertainment center with a cooling fan mounted to the rear forcing air through toward the back. This setup works perfectly. I'm sure PS3 will make even more heat and they will have to come up with a creative solution to fix it. I predict the PS3 will also shut down and may break if you cram it in a unventilated space.
