Shane Kim: We've reached a level third-party playing field with MGS Rising

Shane Kim, Microsoft VP - Image 1With the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Rising for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Shane Kim believes that Microsoft has "effectively" reached a "level third-party playing field" as far as exclusive titles are concerned. He made note of this observation in an in-depth interview with Gamasutra, talking about Project Natal, gaming initiatives and more.

Said the VP for Microsoft,

I still think exclusive content is really important. First of all, in games, we've said for a long time that a key part of our strategy with Xbox 360 was a level third-party playing field. Now we've effectively done that with Metal Gear Solid coming to the Xbox 360.

The economics are such that third parties also have to support multiple platforms, and you can't ignore Xbox 360. It's the second leading platform.

It's too much of a business-driver to just be focused on a single platform if you're not a first party. So, it's up to the first parties to deliver the bulk of the exclusive game content.

Now, we're having success with third parties because we can still get exclusive downloadable content, because of the service we've built with Live and the business we've been able to generate for third-party publishers there.

But I also think we have to broaden our definition of exclusive content now. It has to include things like Xbox Live, because I do think Xbox Live is a real competitive differentiator for us.

And now Project Natal is going to be an exclusive thing, too. And so, we feel good about how that's shaping up, but it's really not about relying on third parties, because I don't think that that is sustainable, as we've proven. And it's up to each of us to differentiate on our own.

M$ has 1 good ps3 exclusive and they act like they have the whole gaming industry in equalibrium.....you can tell how much they crave PS3 exclusives yet try to hide it

1 look at PS3 exclusive and M$ fades out as PS3 still outshines all

all M$ got to keep their fanboys holding their breath is Natal..which imo is plain LAME....think about it what kind of games will actually be worth playing on that......it has no accuracy for FPS, how will it handle complex controls of rpgs, how do you play a racing game...not to mention how do you shift gears

Natal is ust another way to drop the game from nintendo Wii easy to ridiculously dumb block the balls coming towards type of game...........i like to see them dig themselves out of this one

that Project Natal is a complete gimmick. Almost as much a gimmick as the wii. Nothing against Xbox, but Natal looks stupid. You NEED buttons. NObody wants to spend *****loads of energy while trying to relax and play a game. And the controls aren't that good. Natal messed up half the time during the e3 demo.

Cool idea, will sell millions, but in the end everybody will regret buying it.

MGS 4, I've never played the series so I can't comment

all the other ones, make me want to buy a ps3 and I'd play them, but I got a 360 because it was cheaper and I don't have the money to shell out on video games.

Happy? +P

Uncharted 2 - unreleased

GoW 3 - unreleased

Heavy Rain - looks like *****, but I'll let it slide, still unreleased

MAG - unreleased

I might as well just start spouting off Gears of War 3, Halo 4, etc. but it's a moot point. Go play some Valkyria Chronicles and expand your experience.

Halo 3

Halo ODST

Halo Reach

Gears of War trilogy

Dead Rising

Mass Effect

Mass Effect 2 (still slated as PC/X360 exclusive)

Fable 2

Splinter Cell

Alan Wake

Crackdown 1 and 2

BTW after watching vids of Heavy Rain im gonna have to agree with Oryleh, it does look like sh*t. It looks like they're trying too much new stuff with it and the whole thing will just end up falling apart. It looked really weird.

Personally I greatly prefer the 360 lineup, mostly because I love Halo and Gears lols, but there are so many games I wanna buy nowadays it's crazy. I own or plan on buying every game on my list, plus I have MGS4, KZ2, Resistance 2, and plan on getting infamous, MAG, and Uncharted 2. This is thousands of dollars haha
