Shadowrun developer says: Xbox controller is superior to Mouse & Keyboard

ShadowrunFor many years, gamers have been debating if the analog sticks on console controllers are able to rival the traditional PC layout with Mouse & Keyboard in terms of precision and speed. With the announcement of Microsoft's Live Anywhere that puts Xbox Live and Windows Vista gamers into the same match, you'd expect that debate to heat up even more.

The FASA-developed Shadowrun, however, one of the first titles to make use of Live Anywhere, suggests that PC players might have to reconsider their stance once and for all.

"There will always be people that say the keyboard is better. In our game, we've found that's not the case.", said Bill Gross, Software Test Engineer at FASA. "When we first started testing it, the keyboard tended to have an advantage in long distance combat, and the controller had an advantage in close combat. You could do things quicker on the controller."

He explicitly mentioned that they had carefully balanced the two teams, so that there would be no big difference in skill, but even then, the Mouse & Keyboard combo constantly lost against the Xbox players. So for the developers, this meant they had to tweak the two versions of Shadowrun in order to balance out eventual controller advantages.

Obviously, those tweaks could give players even more excuses to come up with after a defeat - hopefully, when Shadowrun gets released, no one forgets to actually play the game...

» Sorry but skill level doesnt apply here.

You cant balanced out skill levels when comparing controllers and keyboard and mice.

This test doesnt work right. The reason is a controller has its limits. You can take the highest skilled person in Halo Xbox version and he will be no where near the skill level of the highest PC Halo Player that uses a keyboard and mouse.

With that said, the only way to perform an even matched test is to measure the average level of a keyboard and mouse user against the average level of a controller user.

I use a keyboard and mouse on the Xbox playing Halo2 and its much better then a controller by far.

I will give that the controller is superior in close range combat, but since I can switch keyboard profiles on the fly, i can adjust my sensitivity with the push of a button and nearly close the gap that the controller has in close range combat.

With that said, this test doesnt prove anything. Controllers are good as its easy to learn to use, while a keyboard takes a bit more time. But a controller reaches its limits in performance while a keyboard and mouse becomes nearly limitness in how well a person can control.

The human thumb isnt a precision finger to use. You dont use it in many situations that require precision and accuracy. This is why the keyboard and mouse is used in FPS games.
