Sequel-trouble steaming: Left 4 Dead fans signing up for a boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam

Left 4 Dead - Image 1

Usually, when a good title is announced to have a sequel, fans take it as good news. That's not the case apparently for Left 4 Dead's (Xbox 360, PC) community base. Over at Steam's Community Groups, some 15,000 members (and counting) are calling for a boycott of Left 4 Dead 2, and with a lot of reasons to back them up.

Not getting why they're all so upset? Let them count the ways:
  • Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
  • Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
  • The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
  • The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
  • The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
  • L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1Â’s visual aesthetic
  • The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
  • L4D2Â’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
  • The community has lost faith in ValveÂ’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release
As someone who plays Left 4 Dead, probably that one reason that would make me agree the most would be the bit on the sequel being way too identical to the first game. If Valve will only make it like a different version of L4D1, then might as well just send the updates over, right? No need to make a "new" one. They did promise a hell lotta bunch, after all.

Although am thinking, a Part 2 could definitely be a great avenue for them to put new things to the table. Say, a new set of characters in a different town (but within the same timeframe as Part 1), maybe? So it's gonna be something like a parallel, simultaneous event or something. Maybe they can even have the Part 1 team radio in a special "guest appearance". And new special Infecteds. A more sensitive Witch, perhaps? One that gets startled by the noise around her as well (in which case they'll need to include a new silencer gun too!)? Or an invisible Hunter?

Oh, the possibilities! Pardon me for getting carried away. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll leave this debacle for now and go slay a Tank.

» I'll have to agree!

I'm looking forward to Left 4 Dead 2, but I am really pissed off that they'd come out with it so soon! I mean I want more content for the one I currently have. Now in a slight defense of Valve, they never said that L4D2 would be a disc release. What if it was a download? In theory, If you own L4D, you bought it to play it online, so, making sure everyone had access to 2 wouldn't be a problem... But I want new scenarios and enemies!

» eh?

Valve only will use the excuse "because of the xbox360" but the fact is the xbox is what funds their further PC development.

I'm kind of pissed as well, only because I bought the game like over a month ago. I wouldn't mind if they just made L4D2 as DLC for L4D.

LMAO that's the biggest joke ever! really, these fans are basically saying, I hate L4D fix it so I like it, and then maybe make a 2nd one.

well a big F U to all complaining. You've got a full year of enjoyement with L4d before L4d2 comes out, it is now at real bargain price everywhere, a sequel is really good news.

I can't believe what I'm seeing on the internet.

I remember back in the days when FF8 came out, then one year later FF9 came. OMG Square has ripped us off!!!

OMG Madden 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 are all one year from each others! I'm really pissed! Splinter cell 1 2 and 3 came out really close to each other, that's the end of the world!

OMG! You companies you are ripping us off!

No they're not, stop complaining, if you don,t want to buy L4d2 do not. But please keep your idiocy to yourself.

» I signed it

Reason being I paid $30 for L4D new from Target. HOWEVER, all the "new" content sucked. The lighthouse level is a joke, and the two unlocked campaigns were really badly broken for the zombie players because the standard versus tactic of "turtle in the nooks and crannies" make it impossible to spawn. Valve closed off many of the smaller side rooms but none of the holes in the ceiling. The net result is that players can't spawn, but zombies pour in from above. With a lot of the debris cleared out from the tunnels, there's no way to play the old campaigns on versus.

You actually took the time you complain about the complainer.

by The Frenchman - 2009-06-08 05:42
» I did take the time to complain about complainers...

Because it seems everything people can do is complain nowadays...

when you were a kid and a sequel came out, you enjoyed it and you shut up. Gamers are now so cool and elitist that they are the one to decide wether a game should exist or not. This is the pinnacle of arrogance. And that, yes gets on my nerve and makes my rant 100% justified as basically what this *****ty list of complaints they've made says is;"I'm a dumb elitist fanboy who will kickback whenever there is a change of plans."

It's like those MGS/FF/Zelda/Mario fanboys... Which is a testament of how good L4D was.

Now please shut up and enjoy your games.

They'll release L4D2 anyways because they know people will still buy it.

Am I the only one that got bored of this game a week after it's release? It just gets too repetitive. It was a great idea though but needs more content.

that was a good one haru

by Master Chef - 2009-06-08 08:25
» You don't get it

People are complaining because L4D had next to no content to begin with, Valve promised additional content for the game, now they're releasing a similarly bare bones sequel at full price.

I agree with the people complaining about it, but I won't be signing the thing. I'll just let Valve know what I think by not buying L4D2.

Altho AFAIK Valve has not confirmed the price of L4D2. If they have someone please show me. So maybe L4D2 won't be $60 and all this complaining will be for nothing? I'd buy L4D2 at $30 or $40, but $60 is not cool

I WILL NEVER ENJOY ANYTHING APPROVED BY THE FRENCH.

» HA :D

I'm glad someone said it. He's prob the biggest reason I hate valve. New Valve that is. Old Valve use to care about their games. New Valve is all about makin the bucks.
