Forza Motorsport 2 photo-screenshot

Over at the 1P Start blogs, this "photo" of Turn 10's Forza Motorsport 2 caused a bit of ruckus - the type of ruckus that spilled itself over to Digg, even. Because apparently, when it was first revealed, a couple of people primarily thought that it was a picture, and not an actual screenshot from the game.

We're not surprised. The attention to detail really is amazing - make sure you click the above image to enlarge the pic; the thumbnail is nothing compared to the full-sized version. And while we've seen other Forza 2 pics (and whole vids too), what I find interesting in this photo-screenshot is the reflection on the bumper of the car. (Chris L.'s pants are wet again.)

Any innocent passer-by (with no clue whatsoever as to where he/she is) in these blogs would think that it really is an actual photo. But we know most of you are gamers, so... what's your take on this? How photo-realistic is it to you?

Well...

Though Forza 2 will obviously be a top tier game, when looking at that picture it still looks like a game to me. Heck I even went so far as to ask a friend of mine that doesn't play games what he thought about the picture and he even said "well, it kinda looks fake..." as in virtual, not photoshopped or anything... plus anyone that has seen the PGR4 screens in the May issue of OXM will probably agree that those cars look almost as real as it can get. Then again, Forza more than makes up for it in that it is a sim and will go on to have the greatest physics and racing mechanics in a racing game to date... So, I guess I'm saying yeah it looks great, but not amazing. Also looking at most the videos, the backgrounds need a bit more detail, not in the sense of replication of the real tracks, but as in maybe making things less bland, maybe work on the grass textures instead of making it all look like a big green blob. Yeah, I know when the car is moving you won't even notice, but when one crashes and the car is sitting there showing off some nice car damage for a few seconds, you might notice the not so nice backgrounds, and knowing how nit-picky some people are about the graphics in the games they play, they can afford to make things look a bit more lively. Luckily, they are still optimizing and making improvements as Forza is still a bit away from launching so, there is still time to make the game look even better than it does.

I think the gfx are great but I've yet to see a real life car with a pixelated rear spoiler. There would have to be something _seriously_ wrong with your eyes, maybe even blindness, to mistake this for real life.

The spoiler is barely noticeable, and i'm thinking it's a rare angle for the aliasing to occur, as the rest of the pic has super crisp edges, except there. Anyways, the reflections are definately amazing. Having a seperate reflection for each plane, rather then on the whole side/front/back of the car is a first....

Realistic reflections, unrealistic palette

Doesn't really matter how great the reflections are. The bottom line is that Forza 2 dropped the ball in one important respect that even PGR3 did not completely fail at: Lifelike overexposure. What do I mean? Watch a movie, wait for a sunlit scene. Bright, isn't it? Now watch almost any racer you'd care to name. Even when the shadows under the cars are clearly defined with sharp edges, and the skies are completely clear, the whole look of the imagery is... overcast. As though the sun is perpetually blocked by clouds. Attention to the color gamut is the solution. And it's so easy, it can be done on the PS2! The excuse for failing to achieve this look on current-gen consoles is incompetence.

cool

looking good but no other racing game will replace pgr in my collection

Looks like a game for sure...

The lighting gives it away. Also the backdrop - the colors aren't right for a real world shot, and the tail pipe on the foreground car looks like a game. I love Forza - but GTHD has them beat with graphics as of right now.

You're kidding me right?

Anyone that is hardcore into racing simulations knows that Forza, GT, and other console games completely suck with physics. They have good parts but miss a lot of areas where they need to simulate. If you want accurate physics then I suggest you try out some PC sims like NetKarPRO

HDR

I think your refering to High Dynamic Range lighting. I think Forza 2 uses it, you just can see it that well from the limited screens available.

you want completely realistic physics?

So if you hit a wall you want to crash and lose the race? I think the physics are pretty good and make the game fun, at least in the first one.

Looks Cool

The screenshot of this game looks realistic and that's what these developers want to push. I could see why people would get confused with the picture and it has also happend with the GT4 and GTHD Concept. I can't wait for this game.
