Rumor: Xbox 360 Elite to be phased out already?

Red Xbox 360 Resident Evil 5 - Image 1Hmm. What's this? Microsoft's about to phase out the Xbox 360 Elite model as a regular retail SKU? Well, if recent whispers are to be believed, this may start happening come second quarter of this year already!

This rumor comes from Fudzilla, and their sources - numerous retail sources, actually, which all apparently say the same thing - reveal that the Elite will be discontinued as a regular SKU. Instead, they'll be keeping Elite production to a bare minimum, and only offer them up for sale as part of Limited Edition bundles, like the most recent RE5 bundle.

The offshoot to this is that, with the Elite out of the picture, Microsoft supposedly will roll out a new regular SKU, one which will have a hard drive bigger than 120GB.

All this may be rumor for now, and it seems that Microsoft isn't even sure if this new move is final. The rumor continues by saying that they'll be closely monitoring sales of the red RE5 bundle, and from their make adjustments to Elite allocations.

but is nobody else kind of offended at the 60 and 120GB hard drives that are priced at 79.99 and 149.99

This is pretty disgusting to me.

Nowadays 60GB and 120gb are less than produced in ipods.

They honestly need to be much higher capacities.

You can get a western digital external harddrive for 80 bucks at 500GBs.

An increase in HD space might make me rethink buying an Xbox. The major problem I have with it *beside RROD* is the disproportionat ely small HD space for the price vs a ps3. If they release a xbox with a 120 GB HD for the same price as the current elite model, I most likely sold.

MS has some balls to charge $120-$150 for a $120 GB HDD... Minimum of $1 per GB. The difference between that and regular ones is so huge it's outrageous. I'm looking at a 500GB 2.5" HDD on NewEgg right now for $100... That's f*ckin 20 cents per GB

Please do not start fanboy BS here. The PS3 has an incredible service for what it's offering(free). So no need to call it crappy. As the saying goes you get what you payed for. And imo, the stuff XBL has(get when you pay for it) isn't mindblowing for me, personally, to want it over PSN. PSN has a perfect service that's fine for me and my needs. But, with that said however, there's no denying for what XBL offers is more than what PS3 offers to some gamers and can see the appeal.



@awaiskhan - I'm going to sit here and laugh to you and the other PS3 fanboys if or when Sony decided to have a fee for online gaming. Maybe then you fanboys would get a life and stop talking out of your A$$.

While I agree with you, you have to consider that what XBL offers with the little amount of money per month, it is better than PSN. There's no question it has features which appeals to certain hardcore online gamers. But I wouldn't call it mindblowing or light years away of the PSN. For what it's offering for free is amazing. Sure you don't get all the extra things you get for XBL if you pay, but I hardly think you can say none is better. One is obviously better, but it comes down to choice and your gaming needs.

The xbox 360 uses laptop HDDs in a hot swap SATA case.

Laptop hard drives the last time I looked aren't 80 bucks for 500gigs. You might be able to prove me wrong on that though.

You can get programs to run on your PC to BYO HDD to the xbox360 but naturally that voids your HDD warranty, who cares it's detachable anyway. So if you already own a 360 HDD you can take it apart and put a new HDD in there at whatever it costs you for a laptop HDD.

Or you can get a propper MS branded HDD with a full warranty and pay the extra for the "caddy" that the HDD comes in (to connect it to your 360), and not have to screw around with making it work for the 360.

Maybe you're not insulted now you know all the information.

Read my post, I said I was looking at a 2.5" HDD, which is a laptop hard drive, 500GB for $100. Not $80 sure, but I'm sure you can get one on sale on a website for that. In fact there are two 500GB drives for $100 on newegg, a seagate and a western digital.
