Rumor: next Xbox to have forward-compatibility |

In video gaming, you often hear the term backward-compatible thrown
around. Well that's not enough for Microsoft. Rumor has it that the next Xbox will be forward-compatible.No, that does not mean it will be compatible with games that haven't been made yet. Otherwise it'd just be your normal console waiting for games to be developed.
Xbox Evolved reports it this way: Imagine that Gears of War 3 is released on the Xbox 360 (pray that it does). When you play the disc on an Xbox 720 (or whatever its name will be), it will play even better - better graphics, better speed, framerate, maybe even new features.
Reading up on what forward compatibility is, it would mean that Microsoft will prep developers on what to expect with the Xbox 720 before it comes out, allowing them add extra code in their games specifically for that platform, which allows for new features, better graphics and all that. While this code can't be handled by the Xbox 360, it will be fully utilized in the 720.
Basically, forward compatibility in a game is like a built-in patch that allows it to utilize the features of next console even though it isn't out yet.
Further reports on the forward compatibility rumor suggest that Microsoft is still "testing the water" of the 720, so even if the rumor is true, it might be awhile before we can confirm the legitimacy of the rumor.

regardless, this is just like a PC for example, buy a copy of Crysis, play it on your current PC rig at Med-High settings - then later on when you upgrade your CPU and Graphics card you'll be able to play the game at higher settings.

This is still backwards compatibility.....
Why does M$ want to confuse the general public by making it difficult to understand? Oh, that's right. To do something that had already been done before but now they just gave it a new name and the people went crazy.

Like a computer. Say I have CoD4, and can only play it on low-med detail, but then I get a newer faster PC that can play it on high detail. It's the same game essential, but looks different.

maybe two layers of dvd format and 2 layers of high def format

Definition of Forward Compatibility: "To gracefully accept input intended for later versions of a said system. A forward-compatible system is expected to gracefully handle input which is intended for a newer version, by ignoring the unknowns and selecting the known subset of the data that the system is capable of handling."
By the above definition if X720 plays X360 games better that means X720 is backwards compatible with X360 and it is actually X360 which is forwards compliant.
Furthermore, there is no 'advancement' This is a tried and proven concept already well under production by many dvd players.
You are right about one thing though. The public aren't idiots. Except of course the ones that actually believe this is forward compatibility and when they play their X360 game on it it will be a whole new experience. It will not be.
Finally. The public will go crazy. Not now but when X720 or whatever is released. And M$ will use this misleading definition of forward-compatibility as a front to make people buy their next-gen console and those people are the idiots i'm talking about.
No. Buying the next Xbox doesn't make you an idiot. I myself might buy one. But thinking for a second that this is some miracle new technology IS.
