Rumor: New Xbox 360 firmware update to have Parental Timer

Parental controls are probably for the parents - Image 1Here's another rumor courtesy of Kotaku's various sources: Microsoft's next Xbox 360 firmware update might include "Parental Timer". As you would've guessed, this means playing time can be limited by someone with the authority to change the console's settings.

While it sure sounds handy for parents who want to prevent their kids from extended play, we expect dads and moms to use it on their selves once in a while. It's hard to resist "one more turn" or "five more minutes" when playing timeless video games that never seem to end.

No details were attached to this rumor, but the thought of being unable to save after hours of dungeon-crawling in an RPG sounded horrifying to some gamers who came across this rumor. Autosave will absolutely be welcome if this holds true. We'll make sure to keep you posted on any official word or confirmation before the update hits this fall, so watch this space.

» Doesn't matter

It doesn't matter to me. I just won't tell my parents about it. Besides they can't even turn the thing on.

» Strange why Quixand would mention early 360 problem when PS2 had far worse and is still in production

Quixand you seem to have a problem with early 360s we all know there was a problem and it was fixed and even better than that MS has given everybody a 3 year extended warranty.

So why dont you mention the PS2(which is still in production) and which like the 360 was well ahead of the competition but also came with early problems i.e around 5 million DVD drives were faulty and all those PS2s had to be sent back for replacement but it still went on to become a world beater and they also did NOT give the 3 year guarantee as MS have done so just hush..

» Quixand has no games to play so he put up rubbish

Quixand at least their is a huge library of games to play on 360 that is why they want to put some control over it, in the USA alone the 360 sells over 1 million 20 thousand games per week.

As the person above me correctly said early 360 just as early PS2 had problems but both companys were more than happy to replace them

and with a 3 year guarantee the time that runs out the next gen console will be about to launch. .

That sounds like a totally worthless feature, although I can't think of anything else I wish they would add.

» The PS3 harddrive is to small will they also drop the 80 gig

I was wondering if Sony are going to have to release a 120 gig PS3 to keep up as it looks like the devs will be using the harddrives as they do on the PC soon i.e install most on the harddrive and just use 1 disc for protection checks etc, (which will also make big storage dvd drives pointless) the Devs are not interested in what 3rd party hard drive you can add on only official releases.

The time my guarantee runs out on my loverly new Euro 360 120gig HDMI Elite( What a machine and under £300 its amazing) MS will release their next gen of monster consoles and Nintendo with its huge profits is proberly looking to release something special around the same time to.

Still at least you will have MGS4 by then but I expect it may look a little dated.

» Noobs

Why would you want an 80-120GB when you can have 250+GB? Yes, that can only be done on the PS3 noob. You can't swap in your own HDD w/ the XBlowx711, so your loss there.

MGS4 may look dated, but it'll still be revolutionary.

LMAO...and still I say, Sony made money off faulty hardware while M$ ended up shelling $1.3 billion dollars due to the RED RING OF DEATH. Sad, sad. Sad the PS2 still outsells the XBlowx711.

PARENTAL TIMER FTW. It's as if parents would know about it. Is M$ going to launch a campaign to make sure parents know about the feature? Maybe commercials? News papers? NOPE. Do parents even know how to operate the damn console? NOPE. And why are you complaining about RPGs? You act as if XBlowx711 players even know of such a thing. All they know is FPS because it's their holy grail of gaming! LMAO! Now....the parental timer would be useful.
