Rumor: Microsoft has planned Blu-ray Xbox 360 for May? - Image 1News has been circulating that the companies have begun or have made plans of dumping the HD DVD format for the Blu-ray format. Now, there's a rumor that Microsoft will be leaving the HD DVD also and will releasing the Blu-ray Xbox 360 in May.

Insiders from the company that Microsoft has already put together a standalone Blu-ray player that can be used with the console. It is currently under internal marketing and sales approvals which could be on sale within three months.

In addition to this, they also said that they've been working on a built-in Blu-ray player for the console.

With this rumored move, Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment, commented that:

We would welcome Microsoft to the Blu-ray stable. In fact it is quite logical for them as the PS3 has been very successful in driving consumers to Blu-ray. In fact we believe that it has done more to win the format war than traditional Blu-ray player.

Juicy, juicy, juicy! Well, there's still no official word on this subject. Better keep your eyes glued to our site as we will be posting more updates on this.

» i hope they do

If they did this it would prevent me and a lot of other people from wasting our money on a ps3 just for the blueray player.

Wouldnt MS have to pay Sony for this though?

» sony does NOT own bluray..

"The "Blu-ray Disc Founder" was founded in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Matsu*****a, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by NP Infotech, on February 19th 2002 the companies announced [2] that they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" on May 18, 2004 to allow more companies to join their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. As of December 2007, there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association."

Even microsoft owns one of the codecs used so right now Sony is paying microsoft for every disc sold...

» yes

Sony will make money on every blu-ray drive and blu-ray disk sold.

by Chaosblack1991 - 2008-02-18 06:58
» that blows

Wow that would really suck because i just purchased an arcade system 1 month ago from game stop what then like there hd-dvd player pay like 300 just to get it i want it internally well at least this will stop piracy for a while

» decling ps3

i have been an advid video gamer, but if the xbox reall turn blu-ray that means the ps3 really wont have the format advantage it once did and the xbox would seem like the better choice unless bestselling games go exclusive on the ps3 other than that, sony cannot allow this to happen bc then their sales will drop dramatically

by na2rul - 2008-02-18 23:58
» yeh i see ur point

but doesnt that mean its going to increase the price of the already overpriced Xbox to er.......even higher price - higher price tag than the ps3?

by xche78x - 2008-02-19 00:10
» crap.... holy

it will save you from wasting money on buying a ps3 but it will not save you on buying a 250 dollar drive add-on for your xbox 360 and or money on buying a new xbox 360 with bluray drive built in.

as for microsoft, good for your business but i think your fanbase will be shocked. as a proud playstation 3 owner, i applaud microsoft for thinking about whats better for your console but i think you should fix the rrod problems first before venturing on another water.

by xche78x - 2008-02-19 00:17
» omg

who pwns who?

sony? pwnd?

i believe dvd-dl will not ever compare to bluray 25gb-50gb discs.

» I'm just glad I didn't get an Xbox 360....

As a PS3 owner this makes me even more happier to own one and not a 360.... I could give you 10 reasons why I think PS3 is better than an Xbox 360 ATM, but I won't because I don't want to annoy anyone with my first post and one of the other reasons is in the above article....

Just another thing I'd like to say.... if any 360 owners are possibly considering getting the new Bluray enabled 360... If it ever happens.... DONT!!! Sell your 360 or smash it, sell all the games or smash them, either works fine, Buy a PS3 and then you've got an awesome media hub with a dvd/bluray player BUILT-IN with many great titles comming out soon...

» Built in bluray..

I doubt it, Sony will not allow such a thing, it may hurt PS3 sales, no, I believe they will draw the line there.

But then, why will MS want the hi def format when they are focusing on DD.

by Lifeline - 2008-02-19 11:33
» In fact

It was both Sony and Pioneer that created blu ray before the BDA was founded.

by theaceoffire - 2008-02-19 14:03
» *sigh*

No. Blu-Ray is owned by a group, not Sony.

by Stealth! - 2008-02-19 20:02
» Actually your wrong....

Sony doesn't own the full rights to blu-ray(a small piece, actually) nor are they the creators for it. So they MS wouldn't be paying for royalties, im a PS3 fan and know this.

by Stealth! - 2008-02-19 20:12
» Jesus christ....

People MS will only get this for Movies, ONLY!! Not for games, the PS3 will still have the advantage. If they were to make 460 games Blu-ray standard that would mean every 360 owner would get screwed cause they ended up with the lower quality version xbox.

And as for MS doing this, its not going to help them or the consumers in fact its going to be worse think about it. Lets say out of 15 million 360 owners, 50, 000 actually cares and gets this add on for how ever much the price for it will be. Thats like 3% of the owners, and thats not alot at all. Its actually pretty sad, while there is 9 million PS3 owners who has the blu-ray built in thats pretty dominate, so if you look at the numbers, its not going to be great. Also how many 360 owners got HD-DVD add on? And how many people took a side seat waiting for a winner? Well it may end up being more than 50,000 but if the price is like $300, and with the rest of the add ons thats cost money, be prepared for your system to be $1000, for a 360!!! Its more than the original Price the PS3 60GB was going for. I doubt anyone will buy an add-on that is the same amount for a low end arcade version of a 360.

Trust me the numbers don't lie and its doesn't look pretty. Don't get me wrong, im glad MS embraced the Blu-ray but it doesn't benefit anyone, except PS3 users.

BTW, i feel very sorry for the people who bought an HD-DVD add on, they must really be stupid now.

by thefinalhero - 2008-02-26 02:23
» So...

Will Microsoft still use DVD/DVD-DL as it's video game disk format? And the Blu-Ray player will only be used for movies? So... people actually use the 360 to watch movies? Because it just seems like if you're a gamer and use the 360 for gaming I doubt you'll buy the new system. I seriously doubt that X Box 360 is going to change it's game disk format this late, it's been around for over 2 years now.
