Report: Xbox 360 Readies for Blu-ray - Image 1

Well, well, well. Looks like the saga of the format war isn't over yet. And if this one proves to be true, it would certainly add an interesting new chapter. According to a report, Microsoft is getting ready to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for the Xbox 360.

This report comes after multiple vehement denials from Microsoft that it would ever happen, so it strikes me funny that the rumor still persists. Unless, of course, it's actually true. In which case, it would be terribly ironic, considering how valiantly (and, evidently, futilely) Microsoft fought against the Blu-ray format.

The report goes on to say that it's Toshiba-Samsung who picked up the contract to manufacture the external drives. A price tag of US$ 100 to US$ 150 is being pushed around for the drive.

I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to employ such a tactic to sell more consoles. It will probably work too - after all, one of Sony's main selling points for the PlayStation 3 is that it's also a great Blu-ray player. If the Xbox 360 gets a Blu-ray player, that's one less advantage for Sony.

The source article failed to mention where exactly they got their info, so for now this is tagged as rumor, pending official confirmation from Microsoft.

MAN, Isaac, you really shocked me, I thought it was a fact now. You should add something like a rumor tag to the heading.

Sorry bout that, but the source failed to explicitly mention it was a rumor. In fact, the only line they put in their report that suggests that it might be false was when they said "Microsoft and TSST did not comment on the news-story."

If they got their information from Toshiba or Samsung, the report might be true, but they failed to mention where they got their info as well. I'll revise the article to reflect it.

» M$ is still in denial they don't need Blu-ray

They are in denial that blu-ray is becoming the norm and the future of media format...........

The embarrassing part is they might deny it now, but in the not so distance future, they will have Blu-ray on everything Xbox...........By that time M$will start a new way of denying that they were never against Blu-ray.....blah, blah, blah

» Exactly.

The longer they refuse to use Blu-ray, the more likely they make it that people will pick the PS3 over the 360, since it'll seem like the only console capable of pushing the medium to its limits for years to come.

They've already maxed out the DVD-DL...

Too little, too late!

» I'd buy one @ $150

Would definitely be cheaper than a new PS3.

Plus hacked drivers would eventually come out for it so you could use it on PC/OSX

If it's only a disc drive. Then this wouldn't be a problem. And maybe who knows. Microsoft might start also bringing Blue Ray games as well.

by chessboxer - 2008-10-08 12:56
» no

Games could NEVER be on Blu-ray for the 360 (if they had any intention of using a higher capacity format, they would have used HD DVD). If they sell a console without a mandatory HDD, they won't make games on a disc which requires an external drive.

As far as films go, the 360 can't handle 7.1 audio let alone the latest DTS codecs and the it only supports HDMI 2.0 which supports less than 50% of the bandwidth available in HDMI 1.3a. There are many things which the 360 couldn't do with Blu-ray. This rumour really needs to die.

» M$ didn't choose not to use HD DVD

the problem was they couldn't get their games to run on HD DVD like how the PS3 uses uses Blu-ray to run games........So M$ was force to use primitive DVDs as that was the only thing they knew how to work with.......The PS3 was suppose to come out before the Xbox360 but they were delay back a year because they had problems trying to get the BD to run properly with games............M$ never invested the money or time into HD DVD to work with their gaming system..........they can't even make a machine that isn't known to break down.........don't expect them to magically over night get games to run off of HD DVD.

» RE: Chessboxer

I've read the source...

"The main reason why Microsoft is unenthusiastic regarding Blu-ray is mandatory support of BD-Java interactive technology and Sony%u2019s reluctance to adopt competing tech called HDi that was developed by Microsoft. Even though Microsoft managed to push its VC-1 codec onto both Blu-ray and HD DVD markets, the company%u2019s negative attitude towards Java prevented it from supporting the former standard in general. As a result, the company used to sell external HD DVD drive for Xbox 360."

» HD DVD

HD DVD is dead....production died off in spring, last movies were PS I love You, W/E in June.

Why are you guys talking about HD DVD?

Microsoft will never make a machine with Blu Rays...Exclusive Blu Rays......360 couldn't handle a Blu Ray drive..

Let's drop this nonsense.....let's talk about The PlayBoxStation X. The controllers are almost identical. Sony has good hardware and Blu Ray, Microsoft has good software and game developers..MONEY BABY...Plus we would all be friends again, like back in the nes days, before sega.

Talk about MASSIVE ONLINE PLAY, WITH BADASS TECHNOLOGY.....THINK ABOUT IT

» I agree
