Report: FFXIII's Xbox 360 version only 18GB |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: final fantasy xiii, Square Enix, xbox 360 titles
Ó

The Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will ship on three discs, which gives Square Enix around 25GB or so to play with. That's quite a bit lower than the estimated 38GB the PS3 version uses, but reportedly the game's total size is even smaller on the Xbox 360 side.
Using an overseas review copy, Japanese site GameSpark puts Final Fantasy XIII's Xbox 360 version at a mere 18GB, less than half the size of the one for PS3. The breakdown is as follows:
- Disc 1: 5.9GB
- Disc 2: 5.8GB
- Disc 3: 6.6GB
Square Enix must me using some mad compression to squeeze all those cutscenes into a package that small. Hopefully the quality doesn't suffer too much.
Thanks to Jim Hunting for the tip!

Xbox360 uses DVD.
PS3 uses Blu-ray.
Point 2:
DLC, more money same stuff.
Reply
They're not being "professional" they are just being cheap, SE is using the single-sided double-layer DVD if they use anything higher then they loose money for using more expensive equipment. There's 4 types of DVD's 4.7GB DVD, 8.5GB DVD, 9.4GB DVD, and 17.08GB DVD, but the last two are more expensive then a blu-ray alone.
Reply
The 360 only uses standard 8.5gb DL Discs, they are not being "cheap". The only reason they are developing it for 360 is because of a larger user base. It's called business, not being cheap.

Xbox 360 won't sell good enough, but I don't think SE cares about that much, since they already got their cheque form Microsoft. If they kept it exclusive, it would have sold way more on PS3 than Xbox 360 and current PS3 sales combined, just because they could have used all the time to actually "finish" the PS3 version. But they don't care about that, since lost sales can be cleared with the money from MS, right?
The X360 version of FF13 was merely a "Not being exlcusive to PS3" and not "coming to both platforms".

Shitty compression because they are lazy I can forgive (Since they so underused the disc, looks like they didn't play around with it too much.) but a hit to performance would be inexcusable.
Reply
i dont know about that. being lazy is just lame and a disrespect to consumers because, to be quite honest, ps3 and xbox games pretty much tied in terms of visuals (at the moment) and to think other developers have made such good looking games, they should be ashamed that they don't measure up. what's worse is that SE kept saying it would "identical" to the ps3 version. if i was microsoft, i'd be pissed. if i owned a xbox, i'd be pissed.
with all that said, graphics really do play second fiddle. hopefully their laziness does not affect gameplay and performance; that i do agree with.

That being said, I also blame the Developers like Square for having long falls from grace, and trying to make a quick buck... or in XIII's case, not so quick. The problem is, everyone (including me) still buys these sellout games which then gives these sellout companies the idea that what they are doing is ok. Yes, I will still be buying XIII, yes It will probably be good, at least in the top 50% of what's released anymore. But if this is what we're letting Square get away with this time... Just imagine what they'll do next time.
Sorry, End Rant.

Even if the real time graphics are Exactly the same, just the fact that cut scenes are not compressed makes it better on PS3, and not changing discs.
I am really just interested if any of the real time graphics are different....not that it makes a difference, just out of curiosity.
Reply
As it is, some video is CGI, the rest of the cutscenes are rendered using the game engine and saved to video. Meaning for all cutscenes, the PS3 version is of a much higher resolution and with uncompressed audio. Hence unquestionably superior.
Therefore I'm curious to find out how the actual ingame graphics of the 360 and PS3 versions compare (some will say it's 576p on the 360 version, but that's based upon screenshots of questionable quality).
I guess we'll know for sure in a week or so.

The other popular claim was that the 360 massively delayed the game, where some even claimed FFXIII would have been released a year earlier had it not been for the 360 (looks at someone here :-)). Recently, SE confirmed that FFXIII wasn't originally designed for the PS3, it was originally a PS2 game (hence was multidisk from the start), and it was late in the development that they stopped work on the PS2 version and moved the game to the PS3, putting it back by 18 months.
I know, it doesn't really matter now, but I just thought I'd mention it after so much nonsense had been said about FFXIII over the last year or so.

PS3 pre rendered cutscenes resolution - 1080P.
Xbox 360 pre rendered cutscenes - 576P(blurry on Xbox 360).
PS3 gameplay and in game cutscene resolution - real proper 720P.
Xbox 360 gameplay and in game cutscenes - sub 720P. Xbox 360 version is upscaled from 576P to 720P so it looks blurry.
In the end the Xbox 360 version looks really blurry.
PS3 load ties with no intall - 6.3 seconds.
Xbox 360 load time with no install - 8 seconds.
PS3 frame rate - 30 FPS.
Xbox 360 frame rate - 29 FPS.
PS3 has better performance and graphics in all ways.
Number of discs on PS3 - 1 which is 32 GB.
Number of discs on Xbox 360 - 3 discs which are 18 GB all together.
Some parts of the game are also removed on the Xbox 360 version.
PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII is far superior than Xbox 360 version.
