The Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will ship on three discs, which gives Square Enix around 25GB or so to play with. That's quite a bit lower than the estimated 38GB the PS3 version uses, but reportedly the game's total size is even smaller on the Xbox 360 side.

Using an overseas review copy, Japanese site GameSpark puts Final Fantasy XIII's Xbox 360 version at a mere 18GB, less than half the size of the one for PS3. The breakdown is as follows:

Disc 1: 5.9GB
Disc 2: 5.8GB
Disc 3: 6.6GB
  • Disc 1: 5.9GB
  • Disc 2: 5.8GB
  • Disc 3: 6.6GB

Square Enix must me using some mad compression to squeeze all those cutscenes into a package that small. Hopefully the quality doesn't suffer too much.

Thanks to Jim Hunting for the tip!

Having both consoles, I'll take the lean mean 360 version. I'd rather have lower texture resolutions at a smoother frame rate. PS3 will have longer load times and dips in framerate because it's loading larger textures sounds and videos. The minuscule improvement in visuals isn't worth the stress.

Ur obviously a Xbox owner and personally, just the fact that loading time will be twice as short on the PS3 makes it better both systems have their own advantages like how xbox has horrible hardware, or at least compared to PS3, and PS3 has almost none of the Games I want, like Halo Reach. But i really could never see myself playing FF anything on a Xbox it just doesn't feel right. Games that epic like FFXIII needs PS3 graphics, its 8 Cores to run it at a good speed, and the six axis controller, which im wondering how they'll incorporate into the game

If you are a 360 owner and have both consoles, you know which one to buy it for.

What is the reason of compressing the game that much? I mean.. They have 25 gb to play with but they choose to cut it down to 18gb.. They are a very proffessional company wich doesnt only care about the graphics so maybe they do this to assure stable and fast gameplay for the 360. Thats typical for Square Enix. To put playability in first place.

Point 1:
Xbox360 uses DVD.
PS3 uses Blu-ray.

Point 2:
DLC, more money same stuff.

They're not being "professional" they are just being cheap, SE is using the single-sided double-layer DVD if they use anything higher then they loose money for using more expensive equipment. There's 4 types of DVD's 4.7GB DVD, 8.5GB DVD, 9.4GB DVD, and 17.08GB DVD, but the last two are more expensive then a blu-ray alone.

The 360 only uses standard 8.5gb DL Discs, they are not being "cheap". The only reason they are developing it for 360 is because of a larger user base. It's called business, not being cheap.

If they would really care about bringing the game to 360 owners, they wouldn't have done such a piss-poor job with it.
Xbox 360 won't sell good enough, but I don't think SE cares about that much, since they already got their cheque form Microsoft. If they kept it exclusive, it would have sold way more on PS3 than Xbox 360 and current PS3 sales combined, just because they could have used all the time to actually "finish" the PS3 version. But they don't care about that, since lost sales can be cleared with the money from MS, right?

The X360 version of FF13 was merely a "Not being exlcusive to PS3" and not "coming to both platforms".

with 3 discs will it be a 60$ price cause if were paying 60 $ for 3 discs then why are we paying 60 for only 1 disc?

Because it's the same game, blu-ray can hold more. The three discs on xbox is a BAD thing, not a good thing, it's not like they're getting extra content or anything.

As long as it performs okay. If there is slowdown and crap, I'll start caring then.

Shitty compression because they are lazy I can forgive (Since they so underused the disc, looks like they didn't play around with it too much.) but a hit to performance would be inexcusable.

i dont know about that. being lazy is just lame and a disrespect to consumers because, to be quite honest, ps3 and xbox games pretty much tied in terms of visuals (at the moment) and to think other developers have made such good looking games, they should be ashamed that they don't measure up. what's worse is that SE kept saying it would "identical" to the ps3 version. if i was microsoft, i'd be pissed. if i owned a xbox, i'd be pissed.

with all that said, graphics really do play second fiddle. hopefully their laziness does not affect gameplay and performance; that i do agree with.

I remember reading a report that they used an entire layer (25gb) on the blu-ray for just vids and audio on the PS3 side. The fact that they jammed all of that and then the game into 18gb of dvd is insane.

idk if someone got there facts mixed up somewhere but this site is saying that the 18.3Gb is just the size of the optional HD install for the Xbox. Not the size of the entire game..

but if you recall many 360 games that have 7+GB installs the actual game is much smaller but they use padding to fill the disc

its because they want both versions of the game to come out on the same time if there were to do that it would just push the release date back more

This is still ridiculous. I don't care how much it was compressed or how much the Cutscenes and sound suffer on the 360 version. They still get the Same entity, which is like Square Saying, Hey, here's something to let you know, we appreciate 360 users being just as cheap as we are. Take an FF that is More linear and still just as cheesy of a story line, while we'll take a big paycheck from MS. It's like encouraging people to be cheap asses, which most of the time is fine, but in the Video game industry, the more cheap games are bought, the less High quality ones are made. I mean why make a Good game when people go nuts over an average Game? I mean Fable? Sure, nice idea... but plagued by glitches and freezing. Halo? Has been the Same game since it started, and there hasn't been an improvement since 2. Gears of War was the Same. Gears 2 felt more like 1.5. The thing is, People continue to support the 360 for having 'high quality' games. It's not meant to have epic games people, it's meant to score MS a lead in the Next Generation's profit by taking cheap ass consumers who don't care for quality games away from quality producers. All I'm saying is, the 360 is just fine for being an inexpensive let off for people who are either strapped for cash, cheap, or think piracy helps the industry, but that's it. Stop telling Producers that the Xbox has as much power for a quality game as PS3 when it doesn't, you're hurting people who actually Like GOOD games.

That being said, I also blame the Developers like Square for having long falls from grace, and trying to make a quick buck... or in XIII's case, not so quick. The problem is, everyone (including me) still buys these sellout games which then gives these sellout companies the idea that what they are doing is ok. Yes, I will still be buying XIII, yes It will probably be good, at least in the top 50% of what's released anymore. But if this is what we're letting Square get away with this time... Just imagine what they'll do next time.

Sorry, End Rant.

I wonder what will happen in a few years ... they discovered how to make 20 layers Blu Ray Discs (Pioneer discovered it exactly), if Sony uses that technology with the PS3 in games that require that space (not now, but in the future) that would be the equivalent of 56 DVD9s approximatly xD

everyone know it will be better on PS3.

Even if the real time graphics are Exactly the same, just the fact that cut scenes are not compressed makes it better on PS3, and not changing discs.

I am really just interested if any of the real time graphics are different....not that it makes a difference, just out of curiosity.

I'd like to see how the real time graphics compared too. My only disappointment was that when SE said they designed the engine to create ingame cutscenes, I assumed they meant *realtime* ingame cutscenes. This would have meant the 360 and PS3 version would be similar except for CGI footage.

As it is, some video is CGI, the rest of the cutscenes are rendered using the game engine and saved to video. Meaning for all cutscenes, the PS3 version is of a much higher resolution and with uncompressed audio. Hence unquestionably superior.

Therefore I'm curious to find out how the actual ingame graphics of the 360 and PS3 versions compare (some will say it's 576p on the 360 version, but that's based upon screenshots of questionable quality).

I guess we'll know for sure in a week or so. :-)

I seem to recall many gamers (some of them here) ranting and raving like lunatics for over a year claiming the 360 version *MUST* mean the PS3's version (especially the graphics) will be downgraded, and yet more and more we can see this has NOT been the case. As I used to maintain, if any version would see a compromise, it would be the 360 version, not the PS3 version, and I was right!. Anyway, it's not surprising that the 360 version is half the size when around 32GB of the PS3 version is video alone! The game itself is only around 7GB.

The other popular claim was that the 360 massively delayed the game, where some even claimed FFXIII would have been released a year earlier had it not been for the 360 (looks at someone here :-)). Recently, SE confirmed that FFXIII wasn't originally designed for the PS3, it was originally a PS2 game (hence was multidisk from the start), and it was late in the development that they stopped work on the PS2 version and moved the game to the PS3, putting it back by 18 months.

I know, it doesn't really matter now, but I just thought I'd mention it after so much nonsense had been said about FFXIII over the last year or so. :-)

PS3 version is superior in all ways!

PS3 pre rendered cutscenes resolution - 1080P.

Xbox 360 pre rendered cutscenes - 576P(blurry on Xbox 360).

PS3 gameplay and in game cutscene resolution - real proper 720P.

Xbox 360 gameplay and in game cutscenes - sub 720P. Xbox 360 version is upscaled from 576P to 720P so it looks blurry.

In the end the Xbox 360 version looks really blurry.

PS3 load ties with no intall - 6.3 seconds.

Xbox 360 load time with no install - 8 seconds.

PS3 frame rate - 30 FPS.

Xbox 360 frame rate - 29 FPS.

PS3 has better performance and graphics in all ways.

Number of discs on PS3 - 1 which is 32 GB.

Number of discs on Xbox 360 - 3 discs which are 18 GB all together.

Some parts of the game are also removed on the Xbox 360 version.

PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII is far superior than Xbox 360 version.
