There have been enough commentaries on Xbox 360 failure rates, and Microsoft customer service responses, that we would have just passed on this. Still, there's Peter Moore's recent interview with The Mercury News' Mike Antonucci, and Moore's response to a reader question regarding hardware failures might be instructive in looking at Corporate HQ's attitude to the issue.Q (from reader): IÂ’d like a straight answer on issues with hardware quality (have suffered through 2 defective 360Â’s in a 7 month span and am about to call it quits with this system). MS claims an 'accceptable' 3% failure rate but I imagine the actual number to be much higher - perhaps 2x or 3x more?
A: I canÂ’t comment on failure rates, because itÂ’s just not something - itÂ’s a moving target. What this consumer should worry about is the way that weÂ’ve treated him. YÂ’know, things break, and if weÂ’ve treated him well and fixed his problem, thatÂ’s something that weÂ’re focused on right now. IÂ’m not going to comment on individual failure rates because IÂ’m shipping in 36 countries and itÂ’s a complex business.
The best, non-judgmental interpretation we can get from this response is that it is Microsoft's policy and attitude to deal with cases of malfunctioning Xbox 360s on an individual basis - and thus cannot give an encompassing answer to the issue - or treat it in such an encompassing manner. Now it is unarguable that Customer Service is/should be dedicated to the full satisfaction of each disgruntled consumer.
Still, we couldn't blame critics who will - and have - focused on Moore calling the failure rate a "moving target." Looking to the individual responses to individual issues, and the results from them, might really smack of redirecting in light of that.
Sensationalist? Maybe - but people still keep asking the question.

My consol Has a 2005 manufactureing date And they are fixing it for free. And giveing me a one year warenty on the repair.
It took a While for the prepaid shiping box to get here. But once it did, It took 3 days for shiping. And yesterday they receved my 360, Fixed it. And shiped it out this mornig!! The ups tracking number says the delivery date it the 11th.
I cant complain so far about there service!!

As with any electronic theres a failure rate, but its nowhere near the number Sony fanboys would have you believe. I have a launch console and it is still going strong. So are all of my friends consoles as well. Now Ill wait for someone to lie and say theyve had 3plus consoles all break down and all their friends consoles have broken too.

here are articles pertaining to ur reliable XBox... it is not a post from a fanboy but actual reports, not from any fanboy sites or forums but from sources like wikipedia, mercury news, game daily, and so on.... i just took then in random from a huge list of actual accounts on XBox consumers and there are even return figures from retailers... i could post them all here but i guess you get my point... you may not like it but it's true... the 360 fails... it dies.
i don't know about anyone here but i've never had a anything die on me before the 360 is special.... ur's working, good for you... but i'd rather believe actual journalistic report where it covers more of the world than you and ur little network of friends.

Amazon isn't a good place to track sales. And the only reason it's probably ahead of the 360 there is because the Elite is sold out.
We know by the North American NPD figures that the 360 is outselling the PS3 by 2:1. And the Wii is outsell the PS3 by 3:1.
Quixand you don't even own or want a 360. Why would you be concerned with failure rates? If you went out and bought one you would realize that the system works and has a lot better games, services and downloadable content than your $600 protein folder.

all this links are recent quarterly sales report from Australia.. the Wii and PS3 are neck and neck (PS3 short of just 1000 units)... the 360?? nevermind... wouldn't want to disappoint you...

i live in Australia so my PS3 is around USD700+... and i also bought a Sony Bravia just for it so it's actually considerably more than $600.00.

When I bought my lanch consol it came with a 90day warrenty regesterstratio n card. And it is still in warrenty today.

my 360 gave out on sunday i only had it since christmas and i treated it like it was my baby :( 3 weeks to repair a console and the possibility of receiving someone elses console.. if it dies again microsoft will have lost my business for good *bookmarks ebay*
I live in Australia. Sales are good because it only just recently launched. And your talking about less than 2% of the global gaming market. And the 360 is leading the PS3 in market share by 4:1 in Australia.
Quixand, honestly PS3 sales are nothing to brag about. There will probably get better but honestly for a last gen market leader (over 70% market share in the console market) sales are just horrible.
im not making Australia a representative of the whole world... that's why i said this is not Japan nor the US... it is just a place in which stats would be more neutral than what ur spewing about north america which is the strong base of xbox...

It's a moving target and it just keeps getting worse and worse. Therefor, MS will just quote their failure rate at production, which is 3% and the fairure rate right now is propably 25% and climbing!
I'm on my 3rd console, and am about to send it back too. This time I will demand a new one. I had my first one over a year. The 2nd and 3rd (refurbs) broke the day I got them.

Yes i own, 2 360s, i premium, and one Elite. My Premium is connected to my 50 inch Grand Wega SXRD, and the Elite is connected to my XBR3.
So in actuality, i have about 6Gs invested in Sony TVs, vs 900 in MS consoles.
I have 3 360 in my house, (One is my roommates) 2 are launch, with zero issues.
So stop trying to justify your PS3 purchase to all of us. Good for you, enjoy your console, and stop trying to spreak useless FUD.

Really if you think about it, the only people with any right to be mad are people who bought theirs between Nov. 22 2005- May 6 2006 who have not had their consoles fixed under warranty before! I still don't understand what your trying to prove here. The PS3 is doing quite well for being five months old. When I had a 360 in January '06 I only had one game for it (I was waiting for GeOW and F.E.A.R.). I now have one game for my PS3 as of January (again, I am waiting for Lair and Heavenly Sword). So does that make my experience any different on the PS3? No. Both the 360 and now the PS3 are able to hold my interest with online content until good games come out. As far as exclusives go I think it's fine for Konami and Capcom to expand to all consoles the more players the better :). As long as there are still first party exclusives on both sides it doesn't bother me.

Im so tired of people calling it BS when something negative happens with the xbox. Shut the **** up and except it. My x360 hasn't had any problems braking down but I wouldnt call others braking down BS cause theres so many reports on it. On another note Microsoft should really consider changing their assembly methods or something. Its very cheap and may be the problem to many consoles breaking down
who cares? the units are being replaced, it's not like they are leaving their customers to drown. from what i remember when i sent mine in, it was gone for maybe a week, then back and ready to roll. if my ps3 broke and sony replaced it, what would be the big deal? i wouldn't abandon it and just give up.

sales and the 1 year head start is a moving target too. moore should be made into a moving target too. sonys price point is a great moving target for microsoft, but microsoft seems to ignore their own giant overpricing. $100 for a wifi card, $180 for a 120gig hard drive and $200 for a hddvd drive, then with those $480 of addons to a $300 360 make it as capable as the ps3....but for 300+ more. the 360 was the first console to ever break on me, broke in 5 months, i bought a launch ps2 and psp and they still work. I got my xbox 360 just under an month ago, an no word of a lie it broke, just stopped reading disks from out of the blue, i heard about the "rings of death" and well to tell you the truth i didn't need any more proof that MS just slapped peaces of hardware together and hoped for the best.
i do in fact own a ps2 and will 100% be buying a ps3, I want something that is up to date and not slapped together lol

And how do you explain the all the articles on the major gaming sites about 'red ring of death' I never saw anything similar that with the original Xbox. Some of them telling stories of how all their xbox360's died. Don't tell me theres not a connection between those articles and peoples stories on forums about how their up to the 3rd xbox360 with so many people(every time)replying that they too have problems, and people from stores that say they have had like half of them returned to them for repairs./

listen, im a gamer first, fanboy second. im a nintendo fanboy but the nintendo makes system for pssy carriers and old people now and told me to f myself and those people wont even buy more than 4 games. anyway, my xbl and psn screen name is "dylantalon" so anyone one of you guys can add me cause im a fan of all systems. i love the xbox 360 but i have three sitting in my room and also i have 3 xbox 1 sitting in my room also, they are all broken. remember now, i love the xbox but fanboyism isnt going to get me a new system and im not going to buy another xbox unless its an elite and im hoping it doesnt break until at least a year or so. im telli8ng the truth, i play, oblivion, prey, test drive unlimited,forza 1, nfs carbon and mostly gears of war which is my fav but i cant play it til atleast saturday when ill buy the elite. i love my ps3 also , i love resistance but i hate entering rooms where people play with sho9t guns only and one shot kills, i love the plane resistance with health regeneration.
by the end of october there wont be any good games to buy for the 360. a lot of people say the ps3 has no games but other than gears of war i didnt really enjoy any games for the 360 for more than 4 hrs. 360 has a lot of crappy games but i still love the system. oh yeah, lost planet was really good but it had a lot of slow downs and got boring after a couple hrs. motorstorm for the ps3 is a really good game which i play a lot, resistance is great, i love ps3 oblivion way better than the 360s cause it runs and looks better. the ps3 to me will be # 1 console at the end of this year. reasons- lair,heavenly sword, killzone ps3,uncharted drakes fortune,mgs4,wh ite knight,ninja gaiden,ps3 home and more. all those games i mention are exclusive titles which i must have which has graphics and technology not capable on the 360 which i love also. i have a wii too but only 2 games which are zelda and redsteel which isnt too bad if given a chance . i like zelda a lot but wish they had voice overs instead of text.
The 360 is a cheap piece of crap. And yes I own one. I haven't had to replace mine and I've had it since launch. So what's my problem? Crashes, slowdowns, and crashes. Newer games released with glitches that crash the system or don't save or corrupt your hard drive. I could care if these were crap games but Oblivion, MLB, Crackdown, and many others.
This type of performance would destroy a piece of hardware in more "mature" markets, but gamers are suckers who with a little ra ra speech are all forgiving and apoloigists for the lack of commitment from a hardware manufacturer.
Do you losers think the Ipod would be as popular with this type of performance? How about the latest Intel Core Duo 2 or the latest Ferrari? For what you pay for a console and what it provides, the price is far from reflective of what you're getting. Yet, all these posts answer an obvious fact with attacks of fanboyism by ps3 fanboys.
I could understand if you were arguing over types of games available or Xbox Live, but anyone who argues against the 360 being a cheaply made system needs a reality check.
So if it broke a month after you got it you could send it in and get the same one back fixed right? One or two weeks without a console and you get it back with a new one year warranty. What's the problem?

im an unbiased gamer who just loves video games, i have games dating back from the nintendo 85 era. i had my first game a nes game back in 1994 and i loved it. i got a super nes in 1995 and i loved it more than the sega which i got a short time after. in 1996 i remember being at my cousins house and his neighbor brought over this grey machine, hooked it up to the tv and put a cd inside. when the picture came up on the screen, i couldnt believe what i was seeing, it was ridge racer. it was a playstation and it was technologically way better than my super nes. that fcoked me up cause donkey kong country wasnt so pretty anymore. i had dreams about owning a ps1 but got it like 6 months later. i loved it. i got a n64 in 97 and loved it also, golden eye 007, hours, months years of fun. my point is this, all these systems i mentioned i still have, they all work fine no problems. ok i blow into my nes cartridges to get them going but the systems are fine. ive never had a broken system til the first xbox, i have them.

the ps3 is a good system and will be the # 1 console to have again. reasons i say that is cause i have all the next gen systems and the next gen poser ones and i can see the xbox 360s limits when im playing a game like lost planet. when fighting certain bosses in lost planet the xbox 360 starts lagging. when im on gears of war online and a grenade is thrown and two a or more guys are shooting,it lags. in a game like perfect dark zero, on the level where you ride the hover craft it lags like crazy. the wiis graphics are for idiots.i still like the wii but ill own not more than 6 games through its life cycle. blu ray is wicked, capable of 50gb. i love that, and i cant wait for killzone ps3 , and all the games that shows what a next gen game should look like.
Would you acre if yours broke down after three months and they will replace it with someone elses console that they repaired? That's whats happening to me... They dont say that its used, but they do say "we can't call them new, because they are not in the original packaging..." Scary...
I love my box 360. The games, GRAW2, GeOW, Forza 2 (just to name a few) are alot of fun. But after 3 months, my xbox 360 broke. I wouldnt be complaining if the warranty replaced it with a new 360, but when MS CS tells me that I will be getting a refurbished one, my heart sank.
I have had many consoles in my day too. Oldest being the Colecovision. Have played with the intellivision too at a neighbours. I've had NES, SNES, PS1 and the PS2. None of them have broken down on me. (I just gave away my PS1 to this new kid in town) I just wish the xbox 360 was just as reliable.
