Red-ringed Xbox 360 outside warranty, repaired for free

Look at the face of death - Image 1Xbox 360 owners fear it, gamers with units outside warranty period wet their pants when they see it, even Microsoft dares not speak of it - the "red ring of death" is one of this generation's greatest enemies. This is not always the case, however, since Richard Manley from GWN overcame this hurdle.

Having bought his console during the Australian launch, Manley's machine was three months past its warranty when the ring of death phenomenon occurred. He instantly called customer support, and found out that he'll have to spend AU$ 200 to get his unit fixed. Dismayed, all he could reply was "'I'll need to have a think about it."

Alternative methods were useless to avoid the hefty price, so he decided to call in again. Surprising enough, it seemed like it was the same person as before on the other end of the line; but things were different. The rep checked the last call's info with the reference number, and figured out that Manley's 360 was on its way to get fixed:

I gave her my call reference number from the previous call, and she then informed me that "it looked like I was getting the console repaired under warranty". "Is that correct?", she asked. I was a little stunned. I replied, "Umm, yeh, ok." The woman said I would receive instruction in my email inbox later that day informing me how to package up the console and where to send it.

The instructional email came in and he sent his 360 out the next day. A week later, the unit came back fixed free of charge. Moral lesson of the story: try to go around customer service - it'll save you some dough.

» WAIT A MINUTE!!!

i thought the red ring of death was just an internet black propaganda to ruin the XBox360???!!!! oh i forgot it's just the Xbots in denial saying that...

refusing to accept the truth that the red ring of death is an industry fact acknowledged by everyone EVEN microsoft who is continuously finding ways of trying to make up for it by customer service efforts...

everyone knows the XBox has problems with it's failure rate it's just the diehard Xbox fans who refuse to acknowledge the problem so microsoft would be obliged to address it the right way!!!! thru production adjustments... but then XBots just choose to cover it up and deny it... why?? so they wouldn't lose on internet console flame wars against PS3 fans.

» .

WTF? diehard fans? Coming from a PS3 fanboy that means nothing. The only thing the internet has done is made the problem bigger then it is. I wouldn't be surprised if most people who say they have a ring of light have a Wii or PS3. Because I know my friends have never had issues once.

And before you say it, I've already told you before I own a PS3, so shove that one up your ass.

» the 360 sucks

i loved the old xbox,, but admit it the 360 sucks

i now own a ps3 too,, and in my opinion it's alot better than the 360,,

am i the only one with an cheap ass plastic case DJ 360??

the plastic case is totally screwed up,, and the DJ 360 screwed up my Saints Row,,

the only thing good on the 360 is, Xbox live

by Quixand - 2007-06-07 12:34
» and as i said

it's an industry fact... and not all the denials in the world is ever gonna change that... hell microsoft know that first hand, that's why they acknowledged it and taking effort and even apologizing for the disk scratching...

no amount of denying changes that... nobody cares about your friends or your classmates, even if their 360s are working it doesn't change the freakin facts!!!! they're not even a pimple on the entire XBox360 user base!!!

by julien - 2007-06-07 12:38
» its true

I had my console replaced three times, each time I get a 90 day boost. But I will probably be out of warranty if there's a next time. I am not gonna pay money to extend warranty, thats just bs, the system shouldn't be crashing. So I will complain and recall until I get it for free. Thats how it should be done :)

» fanboyssss

My 360 died and I had to pay 60 bucks to get it fixed but i'll still not make the switch over to the PS3. The only other system on my radar is the Wii or possibly psp. The ps3 is a joke and you fanboys need to get over it.

by a - 2007-06-07 13:14
» No ps3 isnt a joke pay attention

You neglect to realize past PS3 news. Xbox is soon going to be remembered as that system that almost had the ps3. When hd dvd loses the format war its only going to be the beginning of you xbox fanboys whining and crying......

» I love my elite

i wish the ps3 fanboys could be playing games instead of posting here with retarded comments... i am affraid of the 3 rings though so i make sure that my 360 is ontop of my entertainment center with nothing around it..i have not noticed any disc scratching at all.... if mine dies i better get a free replacement. but i will not buy a ps3.... i think that if they refuse to fix mine ill have to shoot some urine in billy's eye skeet skeet

by Quixand - 2007-06-07 13:40
» it's on

qj.net R Kelly... anyone can see it, you don't need to go to the XBox 360 page.

and what's so retarded about stating the facts??? i speak the truth when i say that's it only the XBots who are trying so hard to deny it... "only PS3tards are this and that and this and that"... open your eyes morons!!! it is happening and no amount of denying could change it.

by darkgeekrocker - 2007-06-07 14:20
» hey look on the bright side...

microsoft can have a new campain..."summer 360 turn around" buy a 360 at gamestop June 11 through the 16 and we will double your warrenty!... i say june 11 because thats when 360 owners will dream...

» @ Quixand

So all the working consoles arent even a pimple on the entire xbox user base? What does that make the people with failure rates? An atom molecule?

For someone who doesnt even own a 360 you sure do like to look like you know what youre talking about. Why do you even care what gets posted about 360? Youre always the first one to open your mouth when it comes to trashtalking 360, so you obviously cant feel too secure in the PS3s future if you have to come here on a daily basis just to let off steam, lies or otherwise.

Why cant you just not comment on 360 related things? You dont own a 360, youre obviously not a supporter since youre so far into fanboyism over sony it isnt even reasonable talking to you, so why not just stay out of business you dont belong in? Is it that hard to stay away? Is the 360 really that big of an opponent to your precious ps3?

Both systems are equal. They both have failures in their bunch, and they both have the same graphic capabilities overall. They both cost the same (just add 200 more to ps3 for the bluray), and all this fighting is completly childish.

People dont come to the boards to watch you show off or to see how amazing you are at bashing pointless crap into the ground. People come here to get news and information, you should try it sometime. But in all seriousness Quixand, you really need to get a life.

Oh, and for your information Im not Aoxx guy. Im Aoxomamoxoa and Im a girl.

» Happened to me

Im out of warranty and called them up after troubleshooting for awhile they asked me for the # on my xbox and told me that a box would be mailed to my door in 3to5 days and after that I would receive a new one 2 days after I sent it to them.

I own a 360 (no ps3 yet) and its died on me once and my repaired one I needs to turn it on twice now to get it going.....

AoxomamoxoA if you look on the rest of the internet you would see the obvious problem, all the posts on forums(you hardly see any posts of PS3/Wii problems), articles on gaming sites(xbox,ps2, GC, Wii,PS3 never had articles on dieing)

own a ps2,xobx,wii,Su per Nintendo and non of them have died on me, there all still going.

by HackMy360 - 2007-06-07 17:56
» no ring of death here

Hummm i've had my 360 since launch day played it everyday ever since and not one problem with it I even went out and bought another one in January 06 and nothing wrong with that one either so I guess I can consider myself lucky huh??

but what I think screws up all these consoles is not that the majority may be faulty but the lack of ventilation as long as its kept cool the 360 is happy make it heat up and well then your in trouble. maybe microsoft can think of a better job of cooling these expensive white boxes. 65nm where are you!!!

by guy - 2007-06-07 18:23
» You're an idiot aren't you?

Alright, so how exactly does the failure of HD-DVD (if it happens, don't say it will because it's pretty obvious you don't have a clue) affect the 360? It doesn't use HD-DVD for games.

On the other hand, one of the main selling points of the PS3 is its movie playing capabilities, but if Blu-Ray fails, which is quite possible, that benefit will no longer exist as movies will stop being manufactured on the BD format. Well, you could watch older movies, but who cares about that?

ATM, PS3 is a joke. A total of two or three good games more than half a year after release is a joke. Multiplatform games for the PS3 that came out months after the 360 version (ie splinter cell, fear) that play and look better on the 360 are a joke. Games that have an online mode on 360 but don't on PS3 are a joke. And things just keep looking better for 360 and worse for PS3 games-wise

I've had no Red Ring of Death but I am on my 2nd 360. It started freezing a fair bit 2 months out of warranty....so knowing the Red Rings were not far away I stuck it to the retailer (not MS) and got a full refund on a 14 month old unit. Got a new console with free game and saved £10...and the newer unit is quieter and runs cooler...so a good result.

I have a PS3 too and that's still going strong 3 months in....probably due to the fact that it's been played for about 2 hours max...there's just nothing on it to take me away from the 360 right now.

» Me too!

Mine is 4 - 5 months out of warranty and they told me on the phone that it's still covered, perhaps there are certain serial number units that are known to have a problem so they cover them, I can't wait to get a new or fixed unit back =)

Im on my 4th xbox 360 now. The hardware sucks. What can I say. Customer support sucks too. But how could I switch? Everyone I know is on Live and Halo 3 is about to drop? Theyve got me and there is nothing I can do about it (but complain here).

» Lesson Learned

i'm in the uk and purchased my xbox console on the release date in Dec 2005 the ring of death appeared in feb 06 so as usual i called support and was told as i was 1 month out of warrenty i would have to pay the £70 repair bill. With no other option i agreed to pay in the off chance that it would matter i mentioned that i had purchased a third party chrome case for my console only to be told that i would have had to remove the warrenty sticker and they refused point black to fix it. Final result £200 for a new console.

by Cowinacan - 2007-06-08 06:09
» Whoa, same here!

I did the exact same thing, and to my surprise they siad mine was under warranty too! I just got mine back today, Lol.

so ya, im on my 3rd 360 and havent dropped a dollar. if they keep giving me new ones then why should i care if the hardware is problematic. at least the games are still far better on the 360.

who ever said it was just PS3 fanboy's posting about the problem? lol

call me a Wii, Xbox, PS2,SNES, (no PS3)PS3 fanboy if you like. I'm a fan of things that work... .

Once again look on the internet the proof of the 'red ring of death' problem is everywhere.

And all these people talking about serious PS3 problems, please give me more proof than a few individuals that where unlucky enough to have their PS3's break.

» 2 Down, 2 Up

This week wasnt a good week. My system went to the three red lights, looked online at my clan forum and saw video about heating system up under towels. With nothing to loose, I tried it, system back up. My son tells me two days later his system hasnt been working for awhile, but doesnt tell me of the the three red lights, he's 8. Take his system and try the towel trick again, his now works. I dont know how long the fix is, but I'll take it and not have to sell out for 2 more systems.
