It didn't take very long for first reports of the infamous Halo Red Ring of Death (RRoD) to infect the newly released Halo 3 limited edition Xbox 360 consoles. Despite Microsoft's assurances that the new 65nm CPU/GPU (the Falcon chipset) would reduce cases of the RRoD, the image above shows evidence contrary to this statement.
The main problem was said to lie in the overheating of the GPU. There were also speculations that not all of the limited edition consoles had the supposed Falcon chipset. Either way, this does nothing to change the fact that Microsoft's console is still plagued with a host of hardware problems.
This was hardly the first time that reports of the RRoD has spoiled gamers' experience with this next gen console. Hopefully, Microsoft will be able to provide a truly permanent solution to their console's limitations.

Well thats one report, that can't be evidence enough that the new chipset consoles aren't doing there job. This guy could have put it in bad conditions... It's not hard to take care of your console, and its not hard to break it either. A single case cannot be taken seriously.
Anyone can get a 360 to fail by mistreating it. Some MS hater could have wrapped a towel around it, let it overheat, took some pictures, and unleashed a hail of hatin' on the internet. With the warranty, the owner has nothing to lose anyway. Why is it a contest whenever a new XBOX 360 console comes out to post the first 3 red light error photos?
The Halo edition still has the same GPU and redesigned heatsink as other recent models. Only the CPU is the 65nm Falcon chip at the moment, so even the article is wrong.
I must be really lucky to have the old one with the non epoxied, old style heatsink, 360 that lasted over a year before I chose to improve the cooling myself. Yeah it still works great. Oh wait that's not luck, I take care of my consoles.

Said exactly what I wanted to say. One instance of a failed newer 360 doesn't mean anything. Though it sucks to hear about it, it doesn't mean that the new consoles will be plagued with the same problems.
you don't have to go giving out excuses. The halo 3 xbox is not as messed up as the older xboxes but still has its flaws. I know it was not done on purpose because i tried to burn my own 360 (my disk drive got *****ed up and was out of warranty). I tried wrappng a towel but jusk kept getting 2 red lights. After a minute it would just turn on.
I can't believe you wrapped it in a towel. The uy that came up with that fix needs to be shot. There is better do it yourself fixes and most of them cost less then $5 in parts.

M$ is bad news period. Tell me one good thing about the xbot hardware that didn't blow up on their face and directly denied it to the public.........these xtards never learn their lesson I won't be suprise if the xbot's malfunctions became so bad it grew arms and stabs you with a knife in the middle of the night.
Some of you people crack me up. Oh but he did it on purpose. Give it a rest. The 360 hardware isnt perfect. It still find it pathetic that they still get RROD even with the new chipsets and everything. I would have rather had a bigger console with better cooling than one thats smaller with crappy cooling. Mine overheats a lot. Funny thing is after it freezes once I can play it for hours after I boot it back up. MS is still a bunch of newbs. How do they not know how to fix the overheating issues??? They better not have problems like this with there next console or I wont buy one.
I think he was trying for 3 red lights to get the disc drive fixed by MS. I guess it was over one year old. I don't know if they would even fix that or not. You can buy a whole new DVD drive for the 360 for like $50, or a laser for even cheaper (if that's the problem.) The drive's firmware is keyed to the console, so you would probably need to swap out the DVD drive board if you don't know how to re-key the drive but other than that should be an easy fix.
I'm not making excuses, there really are people out there that purposely want photos of failed 360s to post on the net. Not saying it can't happen, but it's likely.

as long as the new 360 drop to a faliure rate of below 10% we should all be happy. We still have warranty so whats the problem? And to those trying to make the new 360s break, you should get slapped for wasting 400 dollars.
I brought this limited edition xbox. I'll let you kno how it gets on after treating it as NORMAL as the PS3 like any other regular consumer.(unlike you who goes overboard with the taking care part)
I don't mean to start any bashing(because it's already going on) but I was really looking forward to buying a new 360 because of the HDMI, and coupled with a new chipset, I was just about sold. I just hope they can figure out how to get the GPU to be solid.
Already!? So much for those new heatsinks and chipsets. They obviously aren't doing the job if a console is going to burn out in a week. MS needs to step up and totally re-design the 360, as long as it has the same functionality then I don't see why not?

As if someones going to buy a new halo console just to wrap it in a towel. I'm the same as you though, have had my 360 since day one in Australia and have never had a problem.
I dont care if its 1 console, maybe if all of them failed they'd have a problem, one console that failed should worry anyone. for all we know someone wanted some attention so taped their air vents closed(I'm not saying they did, but who knows).
One pic of a dead new console should not stop you from buying one if you really want one. That's just being paranoid. If it makes you feel any better, I have had three 360s so far, and no, none of them have been replacements. Two of them I purchased at launch, one I still have and it has never given me a single problem, the other I had up until the Elite came out, again, no problems at all with this unit, I sold it and bought an Elite. The Elite has also not given me a single issue.

I usually don't like to stick up for MS, because I usually don't like what they do or the way they do it, but this is just downright stupidity. "Reduce" does not equal "eliminate", so I fail to see how one pic of one defective 360 even hints that the defect rate has not been reduced despite MS's claims.
So what you are saying is that every broken console is down to the user?

I think you misunderstood me. Mr common sense likes to brag to the fact that he has never had a problem with his 360. Good for him I say, if it wasn't for the fact that he assumes that all other failures are down to users, and I quote "Yeah it still works great. Oh wait that's not luck, I take care of my consoles." He has posted to that affect many times. Personally I can't wait for his 360 to go bye bye the smug git.
It looks a lot like the manufacture date says 2007 - 8 - 18 (or 16) to me.
if that's the case then this console DOES NOT have the falcon CPU.
Falcon CPU's are only present on consoles manufactured on or after 2007 - 8 - 24.
Congratulations to the guy that got the RROD this console. You've just proved that the fancy case doesn't disguise this being any old premium console inside.
