Red ring of death just a "mass hysteria"?

Xbox 360's rings of death - Image 1There's an interesting theory on the Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death phenomenon: We all know that Microsoft is dealing with so many console returns, but there's a possibility that some 360 owners just caved in to the Xbox 360 red ring of death "mass hysteria". They immediately turned in their consoles upon seeing the four red lights, contributing to the reported high failure rate of the console.

The problem here - as Kotaku points out - is that those four red lights don't necessarily mean that the Xbox 360 died; it might only mean that the A/V cables are not connected properly. If this is the case, the owner doesn't have to go through the hassle of returning the console to fix that "problem".

For those who aren't aware, you should worry about the three red lights as this indicates a hardware failure, while four red lights mean that cables just need to be checked. So when you see your Xbox 360 getting a perfect circle of four red lights, check the cables first and try to boot up the system again before worrying so much. Why seeing three lights is more serious than seeing four, we really don't know.

Whether this rumor is true or not, it's good practice to check out the manual first before going nuts and calling Tech Support for assistance. Because leafing through a book or checking out Google for help is much easier than being put on hold.

Way to go!

this article is fresh news....too bad i read it last week on xbox scene. but it is possible that some retarded owners didnt realize it was an error for the av cable...anyone who owned an original xbox knows this all too well. If this was really happening they should have kept track of all the consoles coming in for repair that had no defects. then they could have used that to prove the case... but since they havent released that information it looks like they are just passing the blame.

Grow up!

MS trying to get away with saying things aint that bad BS wake up you aint fooling anyone. I have had 4 so far all them with AV cord problems no 3 red lights. Yes MS it is that bad dont deny it.
by - 2007-08-15 07:19:37
actually

The only ring of death i've ever experienced on my 360 was the one regarding the av cable. I had just brought my 360 back from a friends house and did not secure the av cable correctly. When i saw that red ring i freaked out.. then i turned it off and checked all the cables and noticed the av cable was only half way in. ONce i connected it, vwalla! And i've had my console since day one and that is the only red ring i've ever seen on it *crosses fingers*. Not to say that people arent getting that actually ring of death.

...

Im still on my first Xbox 360. I have had it since Feb. 2006, and it has quad-redded on me many of times, but thats because of the av cable. You would think that our own Microsoft tech support would have caught it before the company began loosing millions on a cable that wasnt fully plugged in...When I read this on Kotaku I just sat there and laughed, and laughed, and laughed... The first thing I told my friend when his ringed up was to check the av cable, but his genuinley died.

lulz

Who comes up with this crap? You have to talk to at least 2 techs on the phone before they tell you to pack the shlt up and send it back, making sure you unplug, reset, check all connections etc,.. nevermind that MS pretty much said it WAS a design flaw..
by AoxomamoxoA - 2007-08-15 07:48:14
still on my 1st launch console

Thats why the intercoolers are a bad idea, the ones that plug into the back of the console. They get in the way of the cables and could cause them to make a bad connection to the console, causing it to red ring. The intercoolers are more trouble than theyre worth.

Uhhhh.....

I thought this was something everybody knew. And seriously...if your going to spend at least $300 on a console...take some time to read the manual. It's just amazing how many people don't know the simplest things because the don't read the manual. There are cases where only two of the red lights may show up too. Funny thing though...I remember when one of my friends first got a 360, I unplugged the component cables just to freak him out.
by - 2007-08-15 07:55:02
Still on 1st one

I am on my first one, and it has yet to red ring on me. Many ppl have 360's that over heat because so much dirt gets into the back vent. And they never clean them. It happened to a friend of mine. His Red ringed, he paniced. And i took an aerosol can duster, and so much dust came out of his vents, then the 360 stopped overheating, and it hasnt done so since...
by - 2007-08-15 08:50:01
Can't deny there still are flaws

My 360 works but many have had theirs die, only an idiot wouldn't check his cables and whatnot before sending his console for repairs. Mine does however make insane grinding noises and what sounds like the disc skipping often. That's worrying me.

PS3 frame rate problem

Yer just like the PS3 framerate problems isnt a serious issue to but lets not get into hysteria over it right, because its everyone elses fault devs etc but not a PS3 problem right?..
by - 2007-08-15 10:09:37
keep it cool

I had problems with the *****in red ligts, and when I moved the xbox to a well ventilated area, they went away.
by - 2007-08-15 10:49:27
this is complete crap

because when you call customer service, they run you through a gauntlet to make sure your console is in fact inoperable. To assume people have been sending in xboxs that have only connection problems is ridiculous. This news would have come out months ago if Microsoft had indeed been receiving 360s that were in fine condition.

What frame rate problem!

Frame Rate Problem In Stupid COD3 vs 33% Failure rate? Don't be an ASS!
by - 2007-08-15 11:48:59
that happen to me!!

i was getting the red rings so i sent it in for repairs .....got a new console still have red ring so i go buy a new video plug and it worked..wasted two weeks of play time waiting for another console!!
by - 2007-08-15 11:55:21
Ugh

This is old news. I have known about this since the first week I purchased my xbox 360, back in December of 2005. I freaked out for a moment but quickly checked my cable connections and fixed the problem. I still got the three red lights a year later though.
by - 2007-08-15 11:56:49
Stuff

I had the 3 red rings during a storm after the power went on and off like 4 times within seconds. I turned it off and on and all good. So it's not always something to be concerned about as a long term hardware failure. In my case, the hardware temporarily failed cause of the brownouts. So suck that! Love live the 360! P.S. I'm on my third one..but for disc unreadables.... lol
by - 2007-08-15 12:26:55
none

%33 failure rate with free repairs vs. no games? Dont be a ***** tard
by - 2007-08-15 12:36:23
morons

Still doesn't get away from 360 being crap made!!! Mines now a plastic doorstop because of those little red lights and MS not sorting me out !

Xbox 360 Issues

I've had the grinding problem along with one red light with an error message, fortunately that was my intercooler which I have since removed nor will I get another one. I originally got one because my Oblivion was having trouble, hot system, poor load times, only to find that my Oblivion disc had a a hairline crack in it, almost unnoticable. Since then I replaced the disc it ran fine and cool, without the intercooler, which IMO is a piece of garbage. I just keep my 360 slightly elevated (so air can get in under it) and cleaned regularly with canned air. The intercooler was a good idea, poorly executed, also I think the increased airflow brought more dust than needed into the system. As far as the article, I think a major problem is being too lazy to do research on their problem. Sometimes there are other ways to resolve the problem without voiding your warranty or calling Microsoft, and also, as someone else has stated, I always recommend at least giving your instruction manual a quick read through, sure we all like to plug and play, but let's be smart about this.

Funny thing is..

This happened to one of my friends (he's a little daft though) and he was about to call Customer service when his roommate figured it out for him. Even funnier thing, he's still paranoid about his 360 dying...and barely lets anyone play it now, but before he didn't give a crap......kinda hilarious...
by - 2007-08-15 14:38:40
re

That should be the dvd drive making the grinding noise, mine dose the same thing so don't worry about it.
by - 2007-08-15 17:13:17
...

My friend got the three red rings the first time he turned it on but he turned it off and on and it works fine with no probs. I myself get the three red rings but when i turn it off and back on its fine too.

HAHAHAHA

Nope, not hysteria at all. QJ shouldn't be posting up garbage as the cases are true. Paying $300+ for a crap ass system, M$ shoulda never put the ring on there in the first place. WTF? DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ ON THE INTERNET. There is no such thing as an extened 3 year warranty. M$ pulled a publicity stunt...wow. What a shame. http://www.publicstunts.com/videogames/m$-pulls-upset-no-such-3yr-warranty.html

SONY DVD OF DEATH TRUTH

Well on the subject of machines currently still being sold I think you will find the worst system to date is the PS2 with its DVD of death, millions had DVD problems but in the end it was sorted out just like the newer 360 works just fine you will be sad to know. what will I be playing in the next couple of weeks on my ELite lets see - OOH look Bioshock receives 10 from 10 by just about every review on the planet so I will play some of that a bit of Halo 3 and some Moto Gp 07 What will you be playing on your frame dropping PS3 Lair which received 5 from 10 again frame rate problems or madden more frame rate problems.

THREE YEAR WARRANTY IS NOT A PUBLICITY STUNT

I HAD MY 360 SINCE LAUNCH AND I JUST HAD THE RED RINGS OF DEATH AND THEY ARE FIXING IT FOR NOTHING,YOU ARE JUST A SONY FANBOY,AND IT'S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT SUPPORTS AN COMPANY FROM JAPAN AND NOT THE U.S.it's true what they say, japanese people are smarter then americans because they never did and never will support a product from america even if it's ten times better ,and that's why they are the richest country in the world, they buy from a company that's from japan, unlike the dum a**es from the U.S that pull for a japanese company instead of an american company, and it's people like this is why the U.S is in the shape it's in now, japanese people buy from a company from japan so they could keep their money in their own country and help their economy out, unlike the retards that from the U.S that buy products from japan and send their money over seas to help japans economy out instead of the U.S economy and it just make me sick.let me give the traitors a history lesson, after ww2 patton said that the japan will own the U.S in the furture without starting a war and it's coming true now because people keep buying their products instead of our own and now japan owns about a quarter of the land in the U.S or more now because of it and if we don't do something soon then our great grandkids will be under the rule of japan because they will own ever company and almost all the land in the U.S because meatheads refused to buy american products
