Prey (PC) vs Prey (Xbox 360): You Be the Judge |
Ó
While technology is supposed to make life simpler, it often backfires making life actually more complicated. Take Prey for instance. Typical of a multi-platform title, the question you have to grapple with isn't just to buy or not to buy. But also, do you buy the PC version or Prey for Xbox 360. The question, of course, is valid only if you own a PC and an Xbox 360.
As usual, where there is a dilemma there's some folk who are bound to go find out for themselves. In this case it's the team at Gamespot. They decided to put the two Prey versions to test to see which is the predator and which is the prey. According to the team, PC-based games are traditionally superior to consoles especially for the FPS genre. Mainly because the mouse-and-keyboard standard presents better control than a gamepad plus PC graphics outclass the consoles'.
The arrival of the Xbox 360 is changing all that by giving the PC a run for its money. See what we mean by new technology making things more complicated? To make things less complicated, here are the GameSpot score card for the two species of Prey.
Prey (Xbox 360) The Good:
- Solid performance. Uses the console's addictive achievements system.
- Has Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
- Costs $10 more than the PC version.
- Any user-generated content cannot be used.
- Cheaper retail price.
- Better graphics when played on high-end PCs.
- More potential thanks to additional content via user mods and maps.
- No native support for widescreen resolutions.
- Multiplayer designed to only officially support eight players.

RE: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3503 You can still play the game in widescreen resolutions. Since it is based on the Doom3 engine just follow this link and do the same thing to prey and you can play in ws: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3503
Sorry I pasted the wrong thing in my "RE:" I meant to paste "RE: No native support for widescreen resolutions" :)
I own the PC version and downloaded the Xbox360 version. You dont need a rediculously high end PC to get better resolutions then the Xbox360 and the keyboard and mouse is always a better choice then a controller for this type of game. The 8 Player limit in multiplayer will eventually be hacked and increased just like Doom3 which only could have i think 4.
"The bottomline: Prey PC is great on high-end machines. But the Xbox 360 version is better for gamers who don't want to upgrade their PC." Wow, was this the discovery of the Foundation For Really Obvious Stuff Organization ??? Whats next, an article that concludes: So in retrospect, we found that babies like being fed milk much more than they liked being shot out of cannons.
What is the point of this really? Everyone knows that a high end PC is better than a 360. So why compare? The only thing the 360 has is achievements. The 360 will never beat the PC in any game, especially when Vista comes out. DX10 BABY!!!!
You compare because the 360 is 1/5 the price... so if there is an abundance of games which are just as good if not better than their PC counterparts, the obvious choice for someone just getting into gaming would be a 360. My PC is only decent, and does about 1/4 as good as my 360 in games like Oblivion, so I'm not expecting any more games will run even just as good on it. I also happen to like the controller more than K&M, so I buy all my games for 360 now. And Achievements > all
Like the post above,I cant afford the upgrades anymore, but I wil miss the Mods.A 9.5 from game informer!?!?There are portals...and umm, portals oh and you can walk on ceilings..
on what pc specs will prey look like on the xbox 360 and how does a "high end" pc look like? Some screenshots of 360 and mid - highend pc would be interesting is there any review on the net??
360 owner myself, I would never buy an FPS for it. It doesn't cost a lot of build a system (PC) to play prey at full, the game is pretty much last gen tech when it comes to PC standards. I just did my PC upgrades this year, my other parts lasted me 3 years, some longer. And they now go into the other machines in my house since they are still good enough to play prey on medium or probably still full. They did full with Doom 3. So its also down to the person upgrading the PC, how much knowledge do you actually have? Do you know how to push your components to the max?
I don't think they make enough emphasis on the achievement points on the 360 games. My friend and I both own Oblivion. My version is the 360 one and my friend has it on the pc. After I got the full 1000 gamer points from it I chatted to my friend who said he had got bored and had stopped playing it. I told him he should keep at it because some of the quests are really fun and there's some great storyline twists he hasn't got to yet. Anyway, going back to my point... I think the gamer points you get from the 360 games give you much more of a push to finish games. I have quite alot of FPS's on my pc and still have to complete about a quarter of them!
