Prey Only Takes 5 Hours to Finish?

Prey timeHow long do you need to play a game to make it worth the hard-earned cash it costs you? Considering most Xbox 360 games run about $49 to $59, some folks may say you need to be able to play a game one heck of a long time.

So, where does that leave us with the long-awaited Prey from 3D Realms? Rated-M.com is reporting that it only takes 5 meager hours to solve the single player campaign! So, technically you could be dropping $10 an hour on this puppy!

Watch out... Here be spoilers!

On the left, there's a screenshot that supposedly shows the save from the battle with the final boss clocking in at just over 5 hours.

Others gamers across the internet are saying that 5 hour time is simply not true... It took them less than 5 hours to beat it!

Can any of you confirm or deny this story?

Yup

Its true, its very very short, i passed it in 2 nights. It was a great game, but far too short. Multiplayer really isnt that special too, except that you can walk on walls/ceilings.
by - 2006-07-12 19:00:34
Yep

Took me around 6 hours, but could have been faster if I rushed through it, so that seems right. There's really no sense of urgency or anything since you can't really die in this game.
by - 2006-07-12 19:01:29
short but not really

took me 7 :(

OMG!!

omg, thank god i have not bought it yet, I played the demo and thought it was great. I'll rent or buy when it's waaaaaaay cheaper
by SillyHalfMexican - 2006-07-12 20:07:09
Yep

Yeah, only took me 6 hours to beat it. I let it sit for half an hour without hitting pause on accident. So in reality it was 5.5 hours, but oh well. What can you expect from games today? All the devs do stuff half assed, and rush to get things out there. It's gotten to be kind of normal now, to get 5-6 hours of gameplay out of the SP part. The MP is where my money goes torwards, that's what keeps it alive for me. But yeah, this game should have been atleast 30 or 40 dollars.

uhhh....

I was going to buy this game. Looks like its not going to happen now. Maybe i'll still rent it though.
by - 2006-07-12 20:23:29
OMG!!!

it took me 6 hours to beat and 18 hours to download!!! thats 3 hours of bandwidth per hour to play, and that is completely unacceptable.
by - 2006-07-12 21:13:55
*****ed up

it is kind of *****ed up but at least their is multiplayer. It took me about 4-5 hours to beat Black and that game isnt nearly as fun as this nor does it have multiplayer. These type of games are perfect for rentals, wich only cost $7. Thats a little more than a dollar an hour, not so bad.

Around 6hrs first time...

I'm sure I can cut that down to near 4 now that I know where to go.
by - 2006-07-12 21:26:51
dont complain

they will probably release another chapter and charge you guys 15 usd for that one, what a joke.
by - 2006-07-12 21:48:03

i love this game, although it is short

Personal Opinion

It may just be me, but i think this game is visually stunning, & brilliantly played out, but i think this could be a 3 hour game & i would still walk away happy, it is setting a bar for games now, VERY INNOVATIVE, & just all around fun, just picked it up today & havnt had a hole lot of time to play it but so far, so very good, dunno how it ends so i dunno if its possible to make a 2nd one but wouldnt mind seeing one if it is
by - 2006-07-12 22:22:00
hmmm...

lol this reminds me of fable in a way. "innovative" and extremely upsettingly short
by Vecha - 2006-07-12 22:28:39
wow...

I just *****ing bought this game.... spent 70 bucks on it... got the CE...
by - 2006-07-12 23:49:44
dudes!?!?!

Yeah but then again FLIPPIN TOMB RAIDER TOOK ME 4:38 minutes to complete... i think the waste of money pile is getting bigger
by - 2006-07-13 00:55:35
HAHAHAHAHAHA

this is unbelievable..it got a 9 on ign...9 on everything!!! its its like 5 hrs long!!! along comes Black with about 8 - 10 hrs of play..ign and many other idiots criticise the game for this...and they dont complain at all about prey....probs coz its like the best looking game out so far..reviewers feel the need to give a game a great rating to try an end the drought out there of 360 games
by - 2006-07-13 00:55:45
Well..

I think the length can be deceiving. Considering you can't die in the game and you don't have to save crawl through the game it probably subtracts a good 2 hours from the game. I just beat the game and I think it was a really great single player experience. Though I am quite happy I rented it....
by - 2006-07-13 01:58:16
Black

I completed black in under 4hours. I will play thorugh prey but I won't buy it.
by - 2006-07-13 01:59:38
Really though, short games are FTW now.

Like honestly, I like playing through 5 or so hour games. Like thats perfect for me. It's almost like a cinematic experience, except you get to controll everything. I absolutely loved playing through King Kong, Tomb Raider, Amped, Kameo, Need For Speed Most Wanted, etc., etc., and so on and so forth. Of course, I rented all of those games, so that makes a difference. But still, I freaking love playing through these short games in one or two sittings. The're so much fun and entertaining, and if they were any longer then that would just kill it. It's much more entertaining to play through multiple short games than one long game. (With the exception of GTA series and Oblivion.) I'm looking forward to playing through more short games in the future. Anywho, time to end my rant. -Mdubz *EDIT* Damnit I just realized I'm not signed in... I'll sign in and post below this to confirm it. :P lol

.

something this short should have been a budget title. wtf were they thinking releasing a demo with about 20% single player as the full game.
by - 2006-07-13 03:46:22
What did you expect King Kong???

I dunno if this argument should be so dramatic. Sure, 5 hours (or less) doesn't seem like a very long time, but was GRAW any longer? I passed GRAW on hard mode in less than 8 hours (probably could have finished it faster if I tried...). The point being, unless you're dealing with an RPG or open-ended world, most games will have finite playability. In the end, if the story is good enough, then however long or short a game lasts is irrelevant. Just look at it this way, you at least have multiplayer. Also, if you rent the game, you can probably get a bunch of achievements to up your Gamerscore. LOL
by - 2006-07-13 07:07:35
poor value

I'll wait until longer games come out, probably after there is competition from PS3. Until then I'll be renting from blockbastard video often. I like games that take between 15-30 hours to finish. Final Fantasy and other rpgs (other than elder scrolls 4 oblivion) take too long and get old after a while. Final Fantasy VIII on PS1 took me 80 hours!
by - 2006-07-13 09:21:21
What do you expect from an FPS?

I can't believe people are still whining over this issue on FPS games being short. They have been for years. Take Half-Life 2 for example. Heralded as the greatest FPS the PC has to offer, but only took me about 8hrs to complete. If you're expecting long drawn out storylines with 40 hours of gameplay, then go play an RPG. Think of it this way, do you really want to be wandering around the same general looking corridors shooting the same enemies for 20 hours? Any game that does that and the critics pan it for being "too repetitive and dragging on." And stop saying the developers are lazy. Look at the sheer amount of level design that went into the game. More actual level areas than most RPG's offer. You seem to forget that unlike RPG's you're not delayed an hour or two in every level killing random encounters. You're running through rooms and hallways. The pace of FPS is just entirely different. 5-10 hours to me is a completely standard length of any FPS game. And to sit here *****ing about it not being the length of a final fantasy game then going to ***** about how long games are too monotonous, you're a damned hypocrite.
by - 2006-07-13 09:40:41
Of course...

Yes it is true.I got the game yesterday and litterally within a 4-hour "Or shorter" ammount of time I beat it.Don't get me wrong,I still think this game is completly worth it IMO,but damn....Make the next Prey LARGER & LONGER!
by - 2006-07-13 10:06:32
Hmmmm

A lot of you I'm sure are power gamers, and for the ones with wifes and jobs this game would be perfect since we can rush through it like others. Why does everyone bash the Dev's I would love to see some of you make a game better and longer, I can see a lot of you kids (yes I can tell by the way you type you're no more than 17) drinking your Monster drinks and grinding your teeth while flying through this game and than rushing to the forums whining how short it was.
by - 2006-07-13 10:23:09
waiting games.

this is why you never buy a game just because of the demo, i mean , its an FPs , its hardly going to be massive, this is why games like Oblivion sell, ive had it for over a month now and its STILL truely fantastic, prey is an awesome game yes, but that is only the story mode, the multiplayer is well...very lacking, the walking on walls part is fun but very disorintating in battle. it wasnt so much a great game , just something to entertain me. i found a few similarities to quake 4 in it aswell. but personally i prefer quake. or Halo2 (godbless), FPS on the xbox 360 isnt to impressive at the moment, personally i think that the FPS title can obnly be taken by one game and that is ofcoarse HALO3. but we just have to wait.....its all the waiting game now kids!
by - 2006-07-13 13:48:34
long game

If u guys want a long game play oblivion. To complete everything it can take 100+ hours. Regardless, Prey is a good game.
by SMP222 - 2006-07-13 15:04:56
great story...

but of course to short although it did leave me wanting more
by - 2006-07-31 23:08:35
Short but because of you

I have since the video games wouldn't be considered video games. I have seen this trend in games getting shorter and shorter and I am starting to see the reason. Parents look where your kids are smack right in front of that T.V. and have no sort of intention span. I played the old rpg's that took time if not using cheats but like in todays world everyone wants the biggest and best right now. I am in a small state that has some tournaments that I used to go to and the funny thing is today no one can actually BREATH. 5 hours to todays youth is a long time. And sadly those children will make the future games just as short and boring. How many of you play the old dice role playing games because it takes too long? The market makes the games short because of you and makes them look good just to keep that little part of your brain to keep sparking. I am not saying change your children or anything I am just saying they are playing what the market, which is you, wants and that is short and sweet with no real in depth plot that has twist or turns. They would probably say "Read a stupid BOOK, you know the thing with pages and letters that you get at a library or bookstore."
