Playing Nice: Getting Etiquette Back in the Game World

For the HordeCompetition is great and all, but these days, you might have to admit that there's a lack of sportsmanship in video games. If you've seen those videos on the internet of teenagers swearing at their XBox for winning or losing a game, or that flash animation based on an Onyxia wipe where the raid leader just swore at his entire team, then you probably have a good idea of what's going on.

Over at the 2Old2Play website, Chemterror discusses how he thinks more mature gamers (not necessarily older ones) can be beneficial in stemming the tide of rudeness coming out of the mouths of gamers, young and old. The basic solution? Getting parents and other sorts of mature gamers involved in keeping the young ones from going completely nuts during a bout of Halo 2 (or in an MMO or Xbox Live match).

For instance, he cites this one example of a father leading his son and his son's friends to beating other experienced teams:

These guys had obviously practiced together quite a bit, and used great teamwork in soundly thumping my team and me. I could tell this parent was involved in what his kid was doing, instead of a) totally ignoring his son b) telling his son that video games would rot his brain, or c) “acting” like he was interested in his sonÂ’s hobby. Not once did these guys use any foul language, unless you count “noob” as a four-letter word.

The other part of the solution is for responsible gamers to become role models rather than hypocrites. Sure, it might take a bit of role-playing to suppress the urge to swear, but if you can influence even one other person to act more civilized in his killing and dying, then it becomes a step forward for all of gamerkind.

Besides, wouldn't seeing kids playing politely and sharing strategies look better for gaming's reputation than having people testify against video games and watching our backs against an irate Florida lawyer? What do you think?

Cheaters suck

I would just like to give everyone out there who cheats on Texas Holdem Poker a big thank you for cheating and ruining what could be a really great game. People lag, people disconnect, people will even firewall your ip to kick you out of their room. Its so awesome,.... NOT The game could have been SOOOOOOOOO fun but the leaderboards are ruined. Why didnt they test this stuff out before releasing the game!?

As someone who knows little about poker, I can understand your sentiment. Luckily (or unluckily), the closest thing we have to a moderated poker game would be on an online casino.

Too many immature gamers out there

I can't stand playing online with kids (or those who act like it) are yelling and cursing about other players or boasting on about themselves Nothin is better than playin a game and everybody havin fun , no matter if you're havin a bad day and couldn't get any kills on a FPS , or havin a wreck in a racing game I personally don't take pride if I lose or win , but lose it when I can get a good match of CoD2 goin , people who are responsible and switch sides if uneven , and paticurally those who plan out strategicly to pose a challenge , of course there are some who are just run and gun or as I like to call em "aggressive" style players , but that just provides even more of a challenge when you adjust your plans into their style I'm more of a co-op person , but even I can appreciate a decent match on versus if the players are mature enough , I'm sure not many people can enjoy what sounds like a 10yo kid yelling and cursing during a match

Lol

I support this movement, but it isn't going to happen, not in a million years. So long as there are kids on online games, rudeness will prevail. Not saying a lot of adults aren't like this either (actually, in my experience with Xbox Live, 18 to 25 year olds can be the worst), but teenagers are definitely worse overall yes I know 18 and 19 year-olds can be considered teenagers, whatever
