Peter Molyneux on emotional AI, Natal, and Milo

The Microsoft E3 2009 Press Conference wowed the world with Project Natal, a motion camera supposedly so advanced that it takes voice and gesture recognition to an entirely new level. Adding an extra kick to that affair was a little kid called Milo, who demonstrates exactly what Project Natal is set out to do. Lionhead head Peter Molyneux now breaks the magician's code and reveals the tricks behind the illusion surrounding Natal and its boy wonder.

“People want to believe this so much,” Molyneux told Develop Online, laughing. "You’ve got to remember that we’re not creating a piece of academic research; Milo can’t actually think – we’re just making the illusion that he can.” The Lionhead boss even compared Milo to a Derren Brown mind trick - he can't read your mind, but he can collect and compile a few tricks together to make you think that he can.

This is what Molyneux calls "emotional AI." He then cited Populous and Theme Park as examples where similar but simpler technology can be found. Remember how you could adjust salt and ice content on the concession stands in Theme Park? More salt gets more customers. "That wasn’t real AI, but people thought it was great – that these little people were getting thirsty and everything, but it was just a single line of code," said Molyneux.

An illusion it may be, a damn good one it is. While I don't believe that Milo would make it big as a game (probably more as an XBL helper or something), he did accomplish what he was created to do - demonstrate the visual and vocal capabilities of Natal. Besides, a virtual friend? That'd be a sad, sad game to play.

Would be fun if this was possible though:

milo isnt a lie exactly. hes more of a look what natal can do. Pretty much is the saying a robot cant love or cry. Well milo is basically a robot and does what hes designed to do, and that is to show what Natal can actually do

Besides, a virtual friend?

how much worse is that than a virtual pet?

i'd be happy with a marilyn monroebot ;)

..

The Marilyn Monroebot part saved the comment lol.

A virtual pet is one thing, a virtual boy is another. A virtual pet is something people can raise and train with a goal in mind. A virtual boy on the other hand is just creepy, weird, and like the post said, kinda sad. I'm glad Milo isn't going to be a game because it would be really weird to try and push a virtual child onto people and call it fun (would they make pedos stay 200ft away from it?) I'm still not impressed with any of the motion controllers and I'm not looking forward to anyway of them, I'm just really depressed that the guy behind Fable is so obsessed with virtual children that we probably won't see another Fable game ever...

Actually Milo is a game

Not sure where you read that it isn't, or why this QJ writer is insinuating it, but Milo is a full game that will be released at or around the launch of Natal. It's also called Milo and Kate, and Kate is a dog. Quote from OXM interview with Molyneux

OXM: Is it a proper project with plans for release?

Peter: It's a game, and it's been in production since before Natal. It's got a story, and I would love to release it when Natal is launched; that'd be cool

So prepare to be creeped out
