Owner of eight failed Xbox 360 explains failures |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: GPU, Microsoft
And although console gamers usually don't come with the geeky and techie know-how of Banzai Runner hobbyists, an owner of eight failed Xbox 360s finally tapped into his inner geek and got the problem of the Xbox 360 issues down pat.
In response to the surprisingly non-technical explanations of Microsoft's Todd Holmdahl - the man behind the hardware aspects of the next-gen console - Jeremy Anderson gave his own analysis of why the Xbox 360 is failing considerably. And he did that on the comment section of the published interview in question. His comment goes as follows:
...the problem isn’t just with launch units. Of the 8 I’ve had so far, only 2 were manufactured in the first three months of launch. The last one I had red-ring on me was manufactured in November of ‘06 - a full year after launch.
The problem is that the cooling design of the 360 doesnÂ’t hold up. The cooling of the CPU was well done, with a heat pipe to draw the heat away from the chip (and accordingly, away from the mainboard). The problem is that the GPU and its low-profile heatsink sit under the DVD drive, and are given a very narrow channel for air to be pulled across the heatsink by the fans. When the GPU heats up enough, not only does it reflow the solder in the ball grid array slightly, it can cause the entire mainboard to flex - a phenomenon largely caused by the X-shaped brackets that hold the heatsinks on under the mainboard. They hold the heatsinks down to the chips with a tension fit that presses up directly underneath those chips.
So when the system gets too hot, the combination of loosened solder with a mainboard that flexes from heat causes the GPU or CPU to actually break its connection from the board - resulting in the 3 red lights and secondary error code 0102 (the “unknown hardware error” code).
This is true of ALL systems manufactured thus far, not just the launch systems. Hopefully, MicrosoftÂ’s new measure of adding a heatpipe to the GPU heatsink will reduce the heat on the mainboard itself enough to keep this from happening. We shall see.
Gladly that some people did have the know-how to try that nifty Arctic Silver trick or a modded air duct design that channels air even underneath the DVD drive, the Xbox 360 failures aren't much of a threat to the modding bracket. But as many are unwilling to open their units to create a custom solution, here's to hoping that Microsoft's new solution works out considerably well.

"I think PlayStation 3 is following a particular trend of 1 and 2, and if you looked at the history of it, it%u2019s a very similar history. It takes a long time for producers, and more time because of the cost factor, to embrace the full bandwidth of PlayStation 3. It%u2019s only using 20% of it right now. And producers will always wait to see how it%u2019s going, and once they use the full bandwidth the games experience is stunning."
You 2 are probaly fanboys so im wasting my time telling you because you continue to suck M$ ***** and deny any type of news that might have anything to do with ps3 proving to be superior then your cheaply made 360.

I've had my console since launch and have had it in a relatively tight corner, and it has never overheated. But then again I don't play for hours at a time.

On-Topic . 8 failures, are you kidding me. Its user error in this case, or environmental. I can see 1, or 2, possibly 3. But $^$%^ 8, come on now.

Yeah the PS3 will last 10 years.
It only uses 20% of it's awesome power right now.
Games like Metal Gear 4, Final Fantasy, etc are only possible on the PS3 because of blu ray's incredible storage.
The innovative suxaxis tilt sensor is impossible to emulate with other controllers.
You do know these are blatent lies right? Thinks sony said to try to save the PS3's horrible sales slump?
Idiots.

Like your PS3 has never had any problems, neither have either of my 360s. I had a launch Premium up until the release of the Elite that froze on me three times in Oblivion (and it was a known problem and fixed with an update) and the Elite I traded up to has had no issues so far. I even played Dead Rising, the game known to crash 360s, for 14 hours straight to get the seven day survivor Achievement on my Elite and nothing happened. I also just recently left it on over night for a glitch in Superman (for an Achievement again, lol) and again, nothing happened.
I'm not going to deny that the PS3 seems to be built much better than the 360, because it does, and I'm not going to deny that the 360 definitely has some design flaws, because it definitely does. But for the record, both my brother's and my PS2s broke, and his second one broke. Two gave the cannot read disc error and the other just stopped turning on.

I have 2 of the machines on my desk and the other in a media cabinet. Its all a matter of how you use the machines and where you locate them.
Ps3 fanboys, dont even say it. You know that ps3 gets hotter and louder than 360 when in a cabinet. I have friends that owns them and complains about their ps3 freezing and being loud even when just watching a movie.
I find that ps3 owners are like apple owners. They stay quiet about their purchase because they dont want the world to know that they just got screwed.

I tried my best to be as unbiased as possible there but as you can probably see I prefer the PS3. And yes I do have one.
I cannot believe how much people put up with the 360 breaking and paying for another other one i mean it was a big deal if i knew someone whose ps1 or n64 broke. It's even at a point when people think its ok!!! if "maybe 3 or 4 do break" if thats the average amount of 360's people go through then i defiantly don't want one. I am all for competition i like what the Wii is doing and the 360 had potential but MS is taking the pi$$ out of its customers and i'm shocked by how loyal some people are and its not like MS need more money. Especially when there all like " its purely about the gameing and we center it around the gamer" its hard to play a game when the console isn't working.
In the end I personally couldn't care less if Sony "win" or "lose" i got a ps3 now i love it, i will love it even more when some of those games come out and there only the Exclusives.

that's why it always surprises me to hear of these problems. of all the people i know with 360s, only two of them have had to return their console; 1 of them because it had a firmware update that would have caused him to get banned on live, and the other was after he let someone borrow his console.

Sooo now u will pay $400 for the machine $50 for LIVE and another $50 for the extended warranty $80 for the Wi Fi then $40 for a wireless controller which needs constant batteries
thats a total of $620(minus batteries) for a wireless online game console that u dont have to pay to get replaced if it does die.
Thats real nice, just goes to show u to what lengths MS will go through to make cash. Sony is losing money on every PS3 sold some may say its idiotic to do that but at least there passionate about it and are going to great lengths to please customers.
Also please excuse my ignorance but what happens when ur xbox 360 dies. Do u take it back to the store? send it straight to MS? and do they Really fix your console? or do they just give u a new on?

Why don't you ADD up all the UNNECESSARY add-ons for both systems in order to compare them?
$480 for the Elite verse $600 for the PS3
That is the only comparison that matters. I don't have a 1080P TV, so why the F*CK would I need a gaming system with HDMI? A*SHOLE!
Oh yeah, then compare over 150 games for the 360 to the 45 for the PS3. You are a sucka, you blind ******ity fanboi!!!
Reply
I am sorry i have done my post so why don't YOU show a list of "unnecessary add-ons"
Sorry if you're not smart enough to understand that i wasn't comparing them i was stating what the PS3 has and stating the 360's equivalent and some of them just so happened to be "add-ons" and its entirely up to the individual if there "unnecessary" or not but if there not its just gonna cost u extra on xbox 360 but come as standard with ps3
and the whole "Elite vs PS3" shout is useless the only "elite" things are 120gig and blue tooth and HDMI still no Wi Fi or HD-DVD drive then you also have to buy Live and pay more for the warranty extension crap cause the "Elite" still breaks down.
"I don't have a 1080P TV, so why the F*CK would I need a gaming system with HDMI? A*SHOLE!"
Hahahahaha awwww do u want sympathy cause u dont have a 1080P TV :( i mean come on!!!! all i said was literally "HDMI" and insinuated its on the PS3 and not the 360. Then u call me an "A*SHOLE!" basically for no apparent reason i was just saying "ps3 has HDMI 360 dont" u obviously felt threatened and lashed out because it was too painful for u to accept it, then made up a lame excuse to make HDMI seem negative when really its just another option ps3 users have to use IF THEY WANT while "normal 360s" aren't given the choice. What makes it even more laughable is how the Elite has HDMI!!! as well so i think its safe to say you wont be getting one of them. MS again treating its loyal fans like dirt by always bring out new "UNNECESSARY add-ons" since thats all Elite is.
OHHHHHHhhhh great 150 games i mean if there all as good as Gears of War then i would consider the 360 but sadly that is not the case.
u bring shame to 360 fans!!!!

And I like how you throw in a bunch of things that either a. some people don't need or b. don't cost money at all. Wireless internet is still garbage, and you only need the wifi adapter if you were one of the chumps who fell for it. I pay $50 monthly for wired cable and it sucks, I can't imagine how crappy wireless DSL is (actually I can, I have a few friends who have it and they get disconnected three times a day. Wireless internet ftw!)
And about the controller and batteries, you do know the $400 package comes with the wireless controller, right? A wireless controller that never drops the connection. And the play and charge kit for $15 comes with a rechargeable battery pack, no need to keep replacing batteries (unless you somehow can't afford the $15 play and charge kit either)
Don't even get me started on the whole "Sony is passionate and cares about their customers" thing. That is the biggest load I have ever heard, but I just won't get into it. MS has been up until now losing money on every console sold BTW, and one look at XBL (which destroys PSN and is easily worth the money) shows they actually do care about their customers.
Since I feel like being nice (even though people like you give gamers, and especially PlayStation fans, a bad name) I'll tell you what happens when your 360 dies. If it's under warranty, you call 18004MYXBOX and give them your address. They ship out a box which usually arrives in two to five days depending on where you live. Once you get that you put the 360 in the box (just the unit itself, not the hard drive as well) and it arrives to MS within another two to five days. If they can figure out exactly what's wrong with your console they do fix it and send it back. If they can't, they send you a new one.

1st of i find it foolish and extremely stupid and narrow minded for you to believe THAT EVERYONE WHO CAN HAVE $400 MUST THEN HAVE AN EXTRA $50 well another $50 specifically for warranty. Ok so what about a teenage boy whose parents wont buy him a Xbox360. So he gets a paper round or worked hard around the house to get some pocket money. He finally gets enough to get the box he goes to the store and hes realizes he can either get a game OR the warranty i am pretty sure he would pick the game.
Heres another story (stories are fun :D) a mother is getting her twins a xbox360. Shes in the store with them she gets the xbox360 takes to the counter and lil Timmy picks up forza 2 and puts it down as well then when its getting priced up the clerk mentions the extended warranty. At 1st the mother is like "uuuuh another $50 ok then may as well" then as she just thought that lil Shelly pulls her mothers skirt for attention and she turns around to see lil Shelly holding up gleefully with two hands Gears of War. The mother tells her that they already have a game but Shelly starts to make a scene claiming she don't like simulator racing games and how thats "Timmy's" game. The mother has been there done that too many times and the only way to settle this is to let her have her game. She quickly thinks about the warranty and thinks "the amount of things i have that have outlast the warranty so this will be fine" so she tells the clerk she will take the game instead of the warranty.
Did u just make a fool out ur self by presuming that EVERYONE can afford the extra $50 for the warranty? and u said u shouldnt be aloud children if u dont get the warranty but look at the mother of lil Timmy and Shelly(jokes)
thats another thing "casual gamers" don't no about the RED RING OF DEATH and only "safety man!! " buys warranties on everything he buys. U say its sooo stupid not to buy the warranty because u know that there is quite high chance of it breaking down i mean look at this related article that guy had 8!!! die on him. In this day and age alot of ppl shouldn't have to worry about there objects dieing ppl expect there things to last forever and by the time that it does break its well over due for a new one so there not too fussed to splash out on something new but end of the day now matter how u try to spin it XBOX360

The current power ussage of the 360 is about 22.931%. Before you ask me to site my source its from one of my friends who has worked and iss currently working for the games industry and developing 360 titles. Also when running the Unreal 3 engine which i might add has had vast problems running on the PS3 only usses 24.9235% so that 75% more power. Now for you storage issue most game load vital file and such into the bios or ram on load. Now with the hard drive and abbility to install and multi-disk swap storrage doesnt become so much of an issue. Also point to note is that the 360 uses xp technology and also has room to run some direct X 10 stuff when the new updates come out later this year. Any who back to you storrage point you fail to see that windows uses a swap file now this swap file makes it possible to store large ammounts of compressed data to say a flash drive using say ready boost. With flash drives now topping 8gb thats a lot of compressed data so where your blue ray may be a way of playing lots of uncompressed stuff. With 2 or three 8gb usb keys we can compress the data down to say a dual layered 16 gb dvd. and oh before you say it the maximum capacity of a DVD is about 22gb un compressed. The fact is that although restance fall of man may have taken up 30gb uncompresed the xbox could more than handle 3 times that just using a usb key and DVDs to decompress files as it needs them also remember that the transfer rate of a flash drive is faster than that of a Blu ray drive. With regaurds to the overheat problem it is more likly the temprature of the GPU causing the problem i have had 2 xboxes so far and both times they fail its seems to be a graphics problem. However a friend of mine has had 5 PS3's since launch they keep failing also point of note when the 360 was launched at E3 at least all of the machines worked. Last year sony had many of there machines fail at E3. Its explanation was the machines where to close together and that caused them to over heat. At least when i put mine and my friends xbox next to each other they seem to work without failing.

PS a supercomputer let me define that for you so you dont think for one moment your PS3 is one
SUPERCOMPUTER - A computer that is able to operate at a speed that places it at or near the top speed of currently produced computers. Most supercomputers cost millions of dollars, and the traditional model of using one large computer with proprietary hardware is being challenged by using a cluster of cheaper computers with more standard hardware.
With the PS3 being slightly dellayed i doubt you could have ever called it a super computer lets run it against a dual proccesor Mac Pro and watch it die.

Fact it is easier to write a game for an xbox than for a ps3. You can produce a game for an xbox and a pc at the same time. If i want to play a game 2 player i can put someone on my pc and someone on my xbox.
Fact i like my xbox someone actually designed my control pad instead of thoring together old idea and ones stollen from nintendo.
When ian write asked sony to sponser a load of clubs to get kids off there computers and consoles sony said no it would cost us money and refused.
Bill gates of microsoft gave away large amounts of his own money to help others.
I know which company i would rather give my money to.
Plus Halo 3 excites me fall of man sent me to sleep. Bio shock looks amaizing. Word is Crysis is comming to XBOX.
Also EA anounced that all of its High def games on the 360 would be twice as fast twice as pretty and twice as smooth.
Oh and i dont think sony are getting rock band but i could be wrong.
Oh and please do tell me how sony owners are going to rent HD movies without leaving the house in europe.
Oh thats right they cant.
Oh yes i would have 10000 xboxes if it meant that i didnt have to own a PS3 and please dont refer to me as a fan boy i have a wii and my computer is an apple which i do prefer to a pc. Incase you where wondering an apple is another type of computer. a computer has a keyboard and mouse not a suxy six axes.
