On the Xbox 720, 640k, and throwing money

Jack Schofield has an article up on the Technology blog of the Guardian asking what the Xbox 720 (or whatever Microsoft decides to call the next Microsoft console) will be like.

While he really doesn't speculate on what the imagined console will be like he does point out the amazing amounts of money that Microsoft can throw into the console just to make it something profitable. Here's his words:

Remember, Microsoft has $40 billion in the bank, plus $1 billion a month in profits, and nothing to spend it on. In December, Microsoft gave $30 billion back to shareholders in a one-off distribution of wealth, and it's disposing of another $30 billion buying back its own stock. Under the circumstances, it can easily afford to invest (or,if you prefer, lose) the odd billion a year in winning the console market. Over the next 10 to 20 years, the potential pay-off could be huge.

Now while we can't disagree with that, we can disagree with this other passage that he said:

After that there will be the Xbox 370 or 720 or whatever, which will presumably use a compatible processor and have better graphics, but what else do gamers need? The "law of diminishing returns" is already setting in....

Wasn't the "what else would they need" line said countless of times before, much to the dismay of many a business man who got left out? 640K of memory isn't enough for anyone; even if Bill didn't really say it.

Even if Microsoft loses this generation, they won't give a sh*t.

Maybe that's actually more of a reason to support the PS3 and decry the 360, because unlike Microsoft, Sony probably can't afford to lose.

And if subsequent Xboxs can keep taking market share at the rate the 360 is, Microsoft will eventually dominate the entire industry.

Keep "supporting" (if that's what you can call it, since I doubt half of you actually own the console) your PS3 you Sony fanboys, it needs it.

If they keep having better games the the POS3 then i'll keep buying them and stay away from sony....since sony "can't afford to lose" why are they so damn arrogant and think they only need a couple of good games.

to be honest ill buy whichever system has the better games. im not about to make an economical decision to sway my decision. I have a 360, not a ps3, not because i support a monopoly but because why the fack would i buy a ps3 to not play it but to "save the industry".

frankly imo ms entering the market has been a godsend, the industry would have collapsed in sonys hands.

You cant beat Microsoft. Microsoft owns your house, your dog, everything. Its like the Umbrella Corp. from Resident Evil. 9 out of every 10 homes has a Microsoft product. They rule the world of technology hands down. The Xbox360 is such a great machine. The PS3 isnt really that great because the Xbox360 can do what the PS3 can do and more.

The games are far better on the 360. *****...the Xbox Live could just as well compete with AOL in terms of a community service.

I went through 3 PS2's because their ***** kep busting. I have had only one Xbox and only one Xbox360 which (knock on wood) hasnt had to have been sent away for repairing.

I wouldnt be surprised if one day Microsoft buys out Sony because they are just too inferior.

Sony can't afford to lose, but their idiots so they tried anyway, the real competition in the next-gen wars is between the already dominant XBOX 360 and the NINTENDO Wii

sony just have to buck their ideas up there a big company microsoft entered then industry just before it fell into sonys hands and got a upset winin sonys eyes so if they just stop *****ing around they havent relesed a decan console in like 3 years so SONY STOP *****ING UP
