No new Xbox in the near future, Microsoft sticking with the 360

Microsoft will focus on current Xbox - Image 1The original Xbox was released on 2001, which was followed four years later by the 360 in 2005. It's now 2009, a brand new year. Will we see a brand new Xbox model anytime soon?

Nope, says Microsoft's Robbie Bach.

Down at CES, Bach explains that they'll be sticking with this gen of the Xbox for longer than they did with the original one, since it's getting harder to get consumers to upgrade. Instead of rushing out with a new model, they'll be focusing on improving the console's games and features.

So many potshots I can shoot at Microsoft here, but we all already know what happened last time they rushed to bring their console to the public, so let's just breathe a sigh of relief at the news and leave it at that.

I have to agree that people are having a hard time to upgrade. They can't even afford to get both systems to stop fanboyism.

with the amount of great games that are coming out for the 360 people need time to play those, I mean if sales were slowing down they probably would have within the next 6 months but they are continung to rise.

360 sales spur with every holiday sales so I don't see any chance of sales declining anytime soon. Just look at the ps2. ppl are still buying it after what? 7 years?

Not the best descision, with the current hardware inside the Xbox 360 it won't be able to compete with the PS3 in the near future

Or are they going to release a New Processor + Graphics addon, well I doubt it's even possible

Really I think I know what they will do, they will start competing with the Wii they can easily do that I think they already started with the childish new firmware and the cheap games that will support those childish looking avatars

They know in the near future they will earn more with Shovelware Wii games and Microsoft always has been chasing the money so I really think that will be the plan sadly

Another un-informed PS3 Fanboy

There's nothing wrong with the 360s tech and its still able to compete with most PS3 games.

Anyway there is a lot of life left in the 360.

Who says I have a PS3?

I'm a PC gamer and the PS3 hardware is just amazing, the Xbox 360 isn't for long

It like you can build a PC for $300 it will play all current games on good settings and coming games in med/low settings

You could also build a PC for $1000 this will play all current games on good settings and a lot of games coming in the future also on good settings

And please keep me out of your sick console wars calling everybody a fanboy when they don't talk positive about your superhero

Even if you say you aren't a fanboy, you're still judging the PS3 as a better system, and the Xbox 360 without owning either system. Doesn't that make you a PC fanboy?

Dude I know what's in a PS3 and what's in a Xbox 360

I'm not this kind of guy that just shouts it looks better on my console, I know what both systems can handle and I can see an ending in Xbox 360

You are saying I need the console to know which is best that's total nonsense all a person needs to know is the hardware and what it's capable of

HitDyl is right...it is a fact that ps3 has the best hardware, but it doesnt mean it is the console that is doing better in the market right now.. but we cannot predict the future :)

» Another Satisfied Customer

I'm happy with my purchase. The NXE proves the system can change with the times. Gears of War and Halo 3 proves that games can evolve online gameplay and improve graphically. Fable and Fallout 3 will show us what the West can do with downloadable content in RPG's. SquareEnix shows us how the East believes in Microsofts system. Xbox Live Arcade and Comminuty Games are the gateway to the future of the gaming industry with challenging original titles as well as updated classics from smaller developers. Video Marketplace and Netflix show us that there will not be a need for an optical solution to movies and tv shows like Sony says.

I don't think HitDyl is saying the PS3 IS the better console, just that its hardware will carry it further than the 360 in the long run, so if Microsoft will keep going with the 360 they will have to keep finding new things to try (on par with Hit's guess on that they'll begin to try attracting the casual crowd)

I agree with BIH that the 360 still has stuff to squeeze out of it; the Unreal 3 Engine never ceases to amaze us, and hopefully other devs can still find ways to maximize performance and aesthetics on the 360, but that doesn't mean there's equally (or better in opinion) work being pushed too on the PS3. I've only seen HD video footage of various PS3 games, but I think the work done on Resistance 2 and work being done on Killzone 2/Uncharted 2 (lots of 2s here) can pose some competition to the 360.

err....

Lets see what devs can bring the rest out with the 360's 3-core processor, but also lets see the potential of the Cell as well.

» Exactly

Who thought the new Xbox would hit in 09? No one I've ever talked to. So this comment from MS is pointless. 2010 is a stretch too, why would MS replace the 360 in its prime? It'll definitely hit in either 2011 or 2012 tho

by papajag - 2009-01-11 02:40
» ummm

Even though I have both systems I'm more leaning to the PS3 side. If my 360 wasn't modded I would have lost so much much trying to get that s*** fixed. If you get a PS3 you will also see what I mean when I say the PS3 is more money and user friendly. Don't hate consoles if you haven't tried them. The only reason I'm more PS3 is because I have the older model of 360 the new ones have lower failure rate so try that.

by Lethal_NFS - 2009-01-11 05:02
» Xbox 360 sucks now

It is definately time for a new console by Microsoft. The 360 is dated now. No Blu-Ray? No Bluetooth? DVD Format? 30% failure rate? Time to give up on this piece of crap console. The console has nothing that says it can last another couple years. The format alone will result in great games passing over the 360 and on to the PS3.

Xbox 360 you had a great run but you are too old for me and you lack the ability to keep me interested.

Its not you...its me.

Let me precede my following comment with this: I own a 360, and I love it.

But I agree with this guy 100%.

However, 4 years is just too short. Microsoft has to stick it out 1 more year, and I'm hoping for a mid to late 2010 release.

by Viphid - 2009-01-11 13:59
» Not hating...

more like appreciating. I don't need a Playsta because the XBOX 360 gives me what I need. When you can update a system to grow with the demands of your customers, what else do you need from a console maker? I just don't care what Sony tries, it just doesn't interest me. I could even get a PS3 for free at this point and I would trade it in for store credit. You can own every system out there and claim you aren't biased because you do and it doesn't matter to me. You might as well just preach system tolerance to a brick wall, it'll reach more people. For as long as their are different companies making systems, there will always be fanboys. ^_-

» It has the only thing it needs to last quite a few more years

And that is customers my friend.

If you go to any store and ask a random person what they think of Blu-Ray, they'll tell you "I don't give a sh*t".

The 360's hardware will be dated soon, but that will only matter to the die-hards who need the latest and greatest. And those are not the people who pay MS's bills. The rest of the people will not notice, because they'll still be enjoying great games

People from the very beginning of this (new gen consoles) said that the great games would pass over the 360 and be made for PS3 because of Blu-Ray. I don't think that happened...

by Master Chef - 2009-01-11 15:57
» About bluetooth

Do you really think the lack of Bluetooth is a con? How so? The proprietary form of wireless MS uses is arguably better than bluetooth, because it can't be interfered with by anything else in your house, because nothing else in your house uses it

by demologik - 2009-01-12 17:43
» i own both.

I OWN BOTH CONSOLES AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THE PS3 TRUMPS THE 360 IN THE GRAPHICS DEPT. once developers really start utilizing the Cell BE through coding, the PS3 will get cheaper to develop for, right now, its a matter of re-training dev's on how to USE the cell properly. we are now starting tos ee the true might of the cell BE. I say 2009 is the year of the PS3 definately. Since i bought my PS3, I haven;t even turned on my 360. and i own 16 games for my 360. All the best titles too. Ps3 i've only got 7 games so far, but they are ALL good. And Blu-Ray on my 52" samsung LCD is nothing short of breathtaking.

» You're right

You're right, noone wants an outdated console. Everyone wants the latest and greatest tech, regardless of the games.
