The Xbox Live Experience in detail - Image 1

Some of you were wondering what else was in store for us when Microsoft announced the the Xbox Live Experience. Sure, we knew it had avatars, and Live Party functionality, but what else did the future hold for us, the Xbox 360 consumer? Major Nelson is on the case, with a letter from Marc Whitten detailing some of the new things that'll be made available in the fall.

Let's get right to the meat of the letter. Here are the outlined details from Whitten's memo that should pique your interest:
  • Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive.  Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.
  • Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web.  Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console.  Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.
  • Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide.  For everyone who loves the blades interface, itÂ’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide.  You can even access your full games library at all times.  No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.
  • LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos.  It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games.  LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.
  • Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends.  Games will support everything youÂ’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show.  Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions.  Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.
  • Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars.  You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community.  Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.
  • New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.
As you can see, there's a lot in the works for the Xbox 360 consumer. What we're most interested in is the ability to play from the hard drive, as that sounds like a great way to play through a potential multi-disc endeavor like the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII.

In any event, Whitten promised more updates in the future, so we'll keep you updated with more information as it becomes available.

How many people used to laugh at PS3 owners for having to store game data on the HDD? Seems like M$ thought it was a good idea.

360 just keeps getting better. Playing from HDD makes 360 so much quieter, finally a good reason to get the 120GB HDD. And I really don't care if there's gonig to be multi-disc games, you can just copy them. Man that's a good feature. Also, the party system is sweet.

And maybe it'll cool it down a bit, too... sigh.

» Yeah...

That is the main thing...you do not HAVE to....load times are fine right now, PS3 HAS to load data on to the HDD to come up to par with 360's load times.....so now 360 games can load even faster......but the loading isn't really a problem in any games, I think the main reason people would do this is so they do not have to listen to the ridiculously loud dvd-drive of the 360...

Actually I'm pretty sure you do copy the whole disc. But you need the disc in the drve to verify you own a physical copy of the game.

I have a 120G but dont think I'll use it for installs very often. However some games like Mass Effect could benefit from fast loading times via the HDD.

THANK YOU!!! OMG, I can't believe they listened... * note to self. MUST suggest more input to MS tech support.

Last phone call I made to them, I was asking about this. They said they *might release it in the near future but that was only 2 moths ago. It's probably just a coincidence but either way. THANK U MS!

This is WICKED! FINALLY, my consoles lens/drive can finally have a break. This is the ONLY part on my unit I'm so worried about. This will definately conserve the use of the drive and also bring long life to the most prone part of the 360. THANK U AGAIN!

OMG, the whole update list is just AWESOME! the friends party thing, primetime, market place, avatars and to top it off, the new look. MUCH MUCH MUCH better IMHO.

I honestly can use another theme for my console. we finally have a choice now! WooT! THANK U A BILLION TIMES MS!

If MS keeps up with this wicked ups, I'll going to ditch my PS3 for it is SOOOOOoooo boring now compared to this.

LolZ, this is soooo coolz. I was eye popped @ the end when I saw it. *boing!

This feat is so essential for us LCD users. MS just have NO IDEA how happy they made us.

22" screens will sell like hotcakes after this release imo.

I play for at least 4-6h up to 4-5 times a week.

RROD is a prob for those noobs that flash like retards. which they deserved in the 1st place.

+ the HDD copy feat. will definatelly decrease the chances of RROD happenin. @ least their tryin 2 fix the prob dood. u ought to be happy 4 that...

They will eventually...

But dont expect much of it, like the PSP or PS3's web feat. Compared to PC it is very limited.

Nothing beats the real deal. Use laptop instead from ur room to enjoy www.porn.com instead.

» OMG, Cant wait!

WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE?

by Justingraziano - 2008-07-16 12:23
» Well...

Well, although party way innovative, the Play from Hard Drive feature is a rip off of the PS2 feature which allowed you rip certain games to your PS2's hard drive (original PS2 only) and play them much faster. As for the Dashboard feature I don't care cause the Dashboard is the ugliest system interface that I have ever seen in my whole life. Don't care about any new resolutions as my 360 stays connected to my old SDTV (my HDTV is for my PS3 only, I don't want that ugly white brick near my beautiful black HDTV which matches the PS3 perfectly). I really hope to see Play from Hard Drive added to the PSP (Memory Stick of course) and PS3 though. That would be really nice.

by Justingraziano - 2008-07-16 12:27

I got RROD once after I flipped over the system I never got it again.

» *ahem* actually...

I'd agree with any of you, but, being an owner of both consoles (PS3 and 360) and having set them apart myself. You're forgetting ONE TINY detail, mister Shatterdome. We get slower loading speeds because the BD-Rom reads slower than regular DVDs if you consider the usual file sizes in a DVD comparable to the ones in a BD take MGS4 for example... It had to be CUT down to fit a dual-layer BD... So, baseless posts like those trying to shove up one of the consoles, is purely idiotic and begging for a flame, which I won't provide... I'm just stating facts, if you don't agree with any of the things I said, I recommend you to check on facts or hardware info before the next post.

Later, Bugga12

» I wonder how quick Elderscrolls 4 loading times will be

When I download the full disc unto my HDD and play it with the disc still in tray, I really wonder if the increase in speed for Oblivion will be faster than they already are?

I hope they are pretty fast.

Hey you guys, I know everyone has already admitted that stuff up there but ever notice how Microsoft is now stealing other peoples ideas and using it as there own.

Xbox 360 is like a mini PC because PC uses HDD to play games but you still need disc in tray.

So much about the 360 is too much like a PC now adays.

Oh well, aslong as I get faster loading times on Oblivion.

What am I talking about, I am probably gonna get pretty fast loading times if it downloads the whole disc.

PS3 only install pieces and bits of it unto there HDD but it was 5 seconds faster or something, it didnt install the whole disc.
