New Xbox 360 controller to feature transforming D-pad

A new controller is on its way for the Xbox 360 and this one's eyeing more function and performance than just another fancy new color. It sports what Microsoft is calling the "transforming D-pad", which basically lets you perform certain actions with the D-pad easier. Major Nelson himself demoed how it goes, so if you're looking for something that puts more control in the controller, this might interest you.

By "transforming", they simply mean that that D-pad goes from flat to raised with one quick twist of the base. Would be handy for performing arcs and full circles, like when screw-drivering with Zangief.

The new controller will only be available through the Play & Charge kits coming out on September 9th. The set will cost you US$ 64.99.

as mentioned in other comments, it's not $65 for just the controller. it also has a play and charge kit. glorified usb, i know... i'm also assuming it comes with a rechargeable battery, which is not standard.

really? what's the problem with a button being convex now? i'm struggling to come up with a reason that it's bad...

Is just because I don't like taking my left thumb off of the joy stick so I reach over with my right and sometimes (Usually) press the home button.
And I'm not talking about the 65 dollar price tag, I'm talking about how they moved the one year XBL gold price up to 60$

There is no value in this. My friend pointed out that all the games out right now that use the colours to instruct new players on how to play will be totally lost. Not to mention making the games from now on, will it show grey and slightly less grey? The point of the colours is to easily tell one button from another.

You're obviously the retard here, because it's common knowledge that we humans are a lot more receptive to colours than we are to text. It takes absolutely no effort whatsoever to recognise a colour, so taking that away from us is just stupid, and counter-productive.

I'll probably pick one up for christmas. Although they should start including the rechargeable batteries with the controller, $64.99 for the controller, rechargeable battery pack and play & charge kit is the normal pack price.

some haters on here. the controller is nice and should be an improvement, especially for fighting games where the pop out d-pad would really come in handy, compared to the old d-pad.

It's $65 most likely because the charge kit is bundled with it, and those aren't free either. Just like filling your car with gas, we'll whine about the price, but still wind up paying for it.

These articles are like food for Sony fan-trolls. It's just like Sony with their PS3 in the past. This year isn't the best for Microsoft.

eh year of playstation doesn't sound right to me....i got both ps3 and xbox and right now its nobodies year at moment in my opinion... ps3 releasing move, releasing remakes except twisted metal only remake im looking forward to....and xbox well the new gold prices? seriously? and now this? i do gotta admit i like the color thing cause i've played with xbox for a while i don't need to look at the pretty colors i need to play the game.....and twisting d-pad sounds pretty useless to me imo

For less than $60 you get a Dual Shock 3 with the built in tilt sensor with rechargable battery using any standard usb cable without that gimmicky recharge kit. No need to transform the d-pad to use the d-pad well.

I don't know why everyone here is crying about the price since it comes with the play and charge kit and is the same price as the REGULAR controller we already have.

DS3 isn't shaped to your hand and is awkward to hold if you're playing a FPS compared to the xbox and Triggers are MEGA welcome
