Xbox 360 - Image 1Major Nelson has announced that a new system update for the Microsoft Xbox 360 home video game console has been released. This is a mandatory update, so those logging in over the next few hours will no doubt encounter it.

According to the Major's announcement, the update doesn't contain any new features or dashboard enhancements. Instead, it "contains code to ‘prepare for future growth of the service.’" The new Xbox experience update, the one that has all the bells and whistles, will arrive in the Fall.

Anyway, that's it. Log on to Xbox Live to get your console up-to-date. Keep checking back here on the QJ.NET Xbox 360 blog for more news.

» That's not that surprising

I've had a few of these dashboard updates and the reboot it does straight after the update is always a little faster then a normal system startup and yes you're logged back into live almost immediately.

If you power off after it's came back you'll be back to your normal slow ass startup next time. Most of the time these updates are really about M$ have found a bug in their system that could allow someone to run something they don't want them to or they have a new cache of weapons against idiots modifying their DVD firmware to pirate games. To be honest I hope catch another net full.

There's no homebrew to be had on the 360 so piraters have no excuse other then the weak excuse of it's to protect my game disc. If M$ are smart they'll make you only have the disc in the drive to start the game and then be able to eject it (if you have the game copied on your HDD).

It's impossible to copy games to HDD. The only possibility to boot backups is an 1:1 copy of the original disc.

this should be a reply to avatar76s post

This is part of the fall update coming to the 360. You will be able to copy the entire game data onto the HDD and play the game off of the HDD which will make your 360 a bit quieter and you should experience slightly faster load times. You must have the original game disc in the drive though.

The only problem you will have is that many of you with a 20GB HDD may only be able to copy 1 game at a time (if you have XBLA games/music/demos installed).

» where've you been?

The new firmware will do that. Just need the disc in the drive.

» Good and bad...

I've got a mixed opinion about the NXE. Yeah I'm a little late posting about it, but here goes.

Avatars = I like them. Sure they may be a rip-off/blend of Mii and Home but I really don't care. Not a major selling point for me though, I'm not likely to purchase many E10+ games in the near future.

Removal of Blades = Sure, take the interface we've come to know and love and totally scrap it. Oh wait, it's been moved to the guide but lacks themes... um, no. I really like the current blade format. As for Marketplace I totally agree with people who say the problem isn't the interface, it's how the content is organized. Would it really be that hard to use the existing template to have an alphabetic index at the top of the screen?

Themes = Ok this is where I'm really pissed off about the new interface. If they're only going to let me see half of the theme images then I want half of the MS Points I spent on themes refunded to me when this comes out.

I'd rather see themes used like this Youtube user suggests. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgHtG6VRcGc

» Oops...

I forgot to mention the one thing I'm really looking forward to for this update.

Copying games to the HDD. I bought a 120GB HDD way back when I maxed out my 20GB on videos, Shivering Isles, and a bunch of other DLC. Now I've got something like 63GB left free and waiting. It kills me to listen to the DVD lens fly back and forth while playing Crackdown.

» Yep

Can't wait to be able to do the installs. I just picked up a use Elite with 27 months of warranty coverage from my work for $400. Now I just have to sell my old system for $200, and I'll end up paying the same price as a new 120gb hard drive. While it may not affect some games too much it will definitely help to speed up The Orange Box... waiting 4 mins to fully load TF2 is just ridiculous.
