This is the offending DVD drive's innards.

Please hold all comments and reactions until the end of the article. Xbox 360s manufactured since the end of August have a new version of the Hitachi GDR-3120L DVD drive that makes firmware hacks and exploits harder, says Xbox-Scene. v0078FK contains several hardware changes that makes it more difficult to flash the firmware (all pictures from Xbox-Scene as well).

How harder? How more difficult? Xbox-Scene quote this summary from Garyopa that says it all (typos and all):

There has been many changes done to the new Hitachi GDR-3120L - Version: 0078fk drive:
  1. No "memdump" command works, totally new program needed
  2. Chip type has been changed to a 39VF020, so new "flashsec" program needed
  3. Black hard glue has been added covering all the chip pins and the controller pins.
  4. External "debug" triggering into ModeB has been removed.
What does all mean:
  1. The Team-X kit will no longer work on this drive.
  2. Dumping the firmware by software is currently not possible
  3. Wiring in a patching-on-the-fly "mod" would be very hard due to the "new black glue"
  4. Removing the flash chip to externally be read will destory the drive due to the "new black glue"
What options are left to us:
  1. Get more people working on this new drive, currently only in UK and Aussie.
  2. Destory at one drive to be able to dump the firmware, using a external programmer.
  3. Afterwards sitting down and re-writing all the programs: "memdump, firmcrypt, flashsec".
  4. If you can't wait, buy an older produced x360 console (Before Late July/Early Aug. dates).
You can find back what Hitachi-LG drive version you have by looking at the "ROM VER." on the front sticker of the DVD drive.

This is what you're looking for when you want to know the DVD version

That's all for now....
We are working on it....
Hopefully some poor soul will give us one personally...
So we can destory it and play with it for everyone else....

Okay, you can start reacting now. Especially if you own a recent-build 360.

you cant all be this stupid.

...please, besides painting and cutting a wierd shaped hole in the side of the xbox 360, what other mods are there???? ill make this simple: there are no LEGIT mods yet, so no, " I know some people dont use modds to cheat they use them for entertainment purposes" is a comment a retard would make.

good...

if this was used to play stuff other than ISOs I would be pissed. But seeing that this mod is only for ISOs, its good that it is blocked.

6 *****s ans counting

All of you must really like sucking Big Billy Gates' *****!!! The comments left on this thread up til now are from *****s who can't get their 360 modded and are bitter because they have to buy expensive sub-par games. I ***** the man every chance I get and am far from ashamed of it. All of you lames can suck it.

What!?!

Bitter because we cant get our system modded?? Why couldnt we? It's not rocket science, plus most Xbox-Ps2 modders do it so its not that rare. Buy expensive sub-par games??? Do you even have a 360?? In that case your full of ***** since you bought the system that "Big Bill Gates" created. And if you dont then you just bitter for not being able to afford one. Idiot!

cool

Allright now my older XBOX 360 is worth more. It's the perfect production phase where they're reliable and don't overheat yet can be fairly easily modded.

#7 a clown

Hmmm. I have a samsung drive on my X360. I also have 2 modded xboxes. One hard modded, and one soft modded. I use both just as my Media centers Via XBMC. I beleve in modding for homebrew and to remove region codes. I have been modding for years and im in no way bitter about not playing isos right now. Becasue if i wanted to, i could. My Sata controllers are the nforce chipset. I have a pioner 111 drive. But modding just to play ISOs is stupid; when i can purchase games on ebay for $10-$20 dollars shipped. My time is worth much more than it takes me to Download the Iso off of Usenet, private Ftp, etc;then possibly have to patch the SS into the iso, and then burn it. #7 You my friend are a child, that has no clue about the world of the scene. Now run along back to your Torrents or Limewire BS, and realize your not Elite, and you never will be. True modding of the X360 is not possible yet. Becasue the systems security has not been broken, only the drives.

hats off to you

To Bigperm, hats off to you indeed. I have much respect for the modding community who homebrew and try to formulate new and innovative programs for the the rest of the community to use *with* their gaming systems and to enhance their entertainment experiences. I wholeheartedly agree with the statement that it's simply much less hassle to go online and buy a game for much cheaper than it is to go through the hassle of sitting and waiting for something to download or to make something a working ISO on a system. To most of the children on this board - simply know that to real adults, paying 50-60 dollars for a game if they truly want it is no big deal at all. Considering how much people pay for their education at universities and how much people earn at their jobs, paying money for a game is no big deal.

I AGRE WITH #10 AND 11

yup thats right, it aint that hard to support game developers by buying their games....... as for ISO modding is just plain stupid and ur making the us economy even poorer than what it was b4. just buy a freakin game..dxnm.
