Naughty Dog co-founder: Natal killer app "not a video game, will revolutionize our dens"

Not everyone is convinced that the so-called killer app of Microsoft's Project Natal is a video game. One such person would be Naughty Dog co-founder and Monkey Gods' social startup chief Monkey, Jason Rubin. And he's got more than just a wild guess, he's practically singing praises for Natal already.

natal

Said he, "Things like Natal are going to revolutionize far more than gaming. I think putting Natal in the Xbox gives [it] an opportunity to become a lot more than just a game machine and I think there are things you can do outside of  gaming that will justify buying the Natal."

He continues that thought by saying, "I firmly believe that if Microsoft plays its cards right that they could sell far more Xboxes next generation... they could sell it to people that don't play games."

As for that killer-app, he posits that it's not a game per se that will catch the fancy of the gamers, but rather the interface and it's over-all feel within the living room environment.

"It's not whacking balls against the wall. It will be the interface and what it allows you to do to all the other things hooked up to your tv. I'm a firm believer now, after playing around with Natal, that Natal and things like it and are going to revolutionize our den."

What could probably be the most important aspect about Natal is that:

"Once you have that interface and the ability to hook this up to your den, Natal will give you reasons to love it that aren't games. Not calling games as bad, games will be good too, but the killer app may not be a game."

If you stopped being a fanboy you would know what technologies Natal has and consequently you would see that its technologies far surpasses the Eyetoy.

Sony's got a wii-mote coming out for the PS3? If it's better, will people say the Wii did it first? It's all in how the item is used and if a Co-Founder of Naughty Dog (2nd party dev to Sony mind you) is willing to see the future of Project Natal, so should you. Eye Toy was nice for card games and silly window washing shovel wear. So too was the XBOX Vision cam great for showing private parts on UNO to little kids. Natal has the potential to go beyond what Wii and the PS3 Motion Dongle have to offer. Facial recognition, Full body mo-cap, voice recognition. I doubt we'll be getting rid of controllers anytime soon, but Nintendo hinted at the future of gaming. Microsoft is showing us the start.

something tells me that they want to make it as a no remote control device like use the mic, hand gestures, if so then there are minor problems, if not then wth are they talking about?, i wouldn't say that natal is an actual Wii rip-off, sense the wii requires a control, but it is an Eye Toy rip-off, though the eye-toy sucked in its time i have one too so idk if microsoft has a good use and good hardware then they might do ok!

Its a nice piece of equipment it is just a shame that microsoft has it.

Probably won't be long until other companies start producing these things aswell. look at the web cam and all the other technology widely available

My prediction: it will flop badly.

And even it does sells magically, Sony's got ICU, which is the exact same thing, a stereocamera, so advantage gone. Google it.

We'll see if Natal is successful or not. At the moment, Natal has caught the public's imagination in the way the Wii did before launch, and that's half the battle for a new product. If Natal lives up to the hype, then it could potential be a huge success.

Regarding Sony's ICU. That's in the distant future, and as yet Sony have no plans for a stereocamera for gaming this gen;

This gen, Sony have chosen Arc as their preferred motion controller system, so they're not going to challenge their own product by releasing a stereo camera system as well. Perhaps with the PS4 (especially if Natal is a success), but not the PS3.

So that's far from "advantage gone" as you claim!

This is exactly like what happened with the wii. This like the wii will sell like hotcakes, but it doesnt make it good. Everybody will get bored of it and stuff it in their closets.

C'mon guys, pay attention. This was already done in the past by Sega. Do you guys forget SEGA ACTIVATOR? Its does the same thing that Natal does, even better I belive. It recognize your movements, as you do in real life.
NATAL ISNT NEW!! Its just a copy-cat from Sega Activator. You can check the release show here with Assaf, the creator:

and here a nice add:

Sega's Activator is NOTHING LIKE EyeToy much less Natal!

Activator is simple floor mounted device with 8 beams of InfraRed light, and therefore the player stands in the middle and it responds to the player breaking the beams of light. So to say that's the same as Natal is laughable (I'm sorry, but it really is). EyeToy was a *significant* step beyond Activator, and Natal is a step beyond EyeToy.

Devs like Jason Rubin are not stupid, they do know what they're talking about ;-), even if you disagree with their excitement or scepticism over products like Natal.

So when do you guys think the next playstation or xbox will be out?

I like how everyone is like "OMG it's exactly the same as Eyetoy! they're copycats!" Hello! Xbox already has the vision camera, which is like Eyetoy. Obviously Natal is significantly different. Most of you guys have no idea how it works. You act like it's some cheap web cam or something. Dummies!

If you think Natal means having to get up and 'dance around' for every game that supports it, then I guess you still don't understand much about Natal. Equally, since you seem to have an aversion to moving about, I assume you're not interested in Arc either. ;-)

Yeah, Natal is really mindblowing... At least i can get my own skateboards deck onto my skateboard in tony hawk.... Isn't that an amazing new technology that totally blows the way you can play games? You will see the new deck perhaps for about 1% of your gametime but hey... Natal is supported and you don't have to dance around.

i'm more interested in it being usb compatible and hackable to windows xp and up cuz the hackers are gonna be the ones to make the so called killer app i can see this becoming my general purpose interface if it can be hacked to work on windows
