Naughty Dog co-founder: Natal killer app "not a video game, will revolutionize our dens" |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Jason Rubin, Microsoft, Naughty Dog, Project Natal, xbox 360 titles

Said he, "Things like Natal are going to revolutionize far more than gaming. I think putting Natal in the Xbox gives [it] an opportunity to become a lot more than just a game machine and I think there are things you can do outside of gaming that will justify buying the Natal."
He continues that thought by saying, "I firmly believe that if Microsoft plays its cards right that they could sell far more Xboxes next generation... they could sell it to people that don't play games."
As for that killer-app, he posits that it's not a game per se that will catch the fancy of the gamers, but rather the interface and it's over-all feel within the living room environment.
"It's not whacking balls against the wall. It will be the interface and what it allows you to do to all the other things hooked up to your tv. I'm a firm believer now, after playing around with Natal, that Natal and things like it and are going to revolutionize our den."
What could probably be the most important aspect about Natal is that:
"Once you have that interface and the ability to hook this up to your den, Natal will give you reasons to love it that aren't games. Not calling games as bad, games will be good too, but the killer app may not be a game."

And even it does sells magically, Sony's got ICU, which is the exact same thing, a stereocamera, so advantage gone. Google it.

Regarding Sony's ICU. That's in the distant future, and as yet Sony have no plans for a stereocamera for gaming this gen;

This gen, Sony have chosen Arc as their preferred motion controller system, so they're not going to challenge their own product by releasing a stereo camera system as well. Perhaps with the PS4 (especially if Natal is a success), but not the PS3.
So that's far from "advantage gone" as you claim!

Activator is simple floor mounted device with 8 beams of InfraRed light, and therefore the player stands in the middle and it responds to the player breaking the beams of light. So to say that's the same as Natal is laughable (I'm sorry, but it really is). EyeToy was a *significant* step beyond Activator, and Natal is a step beyond EyeToy.
Devs like Jason Rubin are not stupid, they do know what they're talking about ;-), even if you disagree with their excitement or scepticism over products like Natal.
