MS says 'No' to Xbox 360 Price Drop

Console warA lot of you may have been hanging on those well-stashed benjamins in anticipation of the rumored Xbox 360 price drop by around $100 USD before Christmas, well, prepare your mallets; not for your piggy banks, but for pounding grandma's unused pillow at the attic to relieve your frustration. As you might have guessed by now, official word has come from MS stating that there are currently no plans for a price drop this fall.

It seems that the Bill Gates-owned company is confident enough on riding on the bad PR PlayStation 3 has been lately receiving (downgrade rumors, of course the price, etc.) that it won't make a price-cut effort to pad its current 10 million consoles sold lead over Sony's next-gen machine. It has been earlier speculated that the Xbox 360 will be offered in a cheaper price to better veer away the market's interest over the looming arrival of PS3.

Still, this may be a risky move for Microsoft's part because it may be overlooking the threat Nintendo's Wii is posing. Arguably having the most promising innovations so far, Wii is also expected to carry a price tag not higher than $250 USD.

Now that Microsoft has decided to keep the $299 pricetag on 360s, will it finally convince reluctant spenders to stop waiting for a price drop and start bagging their console, or have they just prodded them to wait a little longer not for PS3 perhaps, but for Wii? It's getting harder and harder to predict the outcome of these moves, what do you think?

# there is a price dropEzekiel_Xz 2006-06-24 23:28
the core system is now £200 in the uk, was £230 and I seen a premium for 265 and it was 280. So retailers are playing with the prices a bit.

They will probably drop the price in November, coupled with the release of Gears Of War in November, to try and stop people grabbing a PS3 at its launch.

Lmfao! Nintendo Wii doesn't pose a threat to anything. It will be in last place this gen, 360 will be on top, & PS3 will be in second.

Besides, the Wii has horrible controls and everything especially if you played it at E3.

# Wait til the FallGuest 2006-06-25 03:08
If Micorsoft admitted that they're dropping the price of the 360 in the Fall, many people including myself would just wait until then and pay $100 less. So obviously they'll deny it now but that doesn't mean we won't see a price drop near the launch of the PS3.

is too soon to be droping prices, that would send the wrong message to the competition. the 360 is a great console and is worth every single penny u pay for it. 399.99$ plus tax.

much as we'ld all like a price drop, they're already making a sizeable loss with each machine (remember the parts alone cost far more than the retail price) - so until the raw material costs drop significantly I woudn't imagine any major drop.

realistically when the PS3 comes out it'll be about £200 more than a 360 (and tricky as hell to find 1 - just imagine the eBay prices...) so what would u prefer: a ps3 with zero games, a 360 with 5 games, or even a 360 & a Wii with 1 or maybe 2 game(s)??? Get the feeling the PS3 will go the way of the original Neo Geo - fantastic machine, but FAR 2 pricey.

Yeah lets just hope the BR games aren't $200 a pop, or it will really flop :P

Sad thing is, my buddy way back when had a neo geo...so ppl will actually still buy it :P

But yeah, too soon for a price drop...man the PSP value pack has only dropped $20 in price and it's been out almost 2 years...

the 360 is 400 dollars. i realize the core is 300, but nobody wants that, nobody with a brain at least. thats like saying the PS3 is only 500 dollars, only 100 more than the 360. or like saying a PS3 costs 300 more dollars than a 360. as far as im concerned, only the price of the premiums of each system are worth mentioning, because for the vast majority they are the only ones worth getting. i love my 360, but dont say it only costs 300 dollars to make it sound cheap.

and my 2 cents: if i can come up with an extra 250 bucks, i will definately be getting a wii

Another thing is people are still talking about the hd-dvd features in the xbox360? If you guys keep talking about the price then you have no right to mention the hd-dvd drive because that is going to be a add on and probaly be 100+ so if you look at it 400+100+=Xbox360 with a high definition player. And I know some of you might say that the drive is optional and this and that but wasnt that one of the purposes of the xbox360 to play these new hd-dvd movies and such? So please micrsoft fans dont say ps3 is too expensive and then talk about how the hd-dvd is going to rule in the same sentence.

Umm, no, only 15% or so of Americans have an HDTV, it's not big yet, and the percentage of that percentage that have an HDMI slot with 1080p support is probably much, much lower. So the PS3 $500 pack is good for the vast majority of people.

I love my 360, but nobody in their right mind would buy the core, completely pointless, it's like wasting $60 (core + HDD = $400, + XBL headset, ethernet cord, remote = around $460)

So in other words, for most people, the PS3 is $100 more than the 360.

# gotta happenGuest 2006-06-25 13:47
Its like this.

Drop the price and you will sell more consoles. Therefore instead of selling 1million lets say you sell 1.5/2million cheaper. You will lose out to start will but you have other Million people buying software.

Come on MS if you wanna stand tall and get great sales.
