More Spring Update woes: death via update |

If you want read about two pages worth of sad stories involving the feared Xbox 360 "red ring of death" click our "read" link below. But before you do that, here's what's happening: People are getting the Spring Update, and their Xbox 360's are dying.
The common thread across most of the testimonies involves downloading the Xbox 360 Spring Update, having a few hours worth of joy, turning the Xbox 360 off for a break, and then turning it on again later, only to be greeted by flashing lights in quadrants one, three, and four. Others have noted that for some reason their units "revived" themselves only to succumb to the Red Ring again after playing a few HD movie trailers.
General opinions in the forum of Xbox 360 customer support for this situation range from "they were helpful" to "I think they're too busy...", so saying that Microsoft is "ignoring" this situation seems a bit too hasty. All we could add to this is that our Xbox 360 was generally ok, after the update. How about you folks, any problems?
Wow, from blue screens to red rings, we now wonder what dreaded error-thingie we'll fear five years from now. We'll update you when more info on the matter is made available. Stay tuned.

That sucks to hear. My 360 is doing fine with the new update, though I did have one person on my friends list who sent a mass message to all of their friends informing them that their console died post updating and that they were sending it in to MS for repair. 1 out of 101 isnt too bad I dont guess.
I don't quite understand why this should keep happening? I wonder what is causing this everytime?
Makes me scared to update my 360 each time, since I don't go online with my 360, I pretty much wait till a game comes along that needs a new update to play till I update now.
More than likely most of the ones that are affected have messed with their DVD firmware, as I and all the people I know have had no problems whatsoever, the way things are nowdays I wouldnt be surprised if half the posts are by owners of other consoles who for some weird reason like to post negative ***** about the 360 all the time.
When the PS3 is hacked and people start to mess with it you can expect exactly the same complaints coming from them to.

Considering 7 to 8 million users have probably installed the update and you grab a thread from an xbox.com forum with a small hand full of users I think you guys are obviously hunting for some negative 360 news.

Dont be so quick to judge. My xbox died when the fall update came and it was not flashed or opened. I had no problems with this update though but it's sad to see people screaming "PS3 FANBOY!!" everytime somebody has a problem with their console. Next time it may be your turn and it is really f*cking annoying to have that thrown in your face by people in your own community.

No problems here and my drive was hacked.
More than 10 people had problems with the Fall Update. The spring update has been a success based on all the forums I have been to. And considering the update has been out for 5 days and there is only a small thread on the xbox.com forum I can be 100% sure that the Spring update isn't bricking 360's. If it was don't you think we would of heard about this earlier than 5 days after it was released?
Oh no 8 360s bricked out of 8 million better submit a news article to alert people that we have a huge problem on our hands.
Well it's impossible to tell if somebody here even really has a 360. When the reports of the spring update bricking consoles came in there were lots of the PS3 fantards lurking around spreading BS. My 360 is out of warranty and I'm not really worried about my console getting bricked, but I just wait a few weeks anyway to update.

I've gone through my fourth 360 because I gave them the benefit of the doubt but this is really getting outta hand. My Xbox 360 is gone now with this update of death and the same happened to my 20 friends from school. A few of us got together to deal with this situation by calling m$$$ arsesholes. Guess what, they totally ignored our problem and said that nothing was wrong and if something had happened wouldn't be covered by the warranty. The last straw was when he told us to get a new one!!!
Well m$$$ $hit and your fakking console can go to hell as I am getting a PS3 RIGHT NOW!!! I had had with weeks of no play 'cause of the returns and fixing issues. Im surprised liars like yourself can accumulate 20 friends, but of course youre probably lying about them as well. The part that gives you away is the warranty issue. If you were indeed on your 4th 360 (which I dont believe) you would have had a full warranty since every time you send a 360 to MS for repair they give you a brand new 1 year warranty. So from that alone you would have been covered by anything that happens to your 360 (including bricking due to update) by warranty, and MS would have repaired or replaced your console free of charge.
Why PS3 fanboys such as yourself insist on impersonating 360 owners is beyond me. Im really starting to see it as an insecurity in the strength of your console of choice (ps3), because I dont see many (if any) 360 owners parading around as ps3 fans just to try to spread negative news. Same here hacked DVD firmware and no issues at all since the update.
i have a 360 elite, 360 premium, 360 core. all updated and all are running fine.
Since the Sping Update..Ive had no red lights as I havent since my Jan 06 360 came...but I sometimes have to switch it on and off up to 4 times as it gets stuck on the logo 360 screen..anyone else had that?

Also no problems here (with hacked drive) except for the occasional scratched dvd...
It doesnt scratch every game but ive had to burn UEFA CL about 5 times now because after couple of hours it starts grinding into the dvd

I'm very scared, I just ran the update for the first time last night (Never connected to live before), and I have yet to have a problem. But I also only played it for about an hour.... I really hope it doesn't "Brick" I opened the case and voided the warranty already, not to mention the different firmware.

Mine broke after a week... so I returned it to get my cash back... I'll wait a bit more before buying a "next-gen". And this time I'll try the ps3 instead.

I just read this after updating my Xbox 360 and I was scared to death about what would happen later. However the guys here stating that this is a scam made me feel confident.
Yet I only wish it was true, next time I turned it on I got a bricked 360. Tears ran down my cheeks as I was dying to play my game.
But I will listen to "madman" and get a PS3. I mean why suffer? Why keep a console that will at any moment for a 1000 reasons crash on you? That's not the way to have an expensive product and even less for playing when it needs to be reliable 100% like my friends' PS3. He never had a problem and all this time I kept saying I had a better console and the PS3 was crap.

Well... my Ps3 died in the 1.70 update... I have a xbox360 with hacked DVD firmware and no issues at all since the update.
i have a 360 and love the game but the console is poorly engineered. thats what happens when you releas a console before its even beta tested. the spring update worked for me but im on my fourth 360 (thankyou EBgames for extended warrarnty's) and while im talking about extended warranty's EB raised there price on 360 warranty's because they break so much.
Why havent you fixed 360 problems yet, is it impossible to determine whats causing the 360's to get th red rings of death and solve it?

my 360 has survived a couple hours and an all nighter after the update, and its firmware modded. no one on my friends list has bricked either after the update.

Well, I was on QJ just yesterday secretly laughing at the bricked console owners, purely out of spite...When lo and behold... My 360 bricked an hour ago. Karma, huh? Anyway, M$ said it was covered, and all I have to do is send it in... Maybe they will send me a quieter one... M$ is being helpful though, as much as I dislike M$ on principle...

I'm a ps3 fan. That doesn't mean I wouldn't feel bad for someone who loses their 360 or wii. Everyone paid good money for their consoles, and even though they have a console I might not like, they still have to go through the hassle of sending it in or replacing it, etc.
i have a 360 that bought like 2 weeks ago and it updated fine and works fine still. i thought i had a problem when i pluged it in and it turned its self on and i got 4 red lights but then i realized that the video cord wasnt pluged in lol.
lol i work at Game stop In NewYork and numbers wise 360's out sell the ps3. on a normal week we'll sell maybe 4-5 360's and 1-2 ps3's. the killer is that 2-3 360's get returned defective and the only reason we've had a ps3 returned is the guy needed to pay his rent and another guy couldn't sell his on e-bay. Microsoft is infamous for sucking with customer support and their products infamous for crashing without reason. so it is no surprise to me that their VG systems would follow suit.

within 30 days i think it is you can return unopened merchandise for full refund. some managers will be ***** heads about it but for the most part it goes without a hitch. the dude returning it for rent money had to trade it in he only got like 400 back for it (60 gig). but within return period and with a receipt you can return it for just about any reason. but personaly if your someone who's worried about makeing rent payments you shouldn't be buying a fracking next gen system in the first place...
I don't need "telling" which console to own, I made my decision, and you made yours, end of. Now what I am interested in is the genuine number of 360's that are failing after this update. Its inevitable that some will fail, xboxs fail everyday, regardless of updates. The figures seem pretty low though after I sift out all the made up stories I only see a minority genuinly facing a problem.
So, any genuine facts?
A particular board, firmware, month of production thats triggering these fails?

That's a big problem.
It seems to be across the board, from the first 360s to the most recent(includin g the elite). The problem in the first six months or so was bad soldering procedures for the BGA(cpu socket). Non lead based solders are generally not as reliable a contact as the older lead based ones.
The reason is why ones of all revisions are failing are due to insufficient heat dissapation issues, due to design. Their tolerances in design were too low for the natural variance you get in heat generation of chips(ie some run hotter than others). The only sure fix to this at the moment would be to wait till the 65nm core gets released IMO(current chips are 90nm).
I can honestly say that these reports are by and large not made up, the 360 has some of the worst failure rates in the electronics industry ever. If there wasn't a problem MS wouldn't have 1) extended their warranty from 3 months to a year 2) give extended warranties from any repair given.
We will never know the real extent of the problem as MS cunning decided to handle all repairs and the majority of returns themselves. So the failure rates will be very hard to find. Probably the best indiction would be a leak from DHL on couriers to MS's Redwood repair centre.
I've hard my 360 go in once so far, fingers crossed it does die again, well at least once the warranty runs out (in July)
Well my 360 bricked with the new update. So that's +1. I'm in Australia so I can't get my US model repaired either. Crap! Got an elite coming in the mail I might delay installing the update for the time being. Feel like a fool. Must get into the habit of letting a few days elapse before installing these updates.

I'm on my 4th 360... ring of light and DVD drive issues mostly... and MS has been great. I've yet to update, but we'll see if it gets bricked, if it does oh well, it's covered. I've got a PS3 too and that system seems rock solid but i don't have as much fun with it because of it's poor selection of titles at the moment and it will only get better. I don't get the fanboy hooplah... seems people want to justify their purchase of one system and mad that they can't afford both.

I have had no problems with my 360. I have had it for over a year.
Never had it scratch a disk, never had a problem from the updates.
It did freeze ONCE while playing King Kong, but that was it. It did shut itself down once from overheating because I had my entertainment cabinet closed and my AC wasn't working so it was like 85 degrees in my condo.
I read these comments about someone being on their fourth or fifth or tenth 360 and how they suck.....you are just soooo full of ***** people. Get a f*cking life. Will you be better off if your Wii or PS3 sells more? No, it doesn't affect you, so STFU!!!!
mine froze once, red-ringed 3 times and locked twice... But it works just like old times... Just suffered thru the *****and stayed persistent... My XBOX360 seems to be working fine now tho'...
But like many of you, I had NO issues with my XBOX360 till this latest/recent spring update.. Have had mine for over a year now..
You guys must have the worst luck...
I got my Xbox 360 in the North American Launch and have had ZERO problems...
And its not like I never use it, I have it on everyday. Most of the time I'm playing a 360 game, but some times its just chillin' in the dashboard...
ZERO problems, and its a year and a half old....
Now time to go buy myself a lotto ticket, because right now, I'm feeling pretty darn lucky...
The XBOX 360 has a great design, it just needs to be built by a different company than foxconn in China!

I had my 360 since launch day and never had a problem with it, not long after the spring update it all went belly up. I use my 360 mostly for media center extender stuff but one weeka after the spring update I finally got around to playing a game on it and sure enough after playing crackdown for 4 hours and leaving it sit for a weekend when i came back to it on the tuesday and powered it on all was not well. It locked up on me twice in the dashboard and then I got nothing but ROD. I have never opened or tampered with my console because it did everything I wanted it to. I now am going to attempt a repair on the console by replacing the xclamps which secure (albeit poorly) the heat syncs on to the board. I agree that anyone mucking with the firmware of the 360 needs to get a swift kick up the butt, but all that happens is you get banned from live, you do not get your console 3ROD. This is just a poor design by microsoft, if it's to do with the spring update or not, maybe, but it doesn't help the way that they've designed the clamps which are meant to hold the heat syncs on the board. I'll post back here when I get a chance.
